Protests in Mallorca - enough to put you off?

Friends have found a nice air BnB in Mallorca. But given everything that is going on there with protests I would feel very uncomfortable. Dh is saying that I need to let it go but what’s the point of spending money if I will be feeling like my presence is unwanted.

Nearly half of us didn’t want to leave the EU actually.
The majority of holiday makers are respectful and well behaved.
However, the beautiful places we want to visit are people’s homes, I completely understand their desire to safe guard their homes and push for more sustainable tourism.
We probably won’t visit the Balearics again now, I want to respect the locals and can’t afford to save all year for a holiday where we’d feel uncomfortable and unwanted.

No it won't put me off. It's a small minority protesting and whilst I agree that people buying up property to use as holiday homes and rentals has priced some locals out of the market, we only stay in hotels, and I assume the people working in them will be glad if they continue to operate.

I'm currently in Mallorca at the moment and have been since last Monday, have had no issues what do ever and not seen a single protest. Not in one of the big tourist areas, I am in a lovely area called Cala Ratjada where everyone has still been very friendly and gracious.

MagentaRocks · 19/06/2024 08:56

I'm going at the beginning of July. I'm not worried. We are going to a quiet hotel. Some of the poor reviews are about it being quiet and not much close by which is a plus for us. We are quiet, respectful people who won't be getting drunk and out of control and just want a week of peace and relaxation reading by the pool.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/06/2024 09:03

@SpringHexagon ooh I was close to there last week as went to visit our friend who lives in Artà- lovely area. We got caught up at the floods in Palma airport coming back the next day!

Stay in uk. You wanted to 'leave ' Europe , so leave

You do know that just shy of 50% of Brits voted to remain, right?

Also, leaving the EU didn't get Britain physically removed from the continent of Europe, hun.

sunshinechaser · 19/06/2024 10:11

I haven't RTFT thread but I'm in Palma right now and haven't seen a thing. No issues whatsoever. Staff have all been lovely as usual. I did think about the protests before I came but I reckoned that even if there are protests they would only last an hour or two so wouldn't be a big inconvenience.

Buryyiirwhat · 19/06/2024 14:47

Wouldn’t bother me…

I get the impression they want fewer tourists, not no tourists at all.

We’re near that area tomorrow. Only a short weekend visit this time. Back in July but I prefer
May and June because of the crowds 😫

Kjpt140v · 19/06/2024 22:05

Protests have been peaceful. I wouldn't worry at all.

Really impressed with this area to be honest, it seems to cater more for German tourists, the good has been absolutely amazing. Shame you were caught up in the floods though.

AlleycatMarie · 19/06/2024 23:19

Just come back from Mallorca (I go several times a year). No protests and locals as welcoming as ever. The protests were about specific aspects of the tourist industry; don’t believe everything you read in the media.

Arta is my favourite place!

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2024 10:32

@AlleycatMarie yep- and not well known- have you been to Llucmajor- that's nice too and quite German centric - my favourite place is lovely Sant Elm - if anyone wants upmarket and gorgeous and not big with a lovely beach I recommend it- the universal hotel there (only 2 hotels) has had a huge uplift and is now simply gorgeous - we popped over last week

poolemoney · 18/06/2024 16:04

Why do you need to feel 'wanted'? Just go and be respectful of the locals. You don't need a red carpet rolled out for you.

I don’t think it’s to do with wanting to feel ‘wanted’, more not wanting to feel ’unwanted and unwelcome’…

It's physically impossible for us to 'leave' as the UK is part of continental Europe! I think you will also find that it was the European Union that was 'left' which is a political unit and not a geographical space!! 🙄

decionsdecisions62 · 27/06/2024 05:18

We were in Mallorca in may and didn't see anyone protesting. I think maybe you're over reacting to the media.

I did think that I preferred Greece in terms of how welcoming they are though and friendly. There is definitely a feeling they don't need to make an effort in Mallorca.
