Protests in Mallorca - enough to put you off?

Friends have found a nice air BnB in Mallorca. But given everything that is going on there with protests I would feel very uncomfortable. Dh is saying that I need to let it go but what’s the point of spending money if I will be feeling like my presence is unwanted.

OP posts:
ShouldhavebeencalledAppollo · 18/06/2024 15:54

I wouldn’t. If people feel that strongly they are protesting, they don’t want people there. So I wouldn’t go. It’s their home, I think it’s fair enough.

Stay in uk. You wanted to 'leave ' Europe , so leave

Super intelligent reply 👏🏻

Namenamchange · 18/06/2024 15:58

No I wouldn’t bother, plenty of other places that are happy to have you. But I wouldn’t go to Cornwall for the same reasons.

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 15:58

If its not booked then just pick somewhere else. Shame as it's such a beautiful island.

LilianaVikavanovich · 18/06/2024 15:58

Just back from a week in Majorca
No protests where we were staying , a nice hotel just outside Palma
We had a wonderful time

We haven't "left Europe" 🙄fool

fruitbrewhaha · 18/06/2024 15:59

But they are not protesting against tourism in its entirety, they are arguing about controls
over controls over property ownership and inflated house prices.

LizzieBennett73 · 18/06/2024 15:59

I'm a bit on the fence, we have visited Mallorca several times and I've had great fun eating local dishes/learning Spanish and we've hired cars to explore the island. It's a beautiful island that has sadly been over commercialised and now has a reputation for cheap flights, cheap AI hotels and too many students/18 to 30 type holiday makers. But that's no different to any other holiday destination.

Cheap travel will be the ruin of the climate and ruin of the tourism trade.

Look, here's our position in Europe

Mindymomo · 18/06/2024 16:00

My adult DS was there in Palma for a cruise 2 weeks ago, despite there being over 5000 people on the cruise, there was no protests where they were. There are plenty of quiet areas in Majorca that won’t have any protests.

Leaving Europe never happened. Can never happen.

Not everyone wanted to leave the European Union.

and why would leaving the EU mean you shouldn’t/ can’t visit on holiday.

TheaBrandt · 18/06/2024 16:02

Too late for us have financially committed. I look quite Spanish so could probably get away with joining in the rioters Dh and dds would definitely get rioted at! Honestly everywhere I book a holiday something happens I booked Mallorca earlier in the year as it seemed so stress free !

ZiriForGood · 18/06/2024 16:03

Hotel outside of Palma - sure, go ahead and enjoy.

Air BnB - no way, you would be part of the problem no matter the protest.

poolemoney · 18/06/2024 16:04

Why do you need to feel 'wanted'? Just go and be respectful of the locals. You don't need a red carpet rolled out for you.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 18/06/2024 16:06

Spend money locally and don't get drunk and disorderly. And try and use their language for greetings etc

Not long back and it was fine although Im Irish so not sure that makes any odds. I would be more concerned about teh flooding and palma airport being closed.

Goldenbear · 18/06/2024 16:17

No, it isn’t my kind of holiday anyway but DH is more of a Sun, sea and sand tourist and we were actually speaking to friends about this at a party on Saturday about 10 of them said they wouldn’t visit the places with such protests.

Reposting without my PG insult as it seems to have upset MN…. Very sorry!

Theres a 48% chance that OP voted remain. We have not moved geographical position so I can only assume you mean leaving the EU and not ‘Europe’.

Passport control is a little ruder than usual and almost purposely slow at times. Other than that, everywhere is friendly including Palma. Those in hospitality quite vocal about not wanting tourists deterred. Go, you’ll be fine!

From what I gather from my friends I was discussing it with, it isn’t a need to feel wanted it is more that as a tourist you are part of the problem and having a negative impact on the environment the locals have to live in all of the time.

Doesn't sound like OP cares about that, she cares about her money "what’s the point of spending money if I will be feeling like my presence is unwanted.", she says.

The locals aren't protesting tourists anyway, they're protesting zero hour contracts, erosion of worker's rights, lack of housing etc.

It's quite arrogant to take it personally.

OP didn't mean it in the literal sense. She obviously meant she didn't want to go to a place where she felt actively unwanted. Nobody would want to spend a load of money with the hope of having a nice time and feel an air of hostility.

Having said that, I have very sympathy with the Mallorcans.
