So many councils are doing this now : you're driving on a 30 road, then it's 20, then there's speed bumps, then 30, then stupid fucking wooden posts stuck in the ground, then 20, then brown tarmac (what does that even mean?), then 30 ... all in the space of two minutes. It's a fucking road. You drive on it. Why so many instructions? I think it's unnecessary and annoying. AIBU?

If it’s not the whole road, just a section, there’s a reason to do just that bit - possibly previous accident(s), noise issues, a school/park, possibly to slow you down before hitting the next stretch to stop that 30 being driven at 40.

But it’s usually previous accidents or schools.

I agree. It doesn't make for pleasant driving, and it doesn't actually make sense, for a safety pov re pedestrians or any other reason.

Yeah they should just make it 20 everywhere tbh

I agree.

That's what has happened in Wales (20 in most areas that were previously 30) and there has been so much moaning about it. Personally, I don't find it a problem, and as I am a peripatetic teacher, I frequently have to drive from school to school through towns.

Puts me off going into north Wales as much for a start (it's close to me) but it's definitely getting the same everywhere.

If you stick to the A roads then you will be fine and will probably only encounter 20 when you are close to your destination.

If you try and avoid the traffic and come off through the B roads / towns you will hit the 20 zones. It really isn't a big deal.

LIZS · 09/06/2024 10:50

Usually it is for safety ie. School or park access and the brown surface is anti-skid where a number of accidents have occurred.

JustPleachy · 09/06/2024 10:57

If you hit someone at 20 they will probably live.

If you hit someone at 30 they will probably die.

There are other benefits too.

There are good reasons for 20mph zones - reduce noise, make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians, reduce damage if there is an accident. However I resent being told it's all about children's safety when in so many cases there is simply no record of any child being hurt by a car. I triple resent that no one will do anything other than put up a speed limit. No ticketing of bad parking, no speaking to people, no police officer presence, no paying for alternative services like walking buses. It's like they are addressing the fear of crime instead of actual crime.

This is a problem countrywide particularly around schools. Parking offences in a lot of towns has been passed to the council and when the police and council are outside a school everyone miraculously can park considerately, no presence and everyone drives and parks like a prat. The authorities just don’t have the resources to enforce every single road every single day. And when they do police it and publicise it all the comments are saying either that it’s a money making exercise or that they should catch real criminals. Damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
