“Vacay” gives me the ick

Asprogata · 28/05/2024 20:08

Moved here about a year ago (South East if it matters) and noticed a sharp increase in people saying “vacay”. There’s now a mumsnet ad thread here with “Vacay” in the title.

I’ve no idea why, but it really grates on me (like “rub salt in my eyeballs” grates!) Probably entirely irrational, but anyone else?

I hate it. It’s up there with Platty joobs and Genny lec. Just use proper words!

Pennyandolive · 28/05/2024 20:24

Says the person using the phrase, “Gives me the ick.”

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 28/05/2024 20:25

Holibobs 🤮

Says the person using the phrase, “Gives me the ick.”

Guilty as charged and fair point!

I saw the Mumsnet promoted thread and couldn’t work out what they were on about initially. When I worked out they meant vacation, it was a toss up what irritated me more - the unnecessary Americanism or the teeth grindingly naff abbreviation

FrogandTrumpet · 28/05/2024 20:33

Could be worse. Could be holibobs.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 28/05/2024 20:36

I thought it was a typo - sorry typing error

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 29/05/2024 07:36

I twitch every time I see that stupid MN thread title.

It sounds so stupid and immature.

Shirtella · 29/05/2024 07:39

I feel your pain. Everyone knows that the correct word is holliers.

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/05/2024 07:42

It is highly irritating yes but this is such a cliched discussion. There’s a thread every day about people hating the words “vacay” and “hollibobs” and “hubs”. Pretty much everyone hates these words: why can’t we just all stop saying them and then no need for endless tedious discussion about it.

Londonnight · 29/05/2024 07:43

I also thought it was a typing error. It looks dreadful, and MN should sort it!
I know no one in real life who ever uses that phrase for a holiday.

NashvilleQueen · 29/05/2024 07:44

I hate all these twee phrases but will admit to enjoying platty joobs for comedy value.

BobnLen · 29/05/2024 07:46

Probably one of those people that say bubs

Birdseyetrifle · 29/05/2024 07:46

Yep, it is bloody awful.

Agreed, totally different from our "hols". 😁

AIstolemylunch · 29/05/2024 07:53

Wtaf is platty joobs

tennesseewhiskey1 · 29/05/2024 07:54

’gives me the ick’ absolutely gives me the fucking rage 🤣. I don’t even know what platt joobs or genny leccy means either. Hollibobs i e heard (bizarre)

SpringerFall · 29/05/2024 07:55

I thought it was some new vaginal birthing acronym

Fatotter · 29/05/2024 07:57

flipflop76 · 29/05/2024 07:58

Platty joobs is platinum jubilee and genny lec is general election (I don't say them!)

Edited

Yeah I hate “the ick” and it’s rampant over-use much more than I hate “vacay”. Although vacay is cringe.

But more than any of this I am so tired of reading endless threads about cringeworthy words from people who think they are being really original.

Everyone hates fucking hollibobs and hubs. Can we move on from it?

Or staycation when you're actually ON HOLIDAY albeit in your own country!

Churchview · 29/05/2024 08:03

This thread has made me totes emosh.

I have zero problem with people using slang like holliers or vacay, whether or not it's slang I use myself.

People using staycation when they mean holiday can burn though.
