“Vacay” gives me the ick

Asprogata · 28/05/2024 20:08

Moved here about a year ago (South East if it matters) and noticed a sharp increase in people saying “vacay”. There’s now a mumsnet ad thread here with “Vacay” in the title.

I’ve no idea why, but it really grates on me (like “rub salt in my eyeballs” grates!) Probably entirely irrational, but anyone else?

Yes, I agree. I can't stand twee contractions of words and phrases that make the user sound like a toddler. Cray cray drives me ... well, drives me cray cray😆

Not everyone @Thepeopleversuswork has been here since time immemorial browsing through threads about annoying words. And, what's more, opening them just to complain about them. I hate the term 'scroll by' but I'll make an exception here just for you.

Wtaf is platty joobs

It's that bloke who's the new Sewing Bee host to blame for that one.

zzpleb · 29/05/2024 08:10

The ad thread was the first time I'd come across 'vacay' (thanks Mumsnet 🙄).

I actually don't mind holibobs but then I've only ever heard it once in real life.

Misuse of the word 'staycation' annoys me too but I think that's in too common usage to be corrected.

Or staycation when you're actually ON HOLIDAY albeit in your own country!

Yes!

You can actually go abroad for less than you can holiday in the UK. Someone posted something about this on a thread yesterday about Cornwall.

SpringerFall · 29/05/2024 08:13

In the 'official' medical sense this is fine but I am yet to see a long thread without the word 'hormones' in the first or second line

I have zero problem with people using slang like holliers or vacay, whether or not it's slang I use myself.

People using staycation when they mean holiday can burn though.

Yes, I hate the use of 'staycation' for going away in your home country. This seemed to gain a lot of traction during Covid restrictions. It's only a 'staycation' if you stay in your own house.

’gives me the ick’ absolutely gives me the fucking rage 🤣. I don’t even know what platt joobs or genny leccy means either. Hollibobs i e heard (bizarre)

Edited

Yes. I hate that ick phrase. It sounds so childish.

olderbutwiser · 29/05/2024 08:15

I’m with you. I’d never heard it until it was in that Mumsnet promoted thread, and wish I never had.

i do like The Ick though - it adds something of its own. More subtle/less dramatic than “makes me sick” or “I’m disgusted”.

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/05/2024 07:42

It is highly irritating yes but this is such a cliched discussion. There’s a thread every day about people hating the words “vacay” and “hollibobs” and “hubs”. Pretty much everyone hates these words: why can’t we just all stop saying them and then no need for endless tedious discussion about it.

If you were new to MN today, you would not know about the other threads.

Why join the thread if it’s so tedious for you? Odd.

Platty joobs is platinum jubilee and genny lec is general election (I don't say them!)

Ooooohhhhhh - I thought genny lec was electricity produced by a generator 😂

BCBird · 29/05/2024 08:33

Never heard them thankfully. Have been known to say jolly days though-ick😂

Did Mike off Ghosts really start platty joobs!? Oh my days, I luvs him (fans face and wipes away mascara with tips of ring fingers).

The modern world lost me completely with the contraction of the two words Britain and Exit.
