To ask which Greek island?

I am being unreasonable to post on here but I know it gets a lot of traffic so I do apologise!

Looking to go to Greece next May with our 2 year old. Which island would you recommend? Would ideally like something that has a Greek feel rather than purely karaoke bars etc but don’t mind a bit of a mixture! So many places to choose from it’s hard to pick.

Thank you!

Kefalonia is gorgeous. Nearby Ithaca is lovely too but you need to fly to Kefalonia then take a ferry.

BananaSpanner · 11/06/2024 20:33

Crete.

bananafishbones1 · 11/06/2024 20:40

I've not been but I read writer Victoria Hislop say Naxos is her favourite. It's not the easiest to get to though, so with a two year I'd prob choose something with direct flights.

verylongday · 11/06/2024 20:42

Kefalonia is my favourite. Its so pretty and not massively commercial

PurpleFlower1983 · 11/06/2024 20:45

Kefalonia is gorgeous, as is Paxos, which is easily reachable from Corfu.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/06/2024 21:05

But if you asked in the appropriate topic then all the good advice you get on this thread will be easily searchable for people looking for Greek island advice in the future. So YABU.

Given it's May with a 3 yr old I'd look only at places with direct flights, short transfers and reasonable (ie not 35+ degrees) weather.

Early May and late May can be very different but it's still a risk and you won't enjoy yourself with an overheated toddler, running after them with a hat and sunblock the whole time.

Mainland is often more Greek (and cheaper) than the islands. I love Parga.

Whichisland · 11/06/2024 21:31

Thank you. Paxos and Naxos look lovely but I’m leaning towards Kefalonia as it’s easy to get to and has good flight times from my local airport. @Lancrelady80 @PurpleFlower1983 @verylongday what areas would you recommend?

@OnlyFrench ahh ok, sounds stupid but I haven’t even looked at the mainland yet. Will check it out now. Thanks!

We stayed in a lovely aparthotel by the beach in Scala.

RhiWrites · 11/06/2024 21:35

I like Rhodes. There’s a lovely child friendly resort in the south called The Matina at Pefkos.

EffinMagicFairy · 11/06/2024 21:35

Loved Kefalonia, we stayed Enalion Suites, bed & breakfast, lovely pool, no fight for sun beds, steps down to beach, 10 minute taxi (cheap) to Argostoli, lovely restaurants here rather than the local town Enalion is near, which is walkable but we much preferred going to Argostoli.

Corfu! Kassiopi is a lovely place. Has just a couple of bars that do karaoke, quiz etc.

There is Sidari too which has much more going on in terms of tribute acts and karaoke etc few places even serve carvery on a sunday 🙈 not my thing but about 15 minutes away from there is the Canal D'amour area which has some lovely little beaches and walks to do. More family run accommodation down that end.

Hobbesmanc · 11/06/2024 22:05

Look up the Parga Beach resort. It's mainland with direct flights to Preveza from several UK airports. 45 mins transfer. Parga is lovely with an island feel and lots to do. The hotel is right on a lovely beach with good sun loungers etc. it's low rise designed like a little village with stunning gardens and several family pools. You'll love it

Kago2790 · 11/06/2024 22:10

Asked a Greek colleague this once and his answer was Crete because it is quite large so has everything from quiet beaches to city and everything in between. Also Cretian cooking is considered particularly good.

Karpathos.
Bit of a pain to get to, but 100% worth it.

Dweetfidilove · 11/06/2024 23:01

Another vote for Kefalonia. There were many families with children, pretty, peaceful and Argostoli for food and attractions.

Thursdaygirl · 11/06/2024 23:06

Santorini is lovely

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/06/2024 23:19

Kefalonia here too. Skala is a lovely resort.

deltablue · 12/06/2024 04:04

Naxos. Also (not an island but) Pelopennese which is mainland but so overlooked and full of wonderful culture and history- Tolos, Epidavros, Nafplio and Corinth.

Happyinarcon · 12/06/2024 05:56

I would go to Crete and visit the Takis dog shelter and play with all the dogs and cats. I have only seen it on YouTube but it looks like a slice of heaven

Amx · 12/06/2024 08:22

Parga can be a bit cooler in May as it's on the mainland. I would avoid Corfu then too as May is often still rainy.

Rhodes and Crete are warmer then.
