To think this house is too remote to be feasible

Name change. Posting in AIBU for traffic. We are considering putting an offer on this house. It's exactly the style we want with more land than we wanted but I'm worried it's too far from Winchester where we started looking. To get the train station I'll need to drive, to get to the shops I'll need to drive! Does anyone do this ? Do you end up resenting the inconvenience? For example I couldn't just pop out for a big shop, I think I would need to drive to Winchester and pay for parking etc. Would need to pay for parking at train station when using it (at least twice a week). Do these things just get more and more annoying. Currently live somewhere where car isn't even really needed.

Also value for money?

I find it hard to believe that the occasional cost of parking is a concern for someone who can afford a house of around £2.5m. Or that you can’t afford supermarket delivery costs at around £2-£5 per shop. If it’s really of genuine concern and not actually some sort of weird stealth boast, then perhaps you should look at a lower budget and save money towards the slightly raised car ownership costs of living rurally. Good grief.

Quite agree - this is either a far from humble brag or a fantasy. Why would someone be looking to make an offer on a property they clearly haven’t even viewed or done any real research on the area?
This location is hardly rural and if OP had visited they would know that the nearest supermarket is a 5 minute drive (Sainsbury’s) with another 4 (Waitrose, Lidl, Tesco and ASDA) within a 10 minute drive. All have free parking.
Has OP even visited the city? The city centre supermarkets are small convenience store types, unless you exclusively shop at Iceland or M&S you don’t need to drive into town for a supermarket. Even then it’s only 20 minutes to the massive M&S at Hedge End.

Personally don’t understand the appeal of such a big property (each to their own) and with that budget could get a smaller hit more characterful property closer to town (which is hardly urban by any stretch).

This house is beautiful, had a relative who used to live near here. Easily walkable into the city.

Have visited.

The whole point is that I'm weighing up everywhere being a drive of some sort.

Yes I love Winchester, hence starting out wanting to buy there.

Well that part is all personal taste.

Most people would think driving 5 minutes to a supermarket or GP (presuming Compton is served by the Friarsgate practice who have a clinic on the same site as Sainsburys) is very close and from your original post it didn’t read as if you had much clue as to where anything is.
The BlueStar no 1 bus goes from Compton approx every 15 -25 minutes and takes about 20 minutes to the city centre. The P&R is less than 5 minutes from Compton and buses from there go very regularly to the train station/town centre. I guess it depends how much you consider using the car as too much, you can walk to the primary school but would need transport to secondary.

You’re 3 miles from Winchester! There’s a lot of nondescript suburbs that are further from a town centre than that. It’s certainly not my idea of remote!

Agree, we live three miles out of town, and once lived in the suburbs. And I felt more stranded when I was in the latter. For me if it is safe to cycle, not so much a problem. But there are many places around here that are next to impossible to get to by bike without risking your life. If on the other hand I had a car then there would be no issue whatsoever. I mean who needs a car in the town/city anyway?

Apropos of nothing. WHY is the main bedroom of the annexe not connected to the rest of it? Imagine needing to get dressed and put on outdoor clothing if it's raining or snowing and you just want a cup of tea! Who designs these things?

fao · 19/06/2024 23:59

That's so pretty! What do people who buy these houses do for a living? Is it generational wealth?

To answer the question , It does sound inconvenient to me but I am not speaking from any kind of experience.

BMW6 · 20/06/2024 07:20

fao

There is a huge variety of very well paid careers!
Just have a little think about it!

Not at all restricted to generational wealth.

I’m looking for a house at the moment, all the nice ones seem to be 3 miles up a main road (hill) another road behind that one as well. I’ve decided against them because I wouldn’t like to have to take a car every single time I leave the house. I don’t want to feel isolated either I have a 9 year d still at home though so that’s comes into it, I don’t want him not having many friends round and stuff because it’s such a treck. Anyway we’ve found a nice newish build estate, it’s nice enough but near things and not isolated.

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/06/2024 13:53

Surrounded by arable - at various times of year you'll have heavy stuff doing agri-things... planting, ploughing, spraying, fertilising, harvesting. Some of this may well mean big kit driving up and down with bright lights on through the night.

Property has NO garage/workshop at all... it needs a ride on mower to deal with the land at the very least and probably more kit than that... stored in the open, it will disappear in the night/when you're out, particularly given your proximity to the grain store where theives will be looking for stealable goodies left out. (Stored in a shed it will just take them a little longer to nick stuff).
