Vinted item not as described - I have to pay return fee?!

UnderMyUmbrellaEllaEllaEllaEllaElla · 16/05/2024 17:48

I have received an order today and the item was listed as new without tags but is clearly used. I have proof as I have pictures against the same item that I have as new with tags.

The (rude) seller has agreed to a refund but it seems I have to pay for it. So I'm out of pocket as a direct result of her dishonesty.

This doesn't seem right?! Any way round it?!

@ForAPicnic

Because you would expect there to be some penalty - any penalty - on dishonest sellers. In the case of Vinted it seems to be 100% weighted in favour of sellers

Been burnt a few times on this which had made me stop buying on Vinted unless the photos and condition is crystal clear. I have no idea what the 'buyer protection fee' is for as it doesn't protect you from anything!

WaltzingWaters · 17/05/2024 12:55

It’s one of the reasons I’ve stopped buying on Vinted. Happy to take a risk with sizing etc, but when people can completely falsely advertise and face no consequences it really isn’t on.

mactire · 17/05/2024 12:59

I’m with you OP, this is why I prefer Depop. Seems much stronger on buyer rights.

I bought item of vinted but never arrived i checked and seller had been blocked by vinted, i sent lots of mesages to vinted to say id been scammed but they payed them my money even though they new they was scammers i lost £62 its a joke vinted wont refund me

Dav1000 · 22/06/2024 21:12

Vinted payed scamers my money even though they had blocked seller for scamming now they wont give me refund

firstcomeshappiness · 22/06/2024 21:21

I learnt this after my first purchase with Vinted. Fortunately it was an honest mistake and seller was genuine so I didn’t lose out but I’m not prepared to use it. Seller sent me wrong item by mistake, they said they would send me correct one and to keep the other. I asked Vinted for advice as they weren’t going to send the other until after payment would have been released and Vinted basically said the terms state I’m responsible for return costs unless seller offers to pay and sending it back was my only option.

As others have said, they could send you something completely obscure and you lose out entirely which isn’t worth the hassle. If posting back, I end up spending the cost of the item on getting it to me then sending it back

Someone bought an item from me then complained that it was pink rather than red (even though they could see 5 clear pictures of it before buying it). They raised an issue and returned it, you're not out of pocket because you get the money back from Vinted once the seller receives it back.

I agree op I sell many items and bought some which have been fab. Unfortunately I got item of clothing which was filthy. I always washed items before sending and now I had to pay to return it because a seller didn't have the decency to ensure she had washed it as seen in the photos.

Some people don't like Vinted sellers washing things because a stranger is buying it and they might have sensitives/ allergies to certain soap powders but the buyer should really say so and the seller should at least tell you if it has marks on it

Oblomov24 · 22/06/2024 21:36

Dh only used vinted once last month. He bought a lovely men's leather bag for travelling. Didn't arrive. Woman really rude. He asked her to contact the delivery company she refused. Never again.

This is one case where the buyer protection would apply. If there is no proof of delivery, he could have got a refund

ReallyNotTheBestDayEver · 23/06/2024 09:33

@Wills890 yes you are out of pocket as you have to fund the return postage yourself, unless the seller agrees (which is rare) regardless of if the seller is at fault to begin with

Amioutoftouch · 23/06/2024 11:24

I started using vinted last year and have sold loads on there, I've never had any issues.
I have bought items via Vinted twice and had issues both times.
The first I received a dress with a load of snags (not listed).
This time I purchased a dress, I paid £20 because I had the same dress last year in a different colour, so knew it would fit.
It was listed s new with tags. I opened it and it has a very strong washing powder smell.
It also has a load of black dots/marks under the mesh lining.

I emailed the seller and she said they weren't there when she posted it! They definitely were because the packaging was perfectly intact and I literally opened it, immediately saw the marks and emailed the seller the same day.

I've reported to Vinted and will be so annoyed if they side with her (it's a principle thing). I only buy new with tags for a reason.

mondaytosunday · 23/06/2024 13:00

My DD just started buying n Vinted. So far the items have been great and fit perfectl. But she won't spend more than what she is willing to lose (so far no more than £7 including shipping). And she asks for extra pics or measurements if needed
And so far sellers have been fine.

veganmayo · 23/06/2024 13:41

There is an option for the seller to pay for the return costs now. I had to return something for similar reasons this week and the seller paid (using yodel)

Runingoncaffeine · 24/02/2025 13:35

Sorry, I know this an incredibly dated thread but I’m in exactly the same position. I thought a hat that and it was described as beige, and light in pics but what I’ve received is a totally different colour hat. It counts as significantly not as described according to Vinted “SNAD” yet the buyer is refusing to cover the postage. They also accused me of putting a colour filter on the photos (lol). They are so rude, and I don’t feel I should have to pay for a refund and be out of pocket when the buyer was dishonest and posted an inaccurate listing.

pics for reference.

any advice?

Hi, I am the OP of this thread but have since had a name change (not because of this thread ha ha).

It is incredibly frustrating but you're very unlikely to get anywhere with Vinted. It's really put me off buying from it tbh.

Surely if you are shopping on vinted you are expecting and don't mind second hand?
I'm not comfortable with second hand clothes so wouldn't buy from a mainly second hand market place just in case.
Before any one has a go, part of my autism means clothing is sensory issue and there are some textures I can't have near my skin and often worn clothes change texture if they haven't been cared for well.

If I’m shopping on vinted and see an item listed as new with tags then I expect to get new with tags and would mind getting something second hand

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 24/02/2025 14:06

It's shit isn't it?

One of my first Vinted purchases was a dress. Description said Size 14 and it was listed as a 14.

When it arrived the label said it was a 12. The seller apologised and agreed to refund but not for the postage. I was gobsmaccked. I'd not realised this was the rules.

I'm now careful with what I buy, and never spend much money.

pwish · 24/02/2025 14:08

This has probably already been said, but the worst thing about it all is if you return you don't get to leave feedback, so they are likely doing it a lot, but you have no idea because their feedback only reflects the positive sales.

I once bought something that arrived completely damaged, it was so damaged it must have been before it was packed (the type of damage and ripping was clear), the seller was incredibly rude about the whole thing, so I kept the sale (approx £10) just so I could leave negative feedback. It was worth every penny to me ha, but it's a stupid system.

I love and looooooathe Vinted. I only use it for very low cost transactions now.

Appreciate you coming back and responding!

It has totally put me off purchasing from Vinted tbh. I feel as a consumer, you don’t really have any protections which goes against the grain. EBay on the other hand seems very different and usually will always side with and support buyers.

yes, that is awful! We should be able to feedback on what a terrible transaction it was. I’ve got a funny feeling the person I bought from is doing this as they were so quick to assume I was lying!!

what you did there has crossed my mind too, lol. I bet that felt so good. You’re not wrong to do it either as it is a caution to other buyers!
