Unreasonable colleague

Hi everyone,

I need to rant about a loser at work that’s really getting under my skin. I have a colleague (lets call him Dom) who constantly brings different lunches like tripe and hearts in the office. The sight really triggers me. Let's not talk about the smell from the microwave. I don't want to be ignorant and insensitive but I actually just don't really like Dom (hes overall a jerk) so the food is the straw that broke the camels back. (Hope that's the right saying!!!)

Anyway, I know I probably seem bitter about an awkward colleague, but your advice is welcome 🙏.

What do you mean by "triggered"?

What is it about his food choices that bothers you so much? The smell - complain to him or HR. What is company policy on hot food consumed at the desk? Do you have a canteen where he should be eating?

Or are you vegan/vegetarian and are offended by the meat eating?

Or is it that you really really don't like him so anything he does boils your piss?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 24/07/2024 13:08

Sounds like is a 'you' issue really, you can't dictate what someone has for lunch and you've admitted you don't like him.

Maybe go out at lunchtime and keep away from him at other times?

Liddylizmumof6 · 24/07/2024 13:20

I think it probably is a me issue. But honestly this food stinks. It smells so meaty and BO-ish? I can't explain the smell, but honestly imagine heating up a rubbish bin - that's what Dom and his food smell like. And no we have no food policies at work, and no one seems fussed by it (or doesn't want to say).

He does boil my piss. Great saying 👏 👌

It's really selfish to heat up stinky food in the microwave.

We had someone who used to microwave fish in the open plan office/kitchen. The smell lingered for hours 🤢

In the end the manager got rid of the microwave and she thought that was easier than trying to police people's food.

loropianalover · 24/07/2024 13:29

I’m confused by this whole thing. You’re triggered, but he’s a loser and jerk but you don’t want to be ignorant and insensitive? What’s insensitive about not wanting stinking food in the canteen? What are you triggered by? And what do you do mean he’s awkward, is he rude or just weird?

I think you’re very much overthinking it, has he done something personal to you or commented about your work in a way that’s upset you? It’s normal to be pissed off about manky food in the office, I just find the word choice strange and it suggests more is going on?

comedycentral · 24/07/2024 13:34

Why is he a loser? You don't hear that reference much outside of high school in the 90s!

Toooldtocareanymore · 24/07/2024 13:39

if no office policy about very smelly foods, and no one else is complaining, while i am very sympathetic to you- FFS tripe, yuck it doesn't even microwave well -not sure there is a lot you can do here other than plan to try get revenge, maybe get a very nice floral air freshener to spray in his general direction,

DayOutInRome · 24/07/2024 13:41

Go in early and replace the fuse in the microwave plug with one that doesn’t work. Might buy you a few days without the hot food smell and you can comment on how nice it is not to have food smells, suggest they don’t repair or replace the microwave.

Liddylizmumof6 · 24/07/2024 13:45

Hahaha I love the word loser, it sums him up perfectly! He never puts any effort in and tries to take the credit for it (sometimes for my work) so maybe thats why i am personally so annoyed by him. And as i already mentioned his food stinks, which annoys me even more. He also is one of those people that is so arrogant and think the sun shines out of his behind, and i dont quite know why? I think I'm so angry that my emotions are all over the place hence the weird language I've used 😅

Tripe and heart? Is Dom the office dog?!

FourNeedWeek · 24/07/2024 13:51

Side issue, but where do you even buy tripe these days?

Lol that made me laugh 😂 he may not be the office dog, but he thinks he's the office stud the way he prances round. Repulsive guy

Why are you so "triggered" by him and what he eats? Perhaps you "love to hate" him. I think you secretly fancy Dom.

OMG. I cannot think of anything worse than his spindly, cold tripe fingers anywhere near me😵 he make me want to vom!

Ps - i don't know where you buy tripe from. Definitely not my local Tesco!

cupcaske123 · 24/07/2024 13:57

Tripe and heart (I'm assuming he eats other organs) are very unusual lunch dishes. I would check your contract because there may be a clause about strong smells in the work place. If it's really bad, and I imagine it stinks, I would approach your line manager.

BMW6 · 24/07/2024 14:01

Buy a can of Oust and spray it around your area when he brings his food to his desk.

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 24/07/2024 14:01

That sounds like an offal situation 🙁

TinkerTiger · 24/07/2024 14:03

YABU for using 'triggered'. It's so overused and usually by attention-seekers.

Yes I'm a big attention seeker 😒...or I'm just someone that wants to rant away about an annoying colleague ?

"Boil my piss" is not a great saying.

Are you American?

honeyfox · 24/07/2024 20:00

I cooked heart for my dog once (long story) but Jesus Christ the smell of it. It's horrendous! Took days to get the smell out of the kitchen. YANBU OP.
