30-20-30 mph ... whyyyyy?? 😨

So many councils are doing this now : you're driving on a 30 road, then it's 20, then there's speed bumps, then 30, then stupid fucking wooden posts stuck in the ground, then 20, then brown tarmac (what does that even mean?), then 30 ... all in the space of two minutes. It's a fucking road. You drive on it. Why so many instructions? I think it's unnecessary and annoying. AIBU?

I’m lucky if I drive somewhere I can get up to the dizzy heights of 30mph, everything around me has been changed to a 20mph now.

HamBagelNoCheese · 09/06/2024 05:48

The only reason there is that kind speed variation here is around schools. Terrible idea.

🤨

Lemons1571 · 09/06/2024 05:50

There Is a new build housing estate in my town where the speed limit through is 10 mph. Not just by the school, it’s 10mph through the entire estate. The reason given is children playing, but I’ve never seen any unaccompanied children roaming the streets in this location. I regularly get overtaken by bicycles.

Yeah they should just make it 20 everywhere tbh

StopStartStop · 09/06/2024 05:55

Out of Otley towards Harrogate there's a long stretch of 20mph due to resurfacing and 'skid risk'. I think someone's having a laugh.

Generally, I like 30 on main roads, 20 on side streets.
Would people keep to the speed limits, please? If I'm driving at 30 in a 30 zone, follow rather than overtake, even if it shrivels your pathetic little balls to be behind a grandma on the road for a few minutes.

Justleaveitblankthen · 09/06/2024 06:02

Puts me off going into north Wales as much for a start (it's close to me) but it's definitely getting the same everywhere.

hattie43 · 09/06/2024 06:05

This is horrendous around my way , 40 30 50 back to 30 every 300 mtrs or so . I scream I just want to drive my car . I spend more time looking at these speed signs than I do on the road .

That's ridiculous

Snooglequack · 09/06/2024 06:32

They've just made a road near our house 20. It doesn't need to be 20, it's not an area around a school, I've never seen anyone attempt to cross the road there and very few pedestrians.

The only reason it's been made 20 is that it's a stretch of very expensive houses who have lobbied for it. I assume either a councillor lives there or one of their mates do.

OneTC · 09/06/2024 06:43

CaptainHaddocksPychotherapist · 09/06/2024 06:28

Well, anywhere that isn't dual carriageway or bigger.

ChristmasFluff · 09/06/2024 06:58

I live in Wales, and lots of roads here are 20mph. I'm glad - when it's crowded in summer, 30 is way too fast in crowded towns and villages. Apparently it's already saved lives.

I also regularly drive into England and back. The time taken has not increased due to the 20mph limit, so it makes me laugh that people from England don't want to come. I guess they're happy to be stuck behind tractors, caravans and hesitant 40mph drivers (this is what actually makes a HUGE difference in travel times), but woe betide a life-saving initiative!

It takes literally zero energy to switch speeds, but I suspect the problem is that many drivers are on autopilot for a lot of the tme, and these signs mean they can't zone out so it is felt as a mental load. But conscious drivers are safer drivers.

thefireplace · 09/06/2024 07:05

Having very nearly been run over by a twat speeding along a single track road yesterday, i ve no patience with the idiots moaning about 20mph limits.
They are the same entitled wankers who moan about 30 limits and want them to be 40 etc etc.

I ve driven in 20mph zones here in cornwall, its no big deal, 2nd gear and they are never very long.

The reason kids don't play on the streets and pavements is down to car drivers killing them - approx 300 killed last year alone, and 1000s of others very seriously injured.

Chocolateorange22 · 09/06/2024 07:09

I don't mind too much about 20mph. I do mind about the ones that go from 60-20, how dangerous. In my IL's North Wales village people are incredulous that people are still speeding through... Drop it from slower over a longer distance surely 🙄

grannycake · 09/06/2024 07:09

I'm in Wales and I drive, cycle and walk regularly. The 20 mph in built up areas have made a massive difference in out village - I can actually cross the road safely now, traffic noise is reduced and more people are choosing to cycle.

If you can't follow simple road signs re speed you shouldn't be driving

Same. I've been fined for speeding twice for doing the wrong speed accidentally

VolvoFan · 09/06/2024 09:07

To get people out of their cars, ultimately.

mumda · 09/06/2024 09:36

Remind me what the optimal speed for causing car pollution is.

determinedtomakethiswork · 09/06/2024 09:38

I know two people who have been fined now for going at 30 in a new 20 zone. The only reason I can think of for them changing this is so that they can fine everybody and bring some money in.

SilentSilhouette · 09/06/2024 09:45

We have the 20mph limit in our town and its awful.

Takes ages to cross the road and the bell ends that speed through still do so, and the 20mph has just pissed off all the sensible drivers instead.

They spent £millions on this scheme which could have paid for police to actually catch the bell ends on their phones whilst driving etc...

Balloonhearts · 09/06/2024 09:46

The reason given is children playing

Jesus fucking Christ. Why are children playing on the roads? They seriously told you that? 😂

Isn't 'Don't let them play in the traffic' in the first chapter of Parenting for Complete Morons.

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 09/06/2024 09:46

Because 5 people are killed daily on the UKs roads and the authorities are trying to prevent them.

BusyCM · 09/06/2024 09:56

OneTC · 09/06/2024 06:43

Well, anywhere that isn't dual carriageway or bigger.

I use a long A road down the the road coast. It's long, pretty straight and largely goes through unbuilt areas. 20 MPH is ridiculous!

Nervous and slow drivers are often the most dangerous.

ManyATrueWord · 09/06/2024 09:59

There are good reasons for 20mph zones - reduce noise, make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians, reduce damage if there is an accident. However I resent being told it's all about children's safety when in so many cases there is simply no record of any child being hurt by a car. I triple resent that no one will do anything other than put up a speed limit. No ticketing of bad parking, no speaking to people, no police officer presence, no paying for alternative services like walking buses. It's like they are addressing the fear of crime instead of actual crime.

fieldsofbutterflies · 09/06/2024 10:01

It's to try and get people to slow down.

MagnusCanis · 09/06/2024 10:03

The "brown tarmac" is likely anti-skid. It probably used to be red.
