To want sofas and rugs not covered in pet hair....

What sofas do you all have? I am so fed up of constantly having to vacuum the sofas and rugs, which are covered in cat hair.

I didn't even want the pets, and guess what? It's me who is left to clean up after them. We have 2 cats. I have a Shark Pet Vacumn and a carpet scraper. I use blankets on the sofas. One day, if I don't vacuum, the sofas will be covered.

I work full-time; I have 5 kids in the house DH woks full time.

I am fed up. AIBU to re-home them?

I feel your pain I have a lab and I swear I could knit another one from the shark contents on a daily basis but I love her so 🤷‍♀️ It’s not unreasonable to tell dc (depending on ages) and dh that they have to do their share of cats will be moving on.

Sosorryliver · 14/07/2024 16:30

I’m assuming you’re considering rehoming cats as opposed to children/ dh.

saveforthat · 14/07/2024 16:30

Just lower your standards. Don't Hoover every day. How old are the kids? Did they want the cats? Are they old enough to help? I don't have cats, I have a golden retriever. My standards are very low.

AquaFurball · 14/07/2024 16:33

5 kids and the two cats are the biggest mess SMH

You just don't like the cats

SmileLady · 14/07/2024 16:36

Thanks, maybe I should rehome the kids.....😂

The youngest 2 wanted the cats. My DD is 12 and my niece (who I share custody with her dad) wanted the kitten. I seriously regret it now.

I used to have two long haired cats … for 18 years before they passed. I’m afraid I never found a way to combat the hair.

paidbythejob · 14/07/2024 16:38

I have dogs, not cats, but they are long-haired dogs and a high-shed breed. Hair is much less of a problem with a leather sofa. For the rest of it, I'm afraid I'd just lowered my standards. It's not possible to keep the fur completely under control, and I'm not going to waste my life fighting an impossible battle. I try to keep it to a reasonable level, but I accept that this is part of owning the pets I chose. They make up for it by being loyal companions and entertainers.

A robo-vac helps, too, though you still have to hoover manually to get the stuff the robot misses or isn't strong enough to remove.

SmileLady · 14/07/2024 16:40

Thanks, I do have a robo-vac, but that is useless.

I am due some new sofas, we have had the same ones for the past 15 years and they have been well used as trampolines. Maybe I will look at leather sofas!

We don't have pets. My two multiyork sofas are 22 years old. They may creak a bit but they look like new.

We have enough human hair, don't need pet hair too. Yanbu.

AquaFurball · 14/07/2024 16:44

12 year old is more than capable of daily vacuuming cat hair off the sofa. Wilko honeycomb throws are great for cat hair though. Easy washed and dried.

purpleme12 · 14/07/2024 16:45

If you're that bothered about pet hair you don't get pets.

😞

Julyshouldbesunny · 14/07/2024 16:46

Ime brush your pets regularly and tumble dry blankets gets lots of extra hair off.

skyandocean · 14/07/2024 16:51

Get rid of the cats, kids will get over it. I wouldn't be able to deal. I already hoover constantly coz of the kids, I hate human hair, I would lose my mind over pet hair

TheSerenePinkOrca · 14/07/2024 16:52

Ugh same here! 2 dogs (DH's dogs. I don't do pets but he is a miserable git without them!) and I'm sitting here admiring the hair across the carpet since I vacuumed it 24 hours ago...

We also have the Shark Pet vacuum which is great but it's still me that cleans after them!

We have leather sofas as they're much easier to keep clean and fur doesn't stick to them!

I whack blankets in the tumble drier too. It’s amazing how much cat hair is in the filter.

OP, I find if I put a blanket on part of the sofa the cats will use that rather than sit on the bare sofa. I got a great cheap, waffle type throw that washes and dries easily by a brand called Dreamscene on Amazon.

Sheknowsaboutme · 14/07/2024 17:03

You would never let pets on the sofa.

id get rid. And i hate cats

Get rid of the cats, unless you want to be cleaning up after them for the next 15 years, and I'd imagine they get smellier and messier as they get older...

snowballsintheoven · 14/07/2024 19:08

No, I get it

I'd rehome my cats in a heartbeat but none of the local sanctuaries will take them

Therefore I'm stuck with them until they die

Hankunamatata · 14/07/2024 19:15

We used to have Persians. We combed them once a day and bathed regularly. Seemed to cut down on hair.

Poppysmom22 · 14/07/2024 19:18

ive always had long haired dogs leather is your only option in afraid

Poppysmom22 · 14/07/2024 19:19

i can tell you that velvet is not for you - I have a chair in my office it’s gorgeous but my god the fluff and hair that sticks to it

WTAFisthisnonsense · 14/07/2024 19:31

I am shocked by the casual 'get rid of the cats' attitude. Whilst I'm not a cat person (allergic) I have had dogs and they shed constantly but that is part of the deal when you get them. Just tossing an animal aside because of a minor inconvenience is horrible. I'm bloody glad I don't know some of you irl.

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/07/2024 19:43

Lower your excessively high standards! Who TF cares about some pet hair?! Why does it matter? In the scheme of things it’s just not important. Your pets are way more important, or they should be. A bit less hoovering will not cause the sky to fall in.

Yes, my view as well. Pets make so much work - usually for women who are not always the ones who wanted them in the first place.
