To think I've been ignored on WhatsApp voice notes

beachwave · 02/05/2024 16:27

I was exchanging messages with a potential date yesterday evening and we also exchanged a voice note or two .
I sent him one this morning and there are two grey ticks ...
even if he has read receipts disabled etc , do voice notes notifications turn blue regardless?
Thanks

Voice notes are incredibly tedious. I’d ignore them too sorry.

beachwave · 02/05/2024 16:29
  • when they're read , I mean! Thanks

Thanks.
Lots of people enjoy them as a means of communication , however .

I have no idea about what the ticks mean but voice notes are a bit of a pain sometimes - surely messaging is easier and quicker during the day?

Marblessolveeverything · 02/05/2024 16:33

I ignore them. I can't listen to them other than on speaker so not private. Most people I know ignore them also or we ring and talk ,🤷‍♀️

Roryhon · 02/05/2024 16:34

I don’t always listen to voice notes if I’m not alone.

WomenLookingAtMenLookingAtWomen · 02/05/2024 16:34

I agree with @Comtesse -- I'm far less likely to listen to them than I am to a message. I have a friend, of whom I'm very fond, who communicates almost exclusively in them because she is always in her car or walking her dog, and I accept it because I value her, but it irritates me, and makes it difficult to flick back through a conversation to see the place/time we agreed to meet etc.

Yes, exactly this.

saraclara · 02/05/2024 16:37

Why, when someone asks for some practical information like 'on voicenotes, do the ticks turn blue when they've been listened to?' do they only get responses that say 'I hate voicenotes, I never listen to them'

I mean, why respond at all of you don't have the answer?

ETA I sent a voicenote today which the person replied to. But it still has two grey ticks.

EATA I don't use them at home as they've not really caught on with anyone I know. But I'm on holiday in a country where voice notes are the norm. Turns out WhatsApp methods are a cultural preference.

ProfessorFJLewisThatsYouThatIs · 02/05/2024 16:48

I hate voice notes as well - as PP said, you can't refer back to them easily; plus it's usually a given that the sender is going to ramble, as they've already decided that there are going to be far too many words for them to consider typing.

I wouldn't ignore them completely, but I might well wait until later before I listen to them and then forget, whereas a normal message is received and read almost straightaway.

People need to realise that they have sent a voice message, because it isn't convenient for them to send a normal message; so what's to say that it's convenient for the recipient to listen to a voice note?

It's even worse that a lot of people leave them on the fly and gabble, without really thinking properly in advance about what they want to say, so you're often having to listen several times to the same message, just to make head or tail of it. In a lot of cases, they're quite an indulgent means of communicating, where you're very much thinking about what suits you than what suits the other person.

Butchyrestingface · 02/05/2024 17:00

My heart sinks into my boots when someone announces over WA, "I've sent you a voice note cos it's too long/I can't be bothered to type."

Lazy arses.

As you were, OP. Grin

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 02/05/2024 17:04

To answer your actual question OP, the voice note will only turn to two blue ticks if he has read receipts on x

beachwave · 02/05/2024 17:17

Thanks 😊

I never listen to voice notes. Too tedious

theeyeofdoe · 02/05/2024 17:20

Me either - just type.

Temporaryanonymity · 02/05/2024 17:21

I stopped dating someone because he sent voice notes.

Not necessarily. OP is wondering why her voice notes haven't been actively received - and the answer could be technical, or, considering how many people hate them, it could have been that he said "Stuff that for a game of soldiers" and ignored it.

Then again, OP did say that they had already exchanged voice notes, so he's a bit of a hypocrite if he has sent them too. Plus, I suppose you'd be a lot keener to hear the voice of somebody you (might) fancy than you would Uncle Clarence telling you (in tedious detail) that he's just stopped off at Wetherby Services for a break and a meal and should still be at yours by 4 o'clock - as he'd already told you he would 9 times.

shams05 · 02/05/2024 17:46

Maybe they've not had a chance to listen to them.
Lots of people including myself find voice notes really inconvenient.

bloodyplumbing · 02/05/2024 18:07

@ProfessorFJLewisThatsYouThatIs OP was asking about ticks? Not if the voice note was actively received.

A lot of PPs can't read the thread.

OP I think the ticks can be disabled, so not sure you can tell.

Apologies, I stand corrected.

But even so, it still doesn't tell you whether it's been listened to or not - in the same way as a short actual message that showed two blue ticks could be assumed to have been delivered AND read.

The title of the thread is 'AIBU to think I've been ignored', which rather suggests that her concerns aren't purely technical.

beachwave · 02/05/2024 18:22

All other voice notes that have been read have a blue microphone icon. His has just two grey ticks.
There seems to be all conflicting information about it on Google. Some say even if you've read receipts disabled , t doesn't apply to voice notes or group chats and they come up as that blue icon. That has been my experience

AngelinaFibres · 02/05/2024 19:27

Has he listened to them and decided that your accent is not something he likes. That's why he hasn't replied

beachwave · 02/05/2024 19:29

Maybe... I hope not!

PoopingAllTheWay · 02/05/2024 19:30

No matter what people post these days,
People always have something negative to say
The poster did not ask if you like them, they asked about the ticks
So if you don't know, just scroll on
and get over yourself while your there
