People who knock and don't stand visible by the door

Im not waiting for a delivery or anyone to arrive. I was having nap, Maybe I'm just in a grumpy mood. But why do people do this? Bang on the door/ring doorbell the sender out of view of the eye view thing or camera. Had it just now. Banging the door..ring the bell. Can't see them. I thought it was my husband as allbi could see was side of jumper arm. So I opened the door.

No. It was a delivery driver wanting me to take a neighbours parcel. That's fine. But why hide your self? Happens a lot! we have mNy delivery drivers. Male and female. The female drivers never do this.

They're not hiding, they're just not bothering to think of the best position to be in. I think that's fair enough, they're always in a hurry and presumably most people answer the door anyway. Female and male drivers do it in our porch, if I was the kind of person who worried about such things I'd wind the Ring footage back a few seconds before opening. Or speak through the doorbell.

Cheeesus · 31/05/2024 17:17

I wonder if your doorbell isn’t in the best place?

bunhead1979 · 31/05/2024 17:19

How are they meant to know where you want them to stand?

Boutonnière · 31/05/2024 17:20

Without knowing the layout of your door/entry/porch it’s very difficult to say but people ring my bell then step back as otherwise they are looming up on me when I open the door ( it’s a small open porch. )

Had a rare Jehovah’s Witness pair ringing the bell recently - I opened it as I thought it was a delivery and not sure who was more alarmed by my involuntary shriek- me or the 6’6” suited man filling the doorway. (He was v apologetic )

Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:23

The doorbell is in the middle high up face height (average height) its just a path. Nothing behind them they need to get away from. They can just step back a little so they are visible. They move to the side out of the way. Literally no reason ti do this.

I am grumpy though. I haven't slept well in ages and was in a deep sleep nap and it woke me up. To have a neighbours package thrusted in my face.

I don't have a doorbell camera or an eye hole thingy, so I just have to open the door without seeing who is on the other side every single time. It's never occurred to me that I need to know who is on the other side before I open the door.

Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:24

@mrsm43s fair enough. We get a lot of jehovas witnesses, people selling things etc in my area. I don't want to speak to them. So I look who it is first.

But what if it's a tiger?

scalt · 31/05/2024 17:28

On Mumsnet, it's a sin to knock on anyone's door, without giving three months' notice. The fact that you are delivering something ordered by the householder is irrelevant.

I know what you mean, though. The blurry outline of a hi-vi, a clipboard, a lanyard, or two callers at once is often a caller you don't want.

Itisal · 31/05/2024 17:29

Could you position your doormat so that people kinda end up in the right position? I think people tend to stand on doormats if not too close to an opening door and that could then act like your stand here indicator!!

KreedKafer · 31/05/2024 17:29

Why would you expect them to even notice or care that you've got a camera, let alone consider the best angle for your requirements? It's a front path, not a film set with crosses taped on the floor for the actors to hit their marks.

Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:31

@scalt no problem with people knocking and normally I just answer but I wasn't expecting anyone/thing and just feeling rubbish and didn't want to deal with anything unnecessary. But they kept knocking and ringing. Neighbour was out. But because my car was there they said I must be have been home... 😐 I would have ignored it if they didn't keep banging

OP posts:
Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:32

@KreedKafer alright love. I have a peep hole too. It's not about the camera. It's about not making yourself visible when your knocking at someone's house when they aren't expecting you!

thedendrochronologist · 31/05/2024 17:32

You need to check your ring doorbell. Mine has 180 vision. It's impossible not to be seen on it unless you are Spider-Man.

scalt · 31/05/2024 17:33

In the book About a Boy, it's noted that at first, Will looks at empty space when he opens his front door, because his caller (young Marcus) is a good foot shorter than the average hawker selling J-cloths, so he wasn't standing in the right place.

KrisAkabusi · 31/05/2024 17:33

There is. You've literally just said why. So that they're out of the way if the door opens outwards or somebody steps outside.

Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:34

@thedendrochronologist it's not a ring one. Just one from amazon. I don't use it to answer the door. It's more because someone broke into our car twice. I check the peep hole before opening really.

OP posts:
Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:34

@KrisAkabusi no out of the way as in out of the way of view. There's nothing to get away from. No flower pots, no fence nothing

sophi1995 · 31/05/2024 17:37

I doubt he was intentionally hiding from you. You're overthinking this, especially with the "female drivers never do this" comment.

rwalker · 31/05/2024 17:37

I work for one of the utilities never even accrued to me to make sure I was in range when I knock on a door

Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:38

I'm not over thinking it. It happens alot.@sophi1995

Springchickenonion · 31/05/2024 17:40

Fair enough. I'm unreasonable. I accept that.

But what if it's a tiger?

Invite him in for tea.

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 31/05/2024 21:17

People do this at my door. I don't have a ring doorbell though. My front door is on the side of the house with steps going up. For some stupid reason people like to knock the door & then stand at the bottom of the steps, so I basically have to come out of my house to see who it is. Utterly pointless & drives me mad.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/05/2024 21:53

I've never had an eye view thing or s camera. I just open the door. If it were Jehovah's Witnesses or something, I'd politely tell them I'm not interested and close the door again.
