Period delaying pills

I need some for my summer holiday but I've never taken them before so I'm a bit uncertain about what to do.

It says to start taking them 3 days before period is due but my cycle can sometimes be a bit irregular so how would I know when to start?

Also the 30 x pill packet at 3 a day would only take me to the second last day of my holiday. Would it be likely to start the day after I stop taking them? Really confused on the timings more than anything.

I took them for an event recently. They made me really uncomfortable so I took one the morning of the event and then stopped. I started bleeding the next day.

Garlicker · 09/06/2024 21:43

Just looked these up. It says you can take them for 3 or 4 months continuously.

Start 25 days after the beginning of your last period. [edited for bad arithmetic]

Though I don't know why you don't use a contraceptive pill - only one a day?

ExtraOnions · 09/06/2024 21:44

My daughter used to take these when she went on primary school trips (started her periods at 9). Worked really well

dementedpixie · 09/06/2024 21:45

Just start taking them a few days before you think it might be due. Period should start 2-3 days after stopping them.

What I mean is does it strictly have to be 3 days before I'm meant to start or would it still work if it was 1 or 2 days before it was due. My cycle can sometimes be out by a few days so it's hard to know.

And say if it came really early and my period starts is it too late by that point to begin taking them?

I have been experiencing lots of breakthrough bleeding so it’s unpredictable. I can take these on morning I experience this and it’s stopped by lunch time. I recently took them for a holiday. No side effects at all. I would speak to doctor as I was given several 30 x pill packet.

Wontubemysweetheart · 09/06/2024 21:49

Op my periods are abit out of schedule but so far by sticking to the instructions ive been fine and they've worked. Calculate when you would expect your period as best you can (I usually write all my dates down and then try to track a pattern) and then take the tablets accordingly. I usually stop taking them two days before my holiday is due to end and then usually on the 3rd day my period comes. But it could be different for you. Read the leaflet well and stick to the instructions only. Obviously if your periods are really out of sync I would speak to the chemist and ask them how much more early on you can take them.

ThinWomansBrain · 09/06/2024 21:50

Are you talking about Tranexamic Acid?
I was prescribed them long term - didn't stop my periods, allegedly reduced the flow, but not sure if they did. They did give me DVT.
Probably fine short term - but don't bank on them working.

GardenGnomeDefender · 09/06/2024 21:51

A drop in oestrogen and progesterone brings on a period so if you leave it til one or two days before your period then your hormones might have dropped enough that the pill won't make enough difference and you'll still bleed anyway.

dementedpixie · 09/06/2024 21:51

@ThinWomansBrain I assume OP is talking about norethisterone or similar as it can delay your periods for as long as you take the tablets

Op there is a chance if you don't take them at the right time and your period has already started then the tablets will be too late. I think that's what your question is. If you are concerned ask the chemist how much earlier on you can start but bear in mind that then means you may not have enoguh medication to get you through your hols if you start taking them very early

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 09/06/2024 21:52

I've taken these twice before a beach holiday - just be aware both times I've had horribly painful periods afterwards. I'm sure some people have no side effects but I definitely did.

Ilovebees · 09/06/2024 21:52

@carrottop23 you can take them more than 3 days before , nothing is going to happen . I have taken them 10 days before my period started for ivf to delay my period . It’s better to take them long before you think you start your period instead of too close to period starting . If you take them one day before , you could still have light bleeding but it would stop the next day , but not guaranteed it would stop , so do take them a week before you go , if you want to be on safe side , and you can take them for a long time if needed too , period will start about 2-3 days after stopping them . The tablets I took are called norethisterone .

dementedpixie · 09/06/2024 21:53

When are you going on holiday as if you have a couple of months you could delay a period while you are at home and then your cycle would be shifted for the next period.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 09/06/2024 21:53

Just start taking them the day before or the first day of your holiday. I presume you mean noretherstrone? They start working quickly, my periods come as soon as I stop

HaveSomeIntrospect · 09/06/2024 21:54

@dementedpixie it doesn’t work like that for me.

dementedpixie · 09/06/2024 21:56

When I took them my cycle then carried on from the delayed period rather than when the original period should have been

HaveSomeIntrospect · 09/06/2024 21:57

Menstruation is a complex mix of different hormones, taking norethestrone shouldn’t disrupt your cycle and although you might bleed when you stop taking it, your cycle will should continue as normal. It won’t delay your next period

Deliaskis · 09/06/2024 21:57

I have taken these over about five days when I was away doing a long trail walk, and would just say that they did leave me in a sort of suspended ongoing hormonal/PMT state for the whole time I took them. So it sort of defeated the purpose for me because whilst it was practically easier not having to worry about loos whilst out walking, it did still spoil my trip really.

Fuckitydoodah · 09/06/2024 21:58

I have no advice as I've never taken them, but seriously considering getting some for a holiday this year. Had my period on our holiday last year and it was crap as so heavy, looking like I'll be due the beginning of our holiday this year.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with them.

TheLette · 09/06/2024 21:59

I used to be able to use this pill to delay my period in advance. I can't take it at all post-children, 1 pill and I go absolutely crazy. I use period swimwear instead which is honestly amazing.

It did for mine. My cycle reset to follow the delayed one

Sablecat · 09/06/2024 22:01

I did this for a holiday once. Never again. Something went horribly wrong and I puffed up like a beach ball. I honestly looked about 5 months pregnant. I had to stop taking them and had just about deflated by the end of the holiday.

I’ve taken it numerous times and it’s always shifted my cycle back by however long I took it for.

OP my cycle is not dead regular, it can be anything from 28 to 34 days, so I start taking it 3 days before the earliest possible date it would usually come i.e. day 25 after my last period. Running out one day before the end of your holiday will be fine, it usually takes a couple of days for your period to come after stopping.
