Should everyone shut up about private school VAT?

IABU- please, do tell us again how 7% of the children are SO MUCH MORE important than the rest of the children and how this will TERRIBLY affect EVERYONE and especially poooooor people.

IANBU- stfu about private school VAT and ban any more posts from MN.
It'll be less than the schools have put up your fees in the last 5 years and you've managed that haven't you?

It’s only on here, no one in real life gives a fuck

That isn't true. Colleague of mine has 2 kids in independent schools..she won't afford the VAT on top.

You're happy for more.kids to come into the state system which is already heaving?

SonicTheHodgeheg · 28/07/2024 22:16

I think that this will continue to rumble on in waves because you’ve got the reaction posts to when it’s starting, people comparing percentage increases between different schools as well as people speculating whether the alleged legal actions to stop it happening will be successful plus the inevitable analysis of how many people left versus how many people experts expected to leave.

BigCroc · 28/07/2024 22:20

All the people who say they don’t care really should. We need proper funding.

over a million children in the UK are living in poverty. That is an issue to care about not this load of crap. A very small percentage of people use private schools and a very small percentage of those can’t afford the fees now. Like I said in real life no one gives a fuck

PurpleBugz · 28/07/2024 22:41

It doesn't affect the poorest children though does it. Parents who used to be able to afford private school don't live in the most deprived areas. It's affecting the kids in nice areas at outstanding schools which are seen as second best to private.

I'm too poor for this to affect me in real life no outstanding schools anywhere near

So, let me get this right. We should give a shit that a tiny number of schoolchildren, a minuscule percentage of the 7% of total schoolchildren in the country who currently attend independent school ,may have to start attending state schools where the overwhelming majority of school children (93%) go??

urbanbuddha · 28/07/2024 22:43

@yeesh 4.3 million children are living in poverty in the UK.

The only VAT threads I see on here are shitstirrers like you OP. If you are so fed up with this topic, then why have you started another thread about it?

RainintheDesert · 28/07/2024 22:49

Most of us don't send our children to private schools so we don't really care.

What I do care about is getting funding to the state sector and reducing the cost of university to students and their families.

thismummydrinksgin · 28/07/2024 22:50

God yes

That’s not what I meant and I think you knew that.
The private school VAT is a red herring.
It is not going to raise the money that was initially claimed.
For those of us with kids in state schools, there is no more money being promised.
State schools deserve better, properly costed funding. This is not going to do that.
We need more funding.

The EU don’t allow education to be taxed, it’s considered that all education is for the greater benefit of society.

The UK is not a member of the EU.
Private schools are businesses and their aim is to make profits.

Only half of private schools are businesses. The other half aren’t allowed to make a profit.

This.

NewName24 · 28/07/2024 23:09

At least if MNHQ could create a topic for them, then the rest of us could hide the topic, like we can with other things we don't want filling up our feed.

Hangingupnow · 28/07/2024 23:13

Some of the threads have been eye opening!

I wish you would. The only people going on about it are people like you who keep posting about people going on about it. I’ve only seen one post in the last few weeks complaining about the imposition of VAT on school fees. Yours is the 4th post I’ve seen from someone complaining about people complaining about it being imposed.

Stop shit-stirring. If you don’t like the topic, stop wanging on about it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/07/2024 23:16

Just don’t read it.

I wish they bloody would.
This is the only place I see people moaning about it.
Virtually nobody else gives a shit.

Selfish people don’t care about taxes that they don’t have to pay themselves.

A lot of them don’t aim to make profits.

Some of them are quite entertaining.

Some are fascinating to see just how tone deaf and entitled these people are.

Thing is it really doesn’t matter. No one outside of MN is remotely bothered, it really isn’t on people’s radar at all.
MN is full of middle class mums who regularly post about it, but in the real world it’s just not an issue.

It’s probably the single most important government policy proposal in my social circle.
