Trump has been a "enterprising" businessman all his life, operating close to the line. I always thought he was guilty, but am I being unreasonable to be astonished that he was FOUND guilty, given the peculiar politics of the US.

YABU yes, the good sense of the jurors over-ruled the partisan politics, as it should
YANBU remarkable verdicts, given the political situation

I thought he would be found guilty and rightly so. What I fail to understand is that he can still run for presidency and is likely to increase the number of voters who support him as a result.

VladimirVsVolodymyr · 30/05/2024 22:20

I'm just watching it, not a political person myself but I doubt it will affect him negatively but who knows.
Is it really a book keeping issue? It does seem political though, but what do I know. Definitely a huge embarrassment for the country.

goingdownfighting · 30/05/2024 22:21

Om not sure what this means now? He's got himeself a world wide audience. £1Ms of prime time political party broadcast right there for him.

MountCaramel · 30/05/2024 22:57

Only in America as the saying goes.......

MrsTomRipley · 30/05/2024 23:01

It's weird as fuck. Apparently he can actually become President - even if he is behind bars !

Blackcats7 · 30/05/2024 23:05

I hope the jurors and all the legal officials are protected given the lunacy of his followers (and him of course) as we have seen the persecution and violence which happens if trump doesn’t get his way.

ExasperatedManager · 30/05/2024 23:07

What I find astonishing is that he can still become president after this. I'm guessing that he'll get elected and then pardon himself, which is utterly mind boggling.

For all that I often look at our politics and think this country is fucked, the US is on a whole other level.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 30/05/2024 23:10

This verdict will make his president again

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 30/05/2024 23:11

Florida law deprives convicted felons of certain Civil Rights including the right to vote, serve on a jury, hold public office, and restricts the issuance and renewal of some professional licenses such as real estate and insurance. Upon final expiration of an offender's supervision, providing they have no outstanding criminal charges or outstanding monetary obligations as a result of their criminal conviction, offenders may apply for Restoration of Civil Rights lost in the State of Florida with exception of the right to own and possess firearms.

Does this mean he can't stand?
Or is there a federal law which overrides state law?

CinnamonTart · 30/05/2024 23:13

DH is american and told me a couple of nights ago that he’s going to vote for Trump . It makes me feel sick.

MrsTomRipley · 30/05/2024 23:13

He can stand - and he can pardon himself.
Fucking hell - these are the funniest laws, and the most stupid.

Unfortunately we are heading in the same direction

LaurieFairyCake · 30/05/2024 23:14

I don't understand how anyone could vote for that orange lunatic

He's literally a CRIMINAL 🤷‍♀️

platwlob · 30/05/2024 23:16

I don't actually find it that astounding that he can still run, ultimately it's a democracy, the legal system has done its job, it's up to people now to vote as they see fit. If prison meant you were barred from presidency the legal system may be hijacked by the government to influence elections. It's a similar train of thought as to why we do not put our own MPs through national security vetting, it's to preserve democracy.

Of course I pray he isn't voted in, but I do understand why in a (theoretical) democracy he is still able to run.

Can you say why? I'm really intrigued to know how anyone can vote for him, obviously especially now but years ago as well. I just can't see why anyone would think he was a sensible choice.

If he becomes president again he can't pardon himself. He was found guilty in a state court not a federal one.

What is his reasoning? I honestly can't get my head around why anyone would even consider voting for him.

What are you going to do?

Whatshallabee · 30/05/2024 23:22

If this was a political trial then how did it become political? It’s either fraud or it isn’t.

Oh, OK. I had not understood that.

Can he still stand?

Lonelycrab · 30/05/2024 23:25

Well I’m not sure about your yanbu/Yabu op but it’s absolutely the right result. He’s as crooked and bad as they come.
Quite how so many are in his lure is a complete mystery to me, I guess he taps into their hate and fear…but it’s a good day for justice and basic common bloody sense.

I literally never say this, but make him your ex DH. Trump is a dangerous lunatic.

How is that even possible?!

Blackcats7 · 30/05/2024 23:29

Trump has already said he will free all the capital rioters, maybe even the nutcase who tried to kill nancy pelosi’s husband. He calls them hostages rather than convicted prisoners. His followers are therefore encouraged to do whatever in the belief that come the glorious day their hero is president once again they will be rewarded.
However shit it is here at least we aren’t in America.

baffld · 30/05/2024 23:41

Trump was born slippery, inherited a fortune and allegedly even ripped off the mafia for a million dollars.
However, the Democrats have degraded the office of POTUS forever. No matter who a future incumbent is, when trying to deal with the likes of Xi or Putin, they will be viewed only as a potential future defendant.
FDR and JFK will be spinning in their graves tonight, there are no grown-ups in charge and we are a damn sight closer to WW3 than we were 24 hours ago.

nocoolnamesleft · 30/05/2024 23:42

Wrong charge. He should have been impeached for treason.

Sunhatweather · 30/05/2024 23:49

Those are odd YANBU/YABU so I can’t vote, but I’m sure this will all make him more electable.
I’m not a Trump fan particularly, but clearly he’s part of a political witch hunt. I think Biden is likely also a criminal, so I couldn’t choose between the two, frankly.
Isn’t it time George Clooney came riding to the rescue? Surely his time has arrived.
