Why do people karate chop their cushions and pillows?

Bob104 · 22/05/2024 19:47

When did this become a thing?
Why do people think its posh?
What am I missing?? I much prefer to just see a lovely plumped cushion?!
Someone please explain😂

I can't explain because it's inexplicable.
Looks stupid and trying too hard.
I'm in the plumped up cushion camp with you OP.

Cofaki · 22/05/2024 19:51

No idea. It looks shit.

Screamingabdabz · 22/05/2024 19:52

They look like upside down vulvas. Vile and fashion slavey. I’m in the plumped camp too.

minou123 · 22/05/2024 19:53

I know what you mean.

I don't get it either. I think the dent in the cushion looks silly.

But I suppose, everyone is different and some people quite like the karate-chop look.

Riversideandrelax · 22/05/2024 19:53

I don't like it either. They look the opposite of nice plumped up cushions!

mrwalkensir · 22/05/2024 19:54

I'm guessing that it shows that they're feather not a foam cushion pad?

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 22/05/2024 19:54

One of my friends (who aside from karate chopping cushions I do like) has loads of followers on Insta and made a video of how to karate chop a cushion 🤷‍♀️

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 22/05/2024 19:55

It doesn't look posh, it looks the opposite! I think it was made popular by the vacuous Mrs Hinch who's almost as far from posh as it's possible to be.

ToxicChristmas · 22/05/2024 19:57

I don't like the look -I prefer a full pillow. I've only ever seen people do it on Instagram, never in "real life".

Bob104 · 22/05/2024 19:58

I'm so glad it isn’t just me!
I mean each to their own but I don't need to prove my pillows have feathers or spend time watching youtube videos on karate chopping.
I guess it could help with anger management though?! 🥋👊🪶

Your OP made me laugh, but I am as puzzled as you are.

I don't get the hoover lines on carpet either. But then I hate carpets, so what do I know.

Speak for yourself!

Allmarbleslost · 22/05/2024 20:05

Because Instagram told them to I think

LaWench · 22/05/2024 20:05

I assumed it was to make them bow- like 🎀. My cheap cushions couldn't manage it. [Pleb]

Fontainebleau007 · 22/05/2024 20:08

I don't like it either I like plump looking cushions Confused

Ispywithmylittlepie · 22/05/2024 20:25

The cushions in this house are used to make dens by our children.
I will never have the time or inclination to situate a cushion nicely or make it look like a bow or a swan. I don't put any on the bed and I definitely don't karate chop them. That would be weird.

UpUpUpU · 22/05/2024 20:26

No idea either!

I saw an advert pop up the other day for dog beds. It was one of those huge comfy looking ones and it even had a karate chopped cushion!

mybeautifulhorse · 22/05/2024 20:33

Weird isn't it? It seems quite a new thing, my mum was right into naff decor in my youth (she'd definitely have had a silver crushed velvet sofa and mirrored furniture of those had been a thing then) and I never saw her do that to a cushion.

I do put my sofa cushions on the diagonal though and apparently that's wrong, so what do I know!

Also hate hoover lines in the carpet, I think it looks like the hooverer is unhinged.

Bob104 · 22/05/2024 20:38

Now I do love hoover lines.
But thats just about everything being done neatly.

I see it like decorative cushions on the bed, just weird.
My sofa cushions spend most of their time on the floor, toddlers are awesome 🙄

BettyOBarley · 22/05/2024 20:46

Mrs Hinch started it all

Yes! what is with the decorative cushions on the bed?!?

Admittedly, i did try it once and put lovely cushions on my bed.
But after one evening of taking them off and one morning putting them all back on, I was already sick of them and thought what's the fucking point. 🤷‍♀️

shellshocks · 22/05/2024 22:31

Same as any other trend really. For ages single cushions were placed in the corners of a sofa, then they covered the entire back of the sofa in a kind of fan, then they were placed face on, then multiple cushions stacked face on, then the chopping began. Timeline might not be exactly right but that's how I remember it.

YesItsMe44 · 22/05/2024 23:36

It is a trend from the 80s. I recall reading that it was done as a joke, or random idea, and people thought it was "the thing to do." I absolutely hate the look. If there's many pillows on a couch with the choo I think they pissed off the cat and this is the cat's way of getting back, to just jump onto each pillow and make its mark.

JustMove · 22/05/2024 23:38

Because insta told them to.
