Going On Holiday When Signed Off Sick

AIBU to book a holiday when signed off sick from work ?

Huge backstory, but basically off sick with work related stress. Doctors note in place for 4 weeks. Desperately need a change of scene and some sunshine. Haven’t been off work for nearly 7 years. Haven’t had a holiday in 9 years not that that’s relevant (feels very relevant).

Would this be unreasonable of me ?

It’s about not being available for sickness monitoring, occ health appts and calls with your manager. Nothing to do with having a life.

it’s generally those places with very generous sickness allowances (6 months full pay) that do it. For pretty obvious reasons.

never seen a tribunal raised about it. ACAS are clear that it can be holiday pay rather than sick pay.

I suppose my question is how would your employer know you’re on holiday?

I don’t post anything on social media so I live off the grid (in a 2024 sense!)

Woman from admin rang me when I was on holiday abroad, demanding where I was! She said "Well clearly you are out of the country because I can tell by the dial tone."
My holiday had been authorised by management so I was not impressed!

People will talk 100%, but there’s no rule to say you can’t, and it will do you good.

How can you know OP's employer has "no rule to say you can't"?

If they pay enhanced sick pay - i.e. not just SSP - they may well have several clauses around that, which may or may not preclude taking holidays.

Reminder to take a burner phone on holiday if I’m ever off sick 🤣🤣
