AIBU to be excited about the Olympics

I love the Olympics and paraolympics and I'm really excited, I love the opening ceremonies, seeing all the countries together and the hope and expertise.
I never watch sport normally but will happily watch some obscure event and root for a random competitor if no British.
Anyone else?

British culture is being extremely passionate and an expert in a sport you knew nothing about yesterday and will forget it exists tomorrow for the next four years.

itsgettingweird · 06/07/2024 19:09

Yes I love it.

Generally watch a small number of sports and watch Paralympic's mainly because my ds is involved in para sport and is aiming for LA28!

How exciting, we know people coming up in the para Olympics and I want to take my son for experience days (he gave up on wheelchair basketball unfortunately)

Does he like swimming? There's often start para swimming days throughout the year.

Or if he has a neuromuscular condition have a look at CP sport. They do lots of trail days for various sports.

Ginkypig · 06/07/2024 19:32

Yes!

I watched the diamond League
the European world championship
and the cycling in Glasgow this year for the first time this year ready for Paris

cant wait!

I would actually like to get him into shooting or archery as he loves this but don't know where to start, I'm signed with with the para Olympic agency to get notifications of when trial days are.

No. Because I’ve seen the politics and shit treatment of the athletes.

the power that ngb’s hold to force the athletes to toe the line, withholding funding, setting unreasonable targets, and manipulating so their favourites get selected.

put it this way- one sport half the team was selected before the Olympic trials.

GymBergerac · 06/07/2024 19:43

Me, I can't wait! I'm a massive athletics fan, and we've a friend whose son is very involved in the para's, we're so looking forward to seeing how he and his team mates get on after such an enormous amount of training.

No interest at all in football but very excited about the Olympics 😁

I am concerned that men will be competing in women’s categories which would make a mockery of the results. I think there should be open categories for anybody who does not want to compete as their biological sex.

Nearly all sports bodies have their trans gender policies written and most have already moved to female and male/open. Female being for female born sex athletes.

This whole males competing thing ended as quick as it started and I never saw it affect ds sport here in the UK despite in America it being a huge thing with one particular competitor.

Ds has experienced none of this in his sport.

Skybluepinky · 06/07/2024 20:01

Hate the opening/closing ceremony but love the sport, lots of people I know r competing so def more exciting.

ShillingForLabour · 06/07/2024 20:03

I love the Olympics. I just cry my eyes out for the whole time I watch. All those people, so dedicated and focused, trying their best, showing us what our human bodies are capable of. The drama. The glory. It’s the best.

Yes I think this makes a difference.

Ds has competed against and with many of the para team a few times this year and will do again in a few weeks - so watching them means more.

VerityBridge · 06/07/2024 20:05

A friend's daughter is competing this year! Will be so exciting to watch her.

LittleGreenDuck · 06/07/2024 20:05

I love watching really obscure sports that usually have no exposure and the athletics is always a good watch.

OP, I promise I'm not trying to be a twat, but it's Paralympics, not Para Olympics. Sorry!

itsgettingweird · 06/07/2024 19:59

Ds has experienced none of this in his sport.

Well that’s good. Doesn’t necessarily mean no one else has.

i do hope there are sports out there where things are fair and everyone gets an equal chance. Not come across it in my years of sport.

TheThingIsYeah · 06/07/2024 20:07

I prefer the Paralympics. The interviews with the competitors afterwards are more candid and genuine; hey come as people you meet in everyday life. The able-bodied competitors on the other hand are more media savvy, and they've spent so long in a bubble doing nothing but training they're like machines.

paywalled · 06/07/2024 20:07

I won’t be watching if the far right are in power in France.

Oh get over yourself.

Flourpowflower · 06/07/2024 20:08

I’m looking forward to it, especially as the events will be on normal time, not middle of night etc.

Perhaps you can afford to be blasé.

Thanks I thought para Olympics was wrong so happy to be corrected.
My French manager laughs at the way I say Olympics as despite being the same word they pronounce it very differently.

😂😂😂

You Tell 'Em, @paywalled

I'm sure all the athletes will be devastated. As will the far right.
