To hate my side profile/Hair

I saw a background picture of myself yesterday and god I hate my side profile.!
I should have had braces and hardly have a chin but to make matters worse the hair on the side of my head doesn't grow! It's been years, I've had blood tests.. all normal and back of head hair grows normally. I've been taking biotin for around 6 months and it seems to be making my hair thicker.
I get highlights every 12 weeks (I'm a natural dark blonde and) but she tends to only need to do the roots at the back, hardly any root regrowth at the sides.
I've tried clip in face framing hair extensions but they don't look right, really fake. I'm thinking of getting extensions just at the sides but I have heard they're really bad for your hair?
I can tuck it behind my ears or wear it up but I have a large scar on one side of my face from childhood so prefer to cover it.
Anyone else had a similar issue and fixed it?
Just to had I'm early 40s, I use Luseta Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner and a garnier hair mask once a week. I also use heat protector and blow dry instead of straighteners.

Nothing clinging to your hair is GOOD for your hair but they're not overly bad either. To be honest, with some tape ins at the side in your colour you wouldn't be looking at a lot of damage and it would absolutely improve the overall look.

Damage usually comes when the tension is too tight and pulls out too much hair over a long period of time. As long as the extensions are being adjusted according to the growth cycle of your hair and reapplied properly, you won't be looking at major damage from such a small area.

Have you tried Mielle rosemary and mint oil? I've had good results with it around my hairline and it's not hugely expensive, might be worth a try. Fwiw, I don't think it notices as much to others as it will to you, I don't think I'd have given it a thought if I hadn't been looking for it

wompwomp · 05/05/2024 13:49

I'm struggling to see the problem. In the first picture, what am I looking for?

FlakyPoet · 05/05/2024 13:52

In the second picture (where your face is visible), some of your hair is tucked behind your ear, so it’s impossible to tell if that area at the front looks different. I really can’t see what the problem is either.

The hair at the back of my head reaches the shoulder length, at the sides it barley reaches my chin.

It looks okay tucked behind my ears but you can't see it in the picture but I have a scar that I'd prefer to be covered.

Yeah I have, I didn't see a difference, maybe tape in extensions are the answer, I just wonder why it won't grow.

I don't see the issue, my hair is probably thinner and I am only a few years younger. You look perfectly fine to me x

I just thought that was how you’ve had it styled

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/05/2024 13:59

FlakyPoet · 05/05/2024 14:00

Yes I think you look perfectly fine too. I don’t get what you mean about your chin being too small either.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/05/2024 14:01

Also the reason you have less on the sides is because you have a fringe - you are probably comparing yourself to women who don't have a fringe cut in and add that volume to the sides instead.

FlakyPoet · 05/05/2024 14:14

I ended up feeling my own hair and the hair from the sideburns around to the top of my forehead is whispy and thin, but the back of my head it’s really thick. I never have given it much thought. Perhaps your desire to hide behind your hair is making you fixate on something fairly normal? Also, my hair does grow long enough for me to nearly sit on it, but it didn’t when I was younger- it seemed to just stop at a certain length just beyond my shoulders. Different people’s hair does different things. And one other thing. I actually dye someone else’s hair for them and you have to take into consideration that the ears leave a huge gap in the volume of hair on the sides and the hairline follows an angle from the forehead centre to the ears, so there is far less volume at the front.

I understand it is annoying that you’ve shared something that bothers you and I am essentially saying ‘that shouldn’t bother you’, so perhaps someone might come up with good tips for you. I think my hair may have started to grow longer after having kids - I can’t think what else it would be, so perhaps there is something hormonal? It’s a wild punt though.

A friend of mind discovered she had under active thyroid from her thinning.

ThewitchesofSussex · 05/05/2024 14:29

Thanks for the response, very old (around 15 years ago picture) to show how my hair used to be. Very thick all over! I had it cut short around 5 years ago not taking the curls in to consideration it was way too short and I had to start blow drying it straight and the sides just never came back as long or thick again.
I am blind on one side and have a droopy lid so have always covered it with a fringe, and I also have a scar on the side of my Face I prefer to cover with hair but the hair at the sides just doesn't look right.
I probably am obsessing after seeing that dreadful photo of myself this week.
It's just strange how it doesn't grow in the same way at the sides, I'm going to make an appointment to discuss tape in extensions I think.

My hair doesn't grow at the sides due to age/ thyroid. I have hair extensions (short because I have a bob) and they're such a confidence boost!! My extension lady says it's very common. Won't go back!

MotherOfCatBoy · 05/05/2024 14:42

OP the photo isn’t dreadful at all. I get that you want to make the most of yourself but you are not starting from a bad place - you look pretty in all the photos!
Do what you need with your hair, but please don’t think you look dreadful. That’s not the way to talk to yourself.

This is what I'm going to look into, how much was the initial cost and maintenance?

They're about 150 but they last a year. Then 50 every 8 weeks to get them refitted. Best money I spend!

I just have about 12 nano bead extensions on each side, nothing on the back. Cut into my own hair. Wouldn't be without now.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 06/05/2024 01:58

I have this, I think it grows sparser on my temples always has done. It bothers me from the side, but I don’t think anyone really notices. I understand the bother tho.

Bobloblaw84 · 06/05/2024 06:03

I really think this is a cutting/styling issue. You had full length hair in the older photo.

It might also be time to default to your natural hair colour if you want it to be as healthy as possible.
