To use one makeup brand? (Lighthearted)

Oddest conversation just happened at lunch today with a few friends. Talking about New Year’s resolutions and where we were with ours. Our group takes them as seriously as we can (which isn’t much) 😂 For context, my resolution was to declutter and go “minimalist” in an effort to save money.

I mentioned I’d put up all my expensive makeup brands (Charlotte Tilbury, Armani, Dior, etc) for special occasions and had adopted a more simpler makeup look using just 5 ELF products for my everyday, which had saved me a lot more money as the brand is more affordable (think the most expensive thing if like £20). I felt quite proud of myself for this as I’ve been known to purchase makeup I don’t need as a guilty pleasure, and since adopting this new routine, I’ve saved loads of money that honestly would have been wasted. Or at least, I did feel proud until a friend turned around and said it was “weird” of me to only use ONE brand. That it was boring and “elitist”…

Cue confusion from everyone else at the table 🙈

Ive been giggling about it all afternoon. This friend is known for being a bit eccentric but this was a new one for us all. So mumsnet, tell me, am I weird to use just ONE makeup brand? (The horror….)

Your decision to use one brand of makeup isn't boring or odd

But the entire conversation surrounding sounds boring and odd.

That’s actually separate to this 😂 I’d had a bad day yesterday with the OCD, though it’s funny to see how much my convos lately revolve around makeup

I was being a bit down on myself yesterday, not sure what part of that you’re not understanding. My boss was actually part of this lunch, and sure, these friends are colleagues, so maybe the term is a bit loose.

Apologies for not explaining myself to your satisfaction. Didn’t realize I wasn’t allowed post something separately in a light hearted fashion? Mental health isn’t linear, so feeling very bogged down yesterday and a little more lighthearted today is quite normal I feel?

Ok so this lighthearted post has been derailed by someone who apparently doesn’t believe those with mental health issues can have good and bad days 😂😂😂 mods have been contacted because apparently my posting is so egregious

Thanks to everyone who commented though ❤️ Nice to know I’m not odd (although…)

It was tbh, though I should have added these friends are mostly work colleagues (so the term friend is probably too much). It was about 5 mins of just talking about New Year’s resolutions and if we’d kept to them. All I said was that I’d saved loads of money cutting back on makeup & switching to multi use products from one brand. That’s it, that was the whole sentence. The reaction from my colleague seemed a bit out there though.

So yes, a boring conversation, and definitely an odd reaction!!!

Why? Sounds like a really normal conversation to me. Just a general chat about lifestyles and resolutions and stuff. My colleagues and I were talking about similar stuff the other day around saving money and decluttering, prompted by someone complimenting me on my jacket and me saying that I'd got it second-hand because I'm trying to buy less stuff new these days.

OP, your colleague sounds nuts. Apart from anything, what's elitist about using ELF makeup? It's a budget brand. It's not like you'd suddenly announced that you've decided that no makeup product will ever grace your face unless it's Tom Ford!

(Also, not the point I know, but ELF is sooooo good, isn't it? Their eye crayons are honestly better than my Bobbi Brown ones and are about a quarter of the price.)

I don’t think it’s odd at all or having a conversation about it with female friends/colleagues is either.

If you were saying you would only use one brand, for example Chanel, then I would maybe get the elitist comment.

From what I gather you have pared down your daily routine, which sounds good to me 😀

Didn’t see the deleted posts so don’t know where the mental health comments are coming from.

Yes 😂😂😂

op i too read your thread yesterday and it was very distressing

henlake7 · 04/06/2024 17:00

I dont think its elitists....also ELF is damned good!

Also if wearing one brand is so elitist then I am a complete snob....
my entire wardrobe today comes from House of Primark!!😄

Basically I posted yesterday about how my ocd flares up sometimes and the latest obsession was feeling like certain initials were contaminated, and that my makeup brands were unsanitary because of the initials they started with (it’s mad, I know but such is the way of OCD). I was decluttering my large makeup supply when this triggered, and feeling a bit down, popped on here.

the conversation with my colleagues today actually had nothing to do with it, though I understand how it seems an odd coincidence. I obviously woke up with a clearer head this morning, as is the way with mental illness not being linear, and my changing my makeup routine occurred months ago, so wasn’t anything to do with yesterday’s obsessions.

apparently though a poster thought that quoting my post yesterday back at me was some sort of “gotcha!”. What they were trying to “catch me” for though, I’m not sure. Basically acted as though I was being nefarious or needed a welfare check called??? 😂😂😂

The lovely mods took care of it

Im like you OP and I have my “second tier” makeup stash which I use every day in order to stretch out the life of my expensive stuff! Elitist is a bizarre way to describe this..unless Elf is the new Chanel?! It is good!! 😆

Grazyna80 · 04/06/2024 17:23

Hmmmm, must try Elf now.

VolvoFan · 04/06/2024 17:24

I've been getting back into makeup after so many years. I keep seeing ELF in my Amazon suggestions. I might give it a look.

Also, any makeup you have that is 6 months old, you might want to toss it out. I never knew how much bacteria lives in makeup, particularly liquid eyeliners. Eye infections? No flippin' thank you.
