To think this house is too remote to be feasible

Name change. Posting in AIBU for traffic. We are considering putting an offer on this house. It's exactly the style we want with more land than we wanted but I'm worried it's too far from Winchester where we started looking. To get the train station I'll need to drive, to get to the shops I'll need to drive! Does anyone do this ? Do you end up resenting the inconvenience? For example I couldn't just pop out for a big shop, I think I would need to drive to Winchester and pay for parking etc. Would need to pay for parking at train station when using it (at least twice a week). Do these things just get more and more annoying. Currently live somewhere where car isn't even really needed.

Also value for money?

Well you're not going to get those views with a Tesco round the corner so YABU!

Notsuchafattynow · 17/06/2024 17:07

You could get a supermarket delivery.

And if you can afford the house, parking costs would be inconsequential.

I'm not remotely rural, but everything is a car drive away. (Apart from the pub).

Notsuchafattynow · 17/06/2024 17:09

There's alot of grass to cut though, so you'll need more than one brown bin.

Factor that into your offer.

Mumsnet, please move this thread to Property - otherwise what on earth is the point of having separate forum areas?

I'd buy shares in Windolene if you do go for it.

Wrong thread 😫

I wish I had access to £2m, what a fantastic location. As long as the landowners don't sell the surrounding fields etc.

I don't care for the property really, there seems to be a lift wasted space indoors.

Gabbsters · 17/06/2024 17:11

Yes, we have to drive to buy a pint of milk (well, you can cycle but it's 40 mins round trip). I enjoy driving so it's no issue for me and I think we've also got better at being organised with the shopping so we don't keep forgetting pints of milk (like you we were in a very different area before with shops on the doorstep). You can use the postcode to check whether you can get a supermarket delivery there.

To me the benefits of being very rural and remote far outweigh the inconveniences and that's never been more true than now, when you can get the paper on your ipad and order anything you want to buy online. But only you know how you like to live.

It's a lovely house. No idea about value for money as I don't know the area. Plot is a bit bleak but it's a blank canvas. Some people don't like GF bedrooms. Do you have a purpose in mind for the annex?

BIossomtoes · 17/06/2024 17:11

It’s only three miles from Winchester. 🙄

SweetLathyrus · 17/06/2024 17:11

You're not going to need to pay to park at any of the Winchester markets (Sainsburys Badger Farm, Tesco Winnall, or Aldi/Waitrose Weeke).

Lastarse · 17/06/2024 17:11

Too late. I’ve just snapped it up for my portfolio OP, but thanks ❤️

It's almost as if OP posted it as she just wants some random Internet strangers to know she's pretend considering a 2.45 million house🤔

SweetLathyrus · 17/06/2024 17:13

Oh, and to get a property of that size in Winchester will cost you about double - and you'll still need to drive to the supermarket.

Bax765 · 17/06/2024 17:13

We live rurally and have to drive to the shop, train station etc. You get used to it pretty quickly and it is worth it to live somewhere with space, tranquility and no neighbours!

We do get our main food shop delivered.

CecilyP · 17/06/2024 17:13

You’re 3 miles from Winchester! There’s a lot of nondescript suburbs that are further from a town centre than that. It’s certainly not my idea of remote!

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 17/06/2024 17:14

Compton! That's no distance from Winchester. I've walked it.

FOJN · 17/06/2024 17:14

Nearest station is a mile away. Sainsbury's is on the outskirts of Winchester, side nearest the house. I'd be more bothered by the proximity to the M3. Energy rating is poor which is pretty typical with barn conversions.

It's over 5000sq/ft, you'll need a full time cleaner and plenty of money to heat it.

Go for a viewing if you like it and see what you think.

Gulbekian · 17/06/2024 17:15

Do you have children? My main concern would be that they would be a bit cut off socially, especially before they got old enough to get themselves around independently.

BMW6 · 17/06/2024 17:15

According to the floor plan you have to go outside to gain access to the 2nd bedroom in the annexe, so get some brollies in

Tel12 · 17/06/2024 17:16

We live rurally, but have Waitrose, Amazon and River ford. It's the price you pay.

You could buy a small helicopter and do your shopping in Paris instead?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 17/06/2024 17:17

That’s not remote, OP. It’s three miles from a city ( and a lot less from a motorway, can you hear it?). I thought you were going to show us somewhere north of Inverness.

if you think that’s ‘remote’ , though, it’s probably not for you.

SweetLathyrus · 17/06/2024 17:18

Just checked the map - it's really not very remote at all. Awkward for the main winchester train station, but certainly easy on a bike, and not far from Shawford.

HousedInMySoul · 17/06/2024 17:18

Straight outta Compton! It looks very different to how it was described in the famous NWA track 🤔
