To hate this reply to 'have a safe flight'?!

So my partner often travels for work. I always wish him a safe flight and he never said anything apart from thanks. When I travel he does the same.

Well I wished him a safe flight today and he responded: 'It will be or won't be. Leaving soon anyway.'

What the hell? We are from different countries so sometimes have cultural 'what the hecks' but this is a strange reply right?!

If someone says something like "have a safe .....x" to me I often reply something along the lines of "fingers crossed".

Even with 2 pilots in the house I’d never dream of wishing them or anyone else a safe flight. It’s not what they, or anyone else needs to hear before they go out the door to make any journey by whatever means.

Have a safe flight is such a pointless thing to say though and it actually makes me anxious. Why would you even say it ?

Cabin crew here. This is something the crew will always say to eachother before a flight. Just like an actor would tell their fellow crew to 'break a leg'.

It's said because our role is primarily for safety related duties and we know that anything can go wrong at any time. This is why we spend weeks/months in training. The customer service part of our job is a nice little extra for the passengers.

It's a completely normal saying in my circle and when we say 'have a safe flight' we really mean it.

I have often wondered. So cabin crew worry about crashing ? Your post suggests that it is on their minds.

No we don't worry about it as the skies are filled with pilots that are highly skilled and will do everything in their power to ensure that it doesn't happen. We are also taught about some of the aircraft mechanics so have a better understanding of how things work and what to look out for.

Like pp have mentioned, you're statistically more likely to be in a car crash on the way to the airport than a plane crash.

That being said, unfortunately these things can and do happen. That's why we spend weeks and weeks in training, learning survival tactics, for those unlikely events.
We are trained in land and water crashes/evacuations, decompressions, firefighting, first aid, terrorism and avation security, e.g. passengers fighting, bombs. There's many more things that I won't bore you with but I feel confident in the hands of the pilots and I know that they always put safety first.

I wished my best friend a safe flight two weeks ago and she just replied 'thank you!'.

Never thought anything further.

That's because that was a normal interaction. I wish others a safe journey, they thank me and vice versa when I'm travelling .

I think what we are really saying is 'I hope you have a safe journey' and who can deny that wish for anyone ?

Maybe it's not annoying if it's a once a year holiday situation, but if the bf is frequently flying maybe he's starting to find it a bit trite and meaningless. Or maybe it was just a one off response from him which he didn't really think about before it came out, and which he'd be very surprised to find random people analysing on the Internet. Who knows?!

C,

I think wishing a safe flight is not something to say, not that the response is good either. As has been noted, flying is the safest form of transport.
