To hate when people say a baby is ‘flirting’

What’s everyone’s opinion on this?
I was recently round my in laws for all of my DH’s family to meet out LO, after going to a family member and being passed to the next one LO was cooing and smiling, the first family member then said ‘oh she’s such a little flirt’ and continued making comment like this multiple times as she went to each person - I think it’s a really weird, what’s everyone else opinion’s?

Yeah I hate it too. It never stops. Next it moves to chat about their boyfriends or girlfriends at nursery and then school. So unnecessary.

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 04/06/2024 21:44

It’s vile. Makes me shudder

Changingplace · 04/06/2024 21:45

Hate it, cringe worthy.

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 04/06/2024 21:45

Also describing little girls, toddler age as “sexy”. Wtaf?

FTPM1980 · 04/06/2024 21:46

Erm I have encountered the boyfriend/girlfriend thing, but I have never heard anyone do the rest

TheRomanticOutlaw · 04/06/2024 21:47

Never heard babies/toddlers being described as either sexy or flirting. But if I did, I'd think 'yuk' so YANBU

Justsomethoughts · 04/06/2024 21:47

It is cringeworthy. But I think some people think they have to say something and they will have seen that old chestnut churned out previously so go with that. I’d hope no-one actually thinks that babies are flirting…

TruthorDie · 04/06/2024 21:47

Grim 🤮. Never heard anybody say it thank god about a baby or child

Jegersur · 04/06/2024 21:48

Awful. I’ve never heard anyone say that, though. It’s not a normal thing to say.

GreySofaCushion · 04/06/2024 21:48

I also find it disgusting and uncomfortable and will call it out. My DB is weird about saying everyone is nieces boyfriend and they have to go through him and SIL says adult males in the family are her daughters favourite and she looks so uncomfortable.

bakewellbride · 04/06/2024 21:50

I hate it with a passion too op! See also my MIL calling children 'sexy' 🤢

Jaexo · 04/06/2024 21:52

I just want to add that the family member was MIL, I just didn’t want to say it on my original post as there’s such a stigma about DILs and MILs and I didn’t want anything thinking I was being ‘one of those’ as we get on well, I just didn’t know how to feel about this

OP posts:
iamreallyabee · 04/06/2024 21:55

That's so weird, tell her

Beautifulbythebay · 04/06/2024 21:56

We had 3 ds's.. Mil told us they could never go nappy free as they would get sexual feelings.. Wtaf??

Idontjetwashthefucker · 04/06/2024 21:57

I've seen FB posts from an acquaintance calling her son "sexy little man". I don't know what goes through some people's heads

KeyWorker · 04/06/2024 22:00

It’s grim and you need to put a stop to it. Thankfully nobody ever said anything like that about my DD but I would have no problem saying “please stop using sexualised language about DD, she is not flirting/sexy/whatever, she is a baby.”

Thevelvelletes · 04/06/2024 22:01

He /she's a cutie,oh what a bonnie smile... normal.
A flirt ,sexy... seriously fucked up.

Swingingvvoter · 04/06/2024 22:02

Yes agree op, I would call it out.. Be blunt, it makes me feel uncomfortable because this is sexual language.

Marblessolveeverything · 04/06/2024 22:04

YANBU, I shuddered reading that.

NotAVampire · 04/06/2024 22:05

Yep, it’s absolutely gross and sleazy. Thankfully I’ve not heard it very often in person but even just reading it gives me the raging heebie-jeebies. Who are these people?

Comedycook · 04/06/2024 22:06

Agree. Yuck

Chickenuggetsticks · 04/06/2024 22:06

I’ve never heard that before, it’s grotesque.

HenryCavillsPerfectTeeth · 04/06/2024 22:06

Yes my ex mil used to call her grandkids "sexy man" or "sexy pants." Weird. Just absolutely bizarre.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/06/2024 22:06

I hate it when people call babies sexy.Yes really.

CuteCillian · 04/06/2024 22:10

Never heard 'sexy' in reference to a baby, but my grandmother used to say my LO was flirting when they looked at her in a slightly shy way...it really gave me the ick.
