What has bitten me? Warning: pic's included

Felt an itch while out last night, located on inside calf, where seam of skinny jeans lies.
Took off jeans about 11:30 and noticed a very small bite. Took oral antihistamine and bathed area.
Small blister had developed by morning, also red and rather warm. Pen marked edge of red area at 8:30am
This is it now, 24 hours after first feeling the itch.
Any ideas of the critter that caused this?

A horsefly?

Smartiepants79 · 19/05/2024 20:38

Spider?
Some mozzies if you’re sensitive to bites.
Horsefly bites are extremely painful and very itchy.

yhk · 19/05/2024 20:39

Could be anything really. Mosquito, midge, flea, tick...

How do you usually react to insect bites?

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:39

@Crackwillow

I had been wearing my jeans all day, they are tight. I'm not sure on could have got so far up/down my leg. I do react in this way to horseplay though. Good suggestion x

Could be a Blandford fly, they tend to blister.

NippyCrab · 19/05/2024 20:42

Horsefly horrible evil beasties. Get to the pharmacy tomorrow.
Edited to add that they can bite through clothes too, I googled them after one really bad bite and they have a razor like chomp.

ClareBlue · 19/05/2024 20:43

Horse flying can manifest differently including swelling and a dot like lump but the pic I have included is typical. Looks very much like yours

@Smartiepants79
@yhk

I do react to mosquito like this, I'm in Northern England.
I suppose it could be a mosquito.
My cats had killed a rather large spider in the home the night before 😬
Not spiders in my jeans 😭

Moier · 19/05/2024 20:47

It's an allergic reaction to a mosquito bite.. definitely.
My sister had one.
Antihistamines and some hydrocortisone cream.

ClareBlue · 19/05/2024 20:48

Horseflys can get through clothes if they are determined to get a bite in.

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:48

@NippyCrab
God God, through clothes. 😐
@ClareBlue
Thank, you. Very similar.
I have been bitten by one before and it hurt (while it was on me) my skin reacted in the same way 😒

OP posts:
firef1y · 19/05/2024 20:50

Horse fly
I react in a similar if more extreme way. Do your utmost not to scratch/burst the blister. IME they are very prone to getting infected

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:50

@Moier
I have only reacted like this to mosquitoes while abroad.
I took antihistamine as soon as I got home and again today x

ploberby · 19/05/2024 20:51

Could be a reaction to hogweed?

Daphnis156 · 19/05/2024 20:52

It might be plague.

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:54

@ploberby
Definitely not hogweed, not been out of the city yesterday. It does grow in the countryside nearby.

OP posts:
Elphame · 19/05/2024 20:54

Mosquitos will do that to me.

I react horribly to insect bites and some blisters are easily 2cm across

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:55

@Daphnis156
I would take the plague over creature bites 😂

OP posts:
MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:57

@Elphame
It's rubbish, poor you.
I hope you have a bite free summer x

OP posts:
MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 20:59

@firef1y
Yes, I will try by best not to let the blister burst. x

I got one like that on my ankle from a tiger mosquito in Northern France last year. Ended up having to get it drained, antibiotics, the works. Stupid mozzies.

Imisscoffee2021 · 19/05/2024 21:18

I got bitten by mosquitos in Sweden one summer as they're rife in the North mlssy stretches and we were hiking so no escape. A few of my bites went like that, bug blister exactly like yours with the allergic reaction swelling round.

KnittedCardi · 19/05/2024 21:23

Yeah, mossie bite. I do that with the little tiger bastards in Italy and France. Never been bitten here though! I do react to midges here.
