To hate this reply to 'have a safe flight'?!

So my partner often travels for work. I always wish him a safe flight and he never said anything apart from thanks. When I travel he does the same.

Well I wished him a safe flight today and he responded: 'It will be or won't be. Leaving soon anyway.'

What the hell? We are from different countries so sometimes have cultural 'what the hecks' but this is a strange reply right?!

Yes @JawJaw he can be brusque and is from a country like that. I am obviously just wishing him well.

Last night I was having dinner with my best friend and she said her partner had been complaining she's too brusque. I like no nonsense people but there's another side to it!

"Have a safe flight" would wind me up too. Unless he's the pilot or crew he has no control over the flight being safe or not, you may as well have said "hope you don't crash".

Rizzo8 · 07/07/2024 14:36

Really @OrwellianTimes ?

Would never cross my mind someone would feel that way to such a message

Yes, it’s like saying “hey if that thing you’re in goes wrong you’re all screwed, but I hope that doesn’t happen bye!”

Chemenger · 07/07/2024 14:56

I think it’s an odd thing to say. I don’t think I’ve ever said it or had it said to me.

OrwellianTimes · 07/07/2024 14:57

foreverhidden · 07/07/2024 14:44

Does it matter? It's such a run of the mill comment. 'Get home safe', 'safe flight', 'drive journey' is no different to 'hope this email finds you well' and when I was in a job and would speak at events people would say 'good luck'. Why would I need luck? It suggests I'm not prepared, I don't need luck but I accepted it's one of those comments that lacks meaning.

It matters if you’re a nervous flyer. Many more people are nervous flyers than drivers, because whilst car accidents are statistically more common, plane accidents are more catastrophic.

Rizzo8 · 07/07/2024 14:57

Oh dear.

I'm going to stop saying this. I didn't realise people felt this way and now worry I've been annoying people for years.

I don't like it when people say have a safe flight. The last thing I want to think of just before a flight is that some flights don't arrive safely.

EndlessSummer · 07/07/2024 14:59

Can you say, Have a good journey.

LakeTiticaca · 07/07/2024 14:59

Simple solution. Don't say have a nice flight and then he won't have to respond
Reminds me of the old joke
Patient: doctor it hurts when i do this
Doctor: well don't bloody do it then!!
🤣🤣🤣

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/07/2024 14:59

I guess it winds him up that you say this, otherwise he wouldn’t reply in that way!

Rizzo8 · 07/07/2024 15:02

Yeah I guess it does.@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Last time I'll be saying it...

This is my exact thought. I would find it irritating. How is he supposed to have a safe flight?

savoycabbage · 07/07/2024 15:10

I sometimes say to my older teenagers 'don't get murdered' when they go out at night. Same sort of idea I suppose.

BobbyBiscuits · 07/07/2024 15:12

Maybe it is a cultural thing. I would never wish someone a safe flight, nor would anyone I know.
It's almost like, of course it'll be safe. If it's not you're dead and we'd rather not put such images into our minds. It would exacerbate flight anxiety for some people.
Have a nice/good flight is better. The captain doesn't say 'wishing you all a safe flight' when he announces departure does he?

BiggerBoat1 · 07/07/2024 15:12

Have a safe flight is a bit of an odd thing to say. Maybe he just suddenly had enough of it and wished you'd stop (although he could have just said that).

Itisjustmyopinion · 07/07/2024 15:32

Have a safe flight is as bad as the stay safe nonsense during the pandemic. Unless I do something to myself I have no control around whether I am safe or not

Both are just odd expressions in my opinion

Rizzo8 · 07/07/2024 14:39

I'm really surprised by these replies. A revelation!

Have definitely had lots of people wish me a safe flight and thought nothing further.

Are they saying safe or good? I always say to my son good as I don’t want to give him any ideas it might not be safe (I’m a very anxious flyer).

RaisedEyebrows11 · 07/07/2024 15:34

I agree with not liking it. I’m a nervous flyer and don’t like to be reminded that some flights aren’t safe and do crash and I have no control over it as a passenger. I had to say this to a friend last year, so now get a ‘have a good flight’ instead when I’m going off for work which just feels sweet as intended.

God I’d freak if they did! 😯

lemonmeringueno3 · 07/07/2024 15:39

I think 'have a safe flight' is fine.

But then I also think his reply is fine and don't really understand why it shocked you

Isn't he just saying that the safety of the flight is out of his control, what will be will be?

Octavia64 · 07/07/2024 15:40

I mean I sometimes say to members of my family

"Don't get murdered"

So I don't think there's anything wrong with what you said but his reply is also fine?

MichaelFabricantsSyrup · 07/07/2024 15:41

I prefer 'Happy Flighting'.

Rizzo8 · 07/07/2024 15:42

Thats a new one for me @MichaelFabricantsSyrup 🙂

Yes, if you are a bit of a nervous flyer. It suggests that it may not be. You don't want those ideas in your head!

Bobbotgegrinch · 07/07/2024 15:51

Yeah, I've always dislikes "Have a safe trip / flight".

I'm not anxious or anything, it's just seems really doom-y on the part of the person saying it. Why is you first thought hoping that I won't die? Why is me dying even crossing your mind?

I'm going on holiday, why not say "Enjoy your trip!", or "Have a good time!"
