Am I though, being unreasonable?
Okay, so it is late and we are both a bit the worse for wear...and have just had a row about lettuce...DP says the reason he didn't put lettuce in the shopping trolley this week was because he noticed I didn't wash it...
Pleae flog and beat me now but I don't tend to wash pre-packed veg - is that really so bad?
I can honestly say my home is dreamily clean and tidy - I keep things clean, hoover, mow the lawn and weed the garden - is it really so bad i don't rinse lettuce??
I can imagine if I'd pulled it out of the ground, covered in slug's trails and whatever other winged or other folk were on it, I would rinse it off, but my time is precious and I'm not dead yet and have not washed a single pre-packed lettuce in my life!!
I don't mind if you all faint in horror - please just tell me! I honestly can't see why DP is being so weird about this - but maybe Im weird - the great unwashed....

But seriously, if he's worried, couldn't he wash it rather than just not buying it?

So, no YANBU. But he is. Or at least a bit wierd.

Is this your normal name or have you namechanged for this?

thegreatunwashed · 12/04/2008 03:34

I name changed - don't know why - I post a bit and don't want people to know this is such a drama in my life!!
So relieved to hear I'm not a complete freak head for not washing lettuce!!

I do wash lettuce btw.

thegreatunwashed · 12/04/2008 03:52

so what do you think about my behaviour - is it terrible?

Lots of people don't wash bagged salad. And I think the clean and tidy house gives you bonus points.

I don't understand why he never mentioned it before, if it worried him so much and why he doesn't wash it himself.

I'd be inclined to do something petty in return.

twentypence · 12/04/2008 04:19

Salmonella lives in lettuce apparently (sorry).

To not buy one rather than wash it himself is a bit daft.

ninedragons · 12/04/2008 04:34

Unless he hasn't got hands or can't reach the taps, he's being unreasonable.

I do wash bagged vegetables, though. Hate to break it to you but there was an outbreak of salmonella last year in the US that was traced back to bagged spinach.

UnderRated · 12/04/2008 04:37

Yes, that's the reason I wash it.

Furball · 12/04/2008 07:34

can rincing it under the tap - wash off salmonella though?

Furball · 12/04/2008 07:34

oops rinsing

Apparently 'washed' lettuce etc has no goodness left in it at all. It's cheaper and better for you to buy (and wash!) the lettuce yourself.

fruitl0ops2muchchoc · 12/04/2008 07:50

Wow! Can you really just rinse off Salmonella? I find that hard to believe . If you take in everything you read about what's in food, you'd never eat again!

ninedragons · 12/04/2008 09:09

Family finds frog in spinach bag

Bumperlicious · 12/04/2008 09:10

I generally wash salad but more to remove the chemicals that are sprayed on them than more organic dirt.

Now dd is on solids I am a bit more vigilant about washing fruit and veg, but never used to be.

When you say prepacked do you mean the ready chopped/washed stuff? They put chemicals in the bag to keep it fresh so I would be inclined to wash it. It's much better to just buy fresh stuff and wash it even though it takes time.

Do you need to invest in a salad spinner? It's rather sad, but DH always complained that his salad was soggy, so we got a spinner and it's great! [sad bint]

bohemianbint · 12/04/2008 09:12

He is being daft. Why couldn't he just say it bothered him?!

I always wash fruit and veg though, especially if not organic. Apparently there can be up to 20 different chemicals on an apple which freaks me out a bit.

Twinkie1 · 12/04/2008 09:14

You should wash bagged sala as sometimes it has been rinsed with water with chlorine in it apparently - I just buy and iceberg as am obsessed with flys (and they seem to have the least) AND IS CHEAPER TO CUT AND WASH MYSELF!

LynetteScavo · 12/04/2008 09:19

The packed lettuce states washed and ready to eat, surely... point that out to him. HOwever, it will probably have been washed in some wierdy chemical.

iloatheironing · 12/04/2008 09:50

I work in a large supermarket on customer service. Once had a man return his organic lettuce because it had greenfly on it (unwashed, not prepared type). I said it was either the pesticides or the greenfly....if he didn't want the first it was difficult to avoid the latter!!! He replied most indignantly that he was a vegetarian. I said I was suggesting he washed them off not eat them!!!Gave him a new lettuce in the end ..it was easier!

Nighbynight · 12/04/2008 10:03

I never buy the ready prepared salads, because I cannot bring myself to eat them without washing them (statistic once read in newspaper about most supermarket salads being infected with listeria floats into my head), but they don't look as though they should be washed.

ecoworrier · 12/04/2008 10:48

Bagged salads are actually one of the most common causes of salmonella and I think another type of bacteria. I don't buy them but if I did I would wash them.

ecoworrier · 12/04/2008 10:50

However, I must add he's a bit daft if that's his only reason for not buying it - can he not wash it?

southeastastra · 12/04/2008 10:51

i wash it, i found a small maggot type thing in my broccolli the other day.

thegreatunwashed · 12/04/2008 11:17

hmmm...food for thought...
Perhaps I'll sneak a lettuce back in the trolley next week and make a great show of washing it...Underrated I like your idea of doing something petty back - am such a child!!
Feel very educated in the world of lettuce now - don't like the idea of salmonela. I'm a veggie too and would hate to eat greenfly so maybe I'll turn over a new leaf (pun intended) and start washing it!
