To use one makeup brand? (Lighthearted)

Oddest conversation just happened at lunch today with a few friends. Talking about New Year’s resolutions and where we were with ours. Our group takes them as seriously as we can (which isn’t much) 😂 For context, my resolution was to declutter and go “minimalist” in an effort to save money.

I mentioned I’d put up all my expensive makeup brands (Charlotte Tilbury, Armani, Dior, etc) for special occasions and had adopted a more simpler makeup look using just 5 ELF products for my everyday, which had saved me a lot more money as the brand is more affordable (think the most expensive thing if like £20). I felt quite proud of myself for this as I’ve been known to purchase makeup I don’t need as a guilty pleasure, and since adopting this new routine, I’ve saved loads of money that honestly would have been wasted. Or at least, I did feel proud until a friend turned around and said it was “weird” of me to only use ONE brand. That it was boring and “elitist”…

Cue confusion from everyone else at the table 🙈

Ive been giggling about it all afternoon. This friend is known for being a bit eccentric but this was a new one for us all. So mumsnet, tell me, am I weird to use just ONE makeup brand? (The horror….)

Im like you OP and I have my “second tier” makeup stash which I use every day in order to stretch out the life of my expensive stuff! Elitist is a bizarre way to describe this..unless Elf is the new Chanel?! It is good!! 😆

Elf is very good but no, it is definitely not the new Chanel!! NYX is a good brand very similar to elf as well I feel but I don’t think I’d describe either as elitist 😂😂😂

op i too read your thread yesterday and it was very distressing

I suppose I can understand why. I was not in the best headspace yesterday, very frustrated with my OCD. However I’ve had it for over 20 years now, so I’m used to it. Completely understand though how it seems distressing from the outside looking in

I used to love ELF when it first came out. Everything was £1. Ah the good ol’ days

ELF gets multiple mentions.

Oh no I feel like I am The Elitist as I was popping on to say I've started only using Charlotte Tilbury 😂
Also relate to OCD and good/bad days and general shite MH which fluctuates.

NippyCrab · 04/06/2024 18:03

MH is pants, I'm up and down like an Alton Towers roller coaster at times! With meds 😄
Anyway, ELF is brilliant, I have a liquid blush and a powder and love it. I will try the eye crayons now that they've been mentioned above. Xx

Someone call the police, we have a crime to report...😂

Woohoo join me in the horrible elitist club!! 😂😂 Idk about you but did you notice your switch to one brand was unintentional? That’s how mine was!

As is the way this lovely rollercoaster goes! I will say I’m a bit sensitive still today, but after years of mental health treatment, I bounce back quite quickly thankfully. I do understand how it must look like I’m in need of a section one day, and oddly fine the next but we roll with the waves don’t we? 😂

I just got the liquid blush about a month ago and it’s brill! Using it as a lip stain as well 😂

@allwiredup ooo I will try it as a lip stain. I get the look fantastic beauty box but there's not been much in the way of cosmetics. I have too many mascaras so give them away now.
I don't know if I'm lucky to have extreme mood swings or not, I would absolutely not cope being in a black hole for weeks/months.

VeryStressedMum · 04/06/2024 18:33

I am the opposite and while I don't use that many products I use the ones I like everyday. The ones I happen to like are quite expensive but life is too short to save the good stuff for only special occasions.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/06/2024 19:01

@allwiredup kind of, I was favouring their glow stuff and not replacing the others, started to try their other products like lip stuff and voila a full house!
