Maxi dress lengths have changed?!

This has been bothering me for awhile now and I guess it must be because I am just hideously unfashionable

But didn't maxi dresses used to be longer??

They all swing around on top of my ankles ( I'm only 5'5" and that's where they are on models ) and my calves are too chunky for that to be a good look

I want floor length maxis! Any tips of where to get?

I can’t help where to get but you are not wrong!! I hate that they’re so short now!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/06/2024 08:19

They have mostly gone to Midaxi length, but Primark have some floor sweepers if you're open to shopping there.

MrsPinkCock · 06/06/2024 08:20

I love a maxi dress!

Im 5’9” though so I have to buy from tall shops (so I haven’t noticed any difference)

I did buy a “maxi” this week though which I am purposely wearing as a midi 😂

IrritableVowel · 06/06/2024 08:22

Yes!! I have noticed the same.
I hate the new length, it cuts my leg at its chunkiest spot

Hmm I think I might have tipped into an 18 so I'm not sure they go that high? I'll try it though!

This annoys me, I’m also chunky of calf. Technically they’re midaxis but it’s not always possible to tell shopping online and sellers hardly ever clarify on Vinted if something is it isn’t a full maxi.

Willmafrockfit · 06/06/2024 08:23

i want a midi but they are all far too long for me

Grasshopper75 · 06/06/2024 08:24

YES! Also, why are so many trousers now cropped? Been searching for a pair of floaty wide leg full length trousers for ages and all the ones I like end up being 3/4 length after I pick them up to try on.

OnceICaughtACold · 06/06/2024 08:24

I agree! Midaxi is fine but maxi should be full length.

I have a couple from Muthahood which are ankle length on me at 5’8, so they’d be proper maxi on you.

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/06/2024 08:25

Primark. I’ve just got a skirt which has 6” trailing on the floor!

They definitely do, if anything their sizes have got more generous.

I guess we're looking for ankle or floor length, but don't think I have seen those options/filters online

hennybeans · 06/06/2024 08:28

I’m 5’10 and wearing a maxi dress today that is decidedly mid calf on me.
I had a few from Boden around 2016 or so that were proper maxi dresses just above the floor on me. Might be worth looking on vinted for older dresses that are likely to be the longer length.

Primark changed their sizing a while ago so you shouldn’t have a problem finding your size there now. I think the go to 20-24 in primark now but definitely up to 20.

I remember years ago when they were still new to Uk mainland I think maybe one oddly cut thing fitted me but nothing else ever did so noone bigger shopped there.

KimberleyClark · 06/06/2024 08:31

I’m 5ft 1.5 and midaxis are usually ankle length on me.

SongbirdSusie · 06/06/2024 08:34

I’m only 5’7 and some of the M&S and via Next maxi dresses are floor sweepers.

minipie · 06/06/2024 08:34

Oh really? This is great news for me… I’m 5’3 and sounds like these would make perfect maxis on me. Where are all these midaxis being sold please ?

(Am also loving the cropped jeans trend)

Free People stuff is insanely long so any lucky long legged folk could try there.

I'm 5"5' and bought a maxi dress from Evans which I actually had to take up (as I wanted ankle length to avoid the risk of going arse over tit) so maybe try there?

Where are you buying these? I'm struggling to find petite midaxis and midi dresses. If I go into the regular section then all the hems touch the floor, which isn't practical.

KimberleyClark · 06/06/2024 08:55

I have bought a midaxi from M & S, and Wallis, Joe Browns and Roman Originals have petite ranges including maxis.

TheGoogleMum · 06/06/2024 08:58

I have the opposite problem midi is like a maxi on me (I'm under 5foot)

fuzzleberry · 06/06/2024 09:04

Oh @CharlotteStreetW1 I didn't know Evans was still a thing!

I also like floor length maxis (I have chunky ankles), and now buy almost solely on Vinted or eBay. If you search for Wallis, Per Una or Monsoon maxi dresses you will find loads of lovely designs from the last 10 years or so. I especially like the jersey material, they hang so nicely. I'm 5ft 5 and most of them are floor length on me. With Per Una make sure they're marked L (long) on the label, standard length isn't usually long enough. With Wallis, check the label to ensure it's not from their petite range, which is shorter.

FlatCola · 06/06/2024 09:22

Funny as I thought they must be getting longer to suit the generation of taller youngsters as I'm 5'6 but last year some I ordered were a bit too long and also had issues with regular jeans. I think was m&s or next, White stuff was on top of feet so was wearable but sure previous year's was about an inch or so shorter. Phase eight used to be really long as I had to get one altered.

I'd be ok with ankle length but don't like the calf length dresses. I have ordered a midaxi from the tall range expecting it to fit more towards maxi on me, it also had the benefit of a lower waist to accommodate a big bust.

I prefer when it states the dress length or the height of the model so can at least make an estimated guess of where it will fall to.

longdistanceclaraclara · 06/06/2024 09:26

I'm 1.7m and bought a couple of dresses from Next last week that are almost too long to wear without falling over

BoxOfCats · 06/06/2024 09:27

I'm 5"2 and loving it. Could never wear maxi length until now.
