Strange face signal kids are making

Can anyone enlighten me as to the meaning of a signal my son and his mates are making it's a finger slide down the jawline and then the finger to their lips?

Posted in AIBU for some traffic.

I've come across this, it's a signal to mean "I'm not talking because I'm busy exercising my jaw muscles"...... Clenching them or something....

CinderellaMum · 23/06/2024 08:54

It means sigma here’s a link to the urban dictionary for definitions

Urban Dictionary: Sigma

what all 10 year olds think they are

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Sigma

Needmorelego · 23/06/2024 08:55

It's some tiktok nonsense I think. Doesn't really mean anything as far as I know.
Edit: I mean it doesn't actually mean anything you should worry about. It's just a daft craze.

Pascha · 23/06/2024 08:55

It's mewing. They place their tongue at the roof of their mouth which causes the chin the tighten underneath and a sharper look to the jaw, signified by running the finger down the jawline.

At least, that's what's supposed to happen. Most 11yr olds seem to just do the finger bit and a contemptuous look which just makes me laugh and do it back properly.

QueenOfDuisburg · 23/06/2024 08:56

My older two are doing this all the time at the moment too. One of them also keeps asking me what Sigma is. I'm totally clueless on all fronts 😅

Circumferences · 23/06/2024 08:57

Oh yeah "Mewing".
It basically means I can't talk because I'm doing something with my mouth/jaw - you can tell I don't properly understand it all 😂

BiscuityBoyle · 23/06/2024 08:59

Oh heavens. Did we do dumb shit like this at this age? I don’t remember.

Littletreefrog · 23/06/2024 08:59

Sigma its supposed to mean you are a popular and self reliant better than alpha male.

In reality it means you are a tween who watches too much Tik Tok.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 23/06/2024 09:02

Thanks for the responses my spidey senses were saying jt was something dodgy.

Time for mummy to do it back to the them, big of embarrassment may stop it!

Yes I think so!! Fads that youngsters latch into until another one comes along 😆 spread quicker now with social media

HollyKnight · 23/06/2024 09:04

It's a sign of disrespect when done to a teacher or parent. It basically means "I'm not going to talk to you because I don't care about what you have to say". When done to each other they're just saying "I'm saying nothing".

Little twats.

🤫🧏‍♂️

gamerchick · 23/06/2024 09:05

Well it is dodgy in a way. It's saying I or my friends are allowed to watch as much tiktok as I want. The site is a cesspit.

rc22 · 23/06/2024 09:09

My Year 2 class have recently been using "what the sigma?" as an expression of disbelief. I don't get it!

Definitely did! I remember it as putting your tongue behind your bottom lip, making a stipid noise and tickling your chin. Some lad in my class did it so often he got a rash on his chin. And then there was chinny reckon as well. What silly little buggers we were.

My 10 year old does this and he doesn't have tiktok or a phone, nonsense trendsamongst kids have always spread

gamerchick · 23/06/2024 09:41

Roll your eyes all you want. Doesn't make me wrong.

Pascha · 23/06/2024 09:46

Tiktok is 100% a cesspit and my preteen is not allowed anywhere near it but unfortunately the same can't be said for a good handful of his yr6 and yr5 classmates and so this stuff is rife in the playground.

However, as others have pointed out, we probably did similar at that age pre-internet. Slang has always spread and kids like their own language.

20 years from now our grandchildren will be baffling their parents with the same nonsense, just different words.

Better than "what the fuck?" I suppose!

We called this "belming". Ha ha WTF was that about?!

circular2478 · 23/06/2024 11:02

Yep all the kids around me are doing it. To do with sigma and Rizz, but I can't really explain it.

Needmorelego · 23/06/2024 11:48

@circular2478 "Rizz" is short for having charisma apparently.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 23/06/2024 15:40

My daughter does this and it's something to do with rizz which instagram told me was like romance. I don't think that's accurate tho.

It's all such bullshit but as long as she thinks she's cool 🤦🏾‍♀️

Lemonade2011 · 23/06/2024 15:44

It’s such a lot of nonsense I just ignore mine when they are coming up with this crap, 💩
the what the sigma is something to do with SpongeBob apparently but unless it’s offensive - they are doing it to adult/teacher/me then I keep out of it

TimoteiChaletpants · 23/06/2024 15:51

This is rife in school at the moment. As said to do with Alpha & Sigma males and is used to signify you are dominant male. Misogyny
