What has bitten me? Warning: pic's included

Felt an itch while out last night, located on inside calf, where seam of skinny jeans lies.
Took off jeans about 11:30 and noticed a very small bite. Took oral antihistamine and bathed area.
Small blister had developed by morning, also red and rather warm. Pen marked edge of red area at 8:30am
This is it now, 24 hours after first feeling the itch.
Any ideas of the critter that caused this?

Horseflies do that to me

shuffleofftobuffalo · 19/05/2024 21:32

Horsefly or a spider I reckon. Be very careful with that blister.

WonderingWanda · 19/05/2024 21:33

I get that from horseflies

BuckFadger · 19/05/2024 21:37

Are you sure it's not a stuck on Jelly Tot?

@Crackwillow

I had been wearing my jeans all day, they are tight. I'm not sure on could have got so far up/down my leg. I do react in this way to horseplay though. Good suggestion x

Horseplay...🤣
Was this really a result of you and your DP mucking about? Come on, be honest. 😜

No more horse play for you then!

ciaopizza · 19/05/2024 21:45

I woke up with something very similar to this on my calf. Popped it (mistake) and now have a scar. It took ages to heal and the infection went down into my ankle. I think it was a spider as I didn't go to bed with it.

Could be a Blandford fly, they tend to blister.

I have had blisters just like this with Blandford Flies.

Twice I have ended up with cellulitis as a result - have never had it from horse flies or anything else bitey. Those Blandford flies are something else!

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 21:50

@Joolsin
For such tiny creatures it's amazing the damage that they can inflict x

I’d keep an eye on it. I think that when a horse fly bites, it can give you the infection at the time of the bite. So even if you don’t pierce it, it could still be infected. If that red area gets any bigger I’d go to GP for antibiotics. I had to have antibiotics for a horse fly bite a few years ago (UK).

I’ve also been bitten through clothes. Dh literally saw my bum being bitten through trousers and knickers. He tried to hit the insects but my bum was just too tasty and I got bitten a lot (abroad).

MaMisled · 19/05/2024 21:53

I had a bite EXACTLY like that 2 summers ago whilst wearing cuffed walking trousers. Both GP and Practice Nurse said False Widow Spider bite. 😲

Sonolanona · 19/05/2024 21:57

Blandford fly bites looks like that..and they are TINY flies so you have no idea til the blister and the itching and the swelling appears. I've been bitten this year (May/June is peak season)

This looks like a Blandford fly bite, there are a lot around this year..

chutneypig · 19/05/2024 22:06

For me, personally, I've had this on bites close to my ankles. In New Orleans, Rome and in the UK, so I've assumed not the same insect but more positional. Blister plasters were a huge help in resolving them.

Thecatspjymas · 19/05/2024 22:07

It is 100% a blandford fly bite - buggers get me every May!

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 22:12

I will investigate Blandford Flies 😬
Never heard of them before.
Could be spider, mosquito or horsefly.

No horseplay, unfortunately 😂

God, I have been wishing for summer to return for 8 months, and here it is....along with it's pests 🤪

Blandford flies result like that in me. They often leave blood dripping from the bite too. Normally need antibiotics. Last one I had, I was bitten on the ankle and swollen from my toes to my knee so much it felt like if you touched me too hard I'd explode.
Horseflies sometimes I react like that too, but they almost always clear themselves up without antibiotics.

IVFlife · 19/05/2024 22:16

No idea but hope it goes soon uuugh

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 19/05/2024 22:19

You poor thing.
It's amazing the amount of different reactions people have to different insects.
Tiny creatures cause so much damage. X

I got these last year in Croatia, think it was Mozzys. They eventually popped by themselves.
