Did your dad sit at the head of the table growing up?

If you had a father at home, was he head of the table at meal times?

Just thinking about the way we sat as a family at the table and yes dad was head?
Wonder if other people ever think now about the way they are sat?

There wasn’t really a ‘head’. My mum sat at one end and my dad at the other.

cherish123 · 26/05/2024 18:58

No. We had a round table.

Same.

OverthinkerTinker · 26/05/2024 18:59

My Dad did sit at the table, but doesn't anymore. DH's Dad still sits at the head of the table. DH's Dad will often sit at the head of the table when he goes to his adult DCs house too.

My DH does not sit at the head of the table at our house.

Topofthemountain · 26/05/2024 18:59

No, mainly because we had a round table, though it was a double leaf and the one was always dropped.

winchwarrior · 26/05/2024 19:00

Family of four, we all sat on the sides. No-one at either ‘head’. If we had guests, usually one parent would sit at the ‘head’ so they could get up to the kitchen more easily and then whichever child was skinniest sat at the other end because there wasn’t much room.

My paternal grandparents, grandfather always sat at the ‘head’ even if it was just the two of them.

XenoBitch · 26/05/2024 19:00

Our table was round, so not sure how that would work.

Topofthemountain · 26/05/2024 19:00

We have the same round table now, we all have our own seats.

Lamelie · 26/05/2024 19:00

I honestly can’t remember but DH always sits at the head and I have ‘my place’ which is best placed for jumping up.
Drives the DD’s mad 😂

Yes. But he was a complete knob.

fieldsofbutterflies · 26/05/2024 19:00

No. I sat at the head, my dad sat near the window/radio and my mum opposite him.

Redglitter · 26/05/2024 19:01

If we ate in the kitchen we sat 2 on either side of the table. If we ate in the dining room we sat one on each of the 4 sides. We all had our own chairs out of habit but I wouldn't say Dads was at ths head

TheRomanticOutlaw · 26/05/2024 19:01

No, we had a round table! He wasn't a 'head of the house, head of the table' type anyway, though we did have to ask to leave the table when we'd finished, but that was either to him or mum. That was 1970s. He also never did the carving the Christmas turkey at the table thing either.

GreyBlackLove · 26/05/2024 19:01

Parent at each end, kids on either side between them. Technically my mum would sit at the "better" end. This was near the window so the seat framed by the room.

Zanatdy · 26/05/2024 19:01

No, we had a round table so no-one sat at the head, but it was my mum who wore the trousers!

itsmylife7 · 26/05/2024 19:02

We were too poor and no space for a table, so can't answer your question.

Didimum · 26/05/2024 19:03

No. We didn’t have fixed seats at the table. We sat wherever, and do the same now with our kids.

I don’t think there is really a ‘head’ seat unless you have a certain number of people?

MissyB1 · 26/05/2024 19:03

Yes, but mum was at the other end, older siblings gs on the more roomy side of the table, us younger ones squashed at the back!

burnoutbabe · 26/05/2024 19:03

Dad at one end, mum at the kitchen end.

Us kids on sides. Sometimes 2, sometimes 5.

This is us now at then 77 and us 11/45/48/48 and 51.

🙄 Why bother replying then? Are you offended by people talking about tables?

LuluBlakey1 · 26/05/2024 19:05

No, we had a round table- there was only my mam and dad and me so it was never pulled out to make an oval.

DH and I have a big rectangular table in the dining room but we usually eat in the kitchen where we have a smaller rectangular table. 3 small DC. We sit anywhere . If it's just me and DH we sit on opposite sides facing each other.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 26/05/2024 19:06

No, family of 4 and we sat opposite each other. Now we’re a family of 5 and the 7 year old sits at the head of the table but he does rule the roost!

utilitarianism · 26/05/2024 19:06

Yes, Dad sat at the head and the rest of us had our own typical places. When we visit, Dad still sits at the head. I guess it's just tradition in our family.

Both grandfathers sat at the head of the table, too, iirc.

As an adult in my own house, we rarely eat at the table. When we do, there's no-one at the head or foot, but rather along the sides.

Awrite · 26/05/2024 19:07

Weirdly, we didn't have set seats. Big family, we sat anywhere. Dad ate with us.

My house - I sit at the head of the table. Dh sits to my left.

Dearg · 26/05/2024 19:07

We had a square table; but DH’s family were big on this. After FIL passed, SIL’ husband tried to take the seat as new ‘head of the family’ ( being oldest male). That did not go well…
