Neighbours spitting out the window

Bleurfghjj · 28/06/2024 13:40

And also loudly and repeatedly huaking and spitting in their downstairs bathroom with the window open.

We live in a terrace and if we have the kitchen or downstairs bathroom window open or if I’m sitting in my home office, it’s going on constantly throughout the day. Whyyyyyyyy 😫

It’s soooooooooo disgusting

Particularly the opening the back window and spitting into their own yard 🤢🤢🤢

Background

Our neighbours are not British and we assume this is a cultural difference. There is a family with (we think) 3 adult grown men and 2 women and a baby. They are pleasant if we see them in the street and their baby is lovely.

I feel like there is probably nothing we can do but open to suggestions or even just being told I’m not going mad and this is fucking gross 😆😆 It is driving me mad!!!!

It’s absolutely bloody disgusting and I don’t care if it’s cultural it’s still gross and they need to stop.

SkySmiler · 28/06/2024 13:42

Vile but agree it's a cultural difference.

Mydogisagentleman · 28/06/2024 13:42

Anonymous letter is probably the way I would approach it

Excited101 · 28/06/2024 13:46

I had a next door neighbour who used to do that- every morning and other times in the day sometimes too. Really foul.

in the end I moved, and he died… with his cough and his hacking up of phlegm- I’m not surprised 😟

I think they would know it was us as on the other side they back onto their neighbours with an adjoining wall.

We‘d have to be like – hi, it’s us from no. 25! 👋

Eeuugh, gross. I've moved house because of similar, different circumstances though.
In your case, an anonymous
note through the door, maybe with some NHS info (if available?) about coughing and spitting spreading illnesses. Not sure it will stop the hawking noise...that was the bit that got to me most.
Sympathies OP.

Littlebitpsycho · 28/06/2024 13:47

Ewwwww that's so gross, I can't stand spitting 🤢🤢

RefusingToPlayYourGames · 28/06/2024 13:48

Filthy gits. Why so many of them living in one house?

SuperSharpShooter · 28/06/2024 13:51

Even if they figure it out it's you.. if they are nice enough people.so far and you remain pleasant and friendly they may actually be grateful for the cultural/NHS advise/info.
It's worth a try!

I knowwww right. I don’t know how they even do it. It’s not just once it’s continual throughout the day and really elaborate and performative. They sound like they’re ill (2 are young guys, 1 is middle aged). I’m sympathetic to illness (don’t actually think they’re ill) but – out the window? 🤢

I assume they’re smokers.

Sorry you were driven to move by it :(

Yes that’s what gets to me :( Although also not a sound of the ‘pt’ sound of whatever they’ve coughed up leaving their mouth hitting the backyard

I hate all of it 😆😆😆

I guess you had similar but the neighbours were less oblivious to how rude/gross it is for others?

Really sorry you had to move because of it!!!!!

Which cultures do this?! Genuine question - that is gross. No excuse whatsoever, 'cultural', pffffft.

TheTartfulLodger · 28/06/2024 14:06

This can be a sign of tuberculosis.

Not necessary 'cultures' but people from countries where they don't have a vaccination program for conditions which cause you to hauk up a lot of spewtum like chronic TB. I've seen this myself with Indian neighbours at more than one property who patently obviously had TB and spent hours every morning hauwking up phlegm and coughing and spitting it out.

Towerofsong · 28/06/2024 14:11

Depending where your neighbours are from, many cultures are more direct than ours. And if that's the case with your neighbours I'd just knock on their door and say spitting out of the window just isn't on, and also "the walls are thin and you hear them coughing a lot and is everything ok, you can recommend a good cough medicine ..."

Way better to speak to someone's face but smile and be friendly but firm about the spitting, than the UK go to of an anonymous note!

watersoul · 28/06/2024 14:12

It is gross and as bad as littering in my opinion. I saw a lady doing this in the street the other day and it made me gag.

Sunshinethrumywindow · 28/06/2024 14:12

Surely though(if they are ill) they could do it in their sink or toilet why out the window, it's vile. I've never heard about any culture doing this I'm not being rude I just had no idea that was a thing 🤔

Bahamapyjama · 28/06/2024 14:15

I used to work in a hospital. We had a consultant in our department who, no word of a lie, used to spit into the sink in the corner of the room before the examination. The patient would be in the room on the bed waiting. And it wasn't a quiet little spit either. Absolutely appalling. Nothing was ever done, he was head of the department. I refused to work with him, he was a misogynistic twat too.

This was only about 15 years ago.

Hmm, let's think about that one....
Because the family don't have money for a bigger space presumably.

I feel your pain.

My NDN is an insomniac. He stands outside his front door smoking and coughing ALL NIGHT. It’s an awful, phlegmy cough and because it’s nighttime, it really echoes. It’s disgusting and it’s every 5 mins or so.

Afraid I lost it at 4am one morning and shouted that he was driving me mad, waking me every night and making sleep impossible. I said ‘I’m sorry - I’m so sorry - I know it’s not your fault (it is. Stop the fags) but it’s every night man! Please, please find somewhere else to stand. The idea of not being able to open my window all summer is making me extremely stressed and angry’.

He looked SO shocked. Hadn’t occurred to him at all.

He now (mostly) stands in his back garden

Welllll…. we also live next door to a small mosque, and men people coming in and out also spit on the floor a lot (also hate when people do this 😆). We get on well with them and they’re very friendly, and have been wondering whether to ask (nicely) if people could do this less outside our house.

I think my partner was curious and googled something about spitting and apparently there is some thing in islam about spitting being a bit of a superstition to get (mmm can’t quite remember the details) bad spirits or the devil or something out? So might just be considered acceptable and not frowned upon?

There’s a lot of people from other places (outside the UK) who live nearby and attend next door. So might just not realise.

I lived in a country years ago where nose picking in company was considered totally fine. So you never know 🤷🏻
