Inspired by the poster who is wondering if talking to your cat means you are old.

surely everyone talks to their pets?

I have had quite long chats with cats over the years…mostly about food to be fair.

and dogs are excellent listeners.

Our dog has her own ‘voice’ and I regularly have conversations with her. I do get odd look’s though.

TeenLifeMum · 28/04/2024 22:27

Oh dog is very passive aggressive, sarcastic and needy when he speaks through any of the family. Can’t imagine not speaking to our pets.

HerBigChance · 28/04/2024 22:28

I chat to other people's pets, particularly random ones I meet along the street.

It's great.

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/04/2024 22:29

I talk to my dog all the time. I even make up songs for her.

The people who have pets, and don't talk to them... they are the weird ones.

Lou16777 · 28/04/2024 22:30

I couldnt imagine not speaking to my dog! He is another member of the family, we all constantly talk to him haha. And like others said, I talk to other people's pets

FangsForTheMemory · 28/04/2024 22:32

I talk to my cat nonstop, mostly complaining to him or telling him off for getting underfoot!

HollyCanDoAnything · 28/04/2024 22:32

I think there are some who don't do that. They're the ones that give you a slightly funny look when they overhear you chatting to yours. Like you are the weird one!!!

PoochiesPinkEars · 28/04/2024 22:32

My dh who is not known for his willing use of verbal communication talks to our animals including the chickens. 🤣
It goes without saying that I do. But then I talk to the car too.

BirthdayRainbow · 28/04/2024 22:33

No. Can't compute the question.

I have a dog, three cats and a fish. Talk to all of them though admittedly less to the fish.

HollyCanDoAnything · 28/04/2024 22:33

Are any of you sometimes accused of talking more to the dog than to the husband? Hope it's not just me.

sparklychair · 28/04/2024 22:34

I used to talk to my tortoise, and make remarks to spiders, woodlice etc as I expel them from the house. The latter never reply, however.

I go for a walk after work around my neighbourhood. There are a number of cats I know by name and stop to talk to, like a normal person.

PandorasBoxers · 28/04/2024 22:36

My dogs a Spanish rescue and to hear her tell it everything was better in Spain… when I eat my dinner she tells me that was her exact favourite meal in Spain!
so to answer your question I do speak to her but she speaks back

MagentaRocks · 28/04/2024 22:36

Yep, talk to my dogs. If DH takes them to the woods I always ask them if they have had a nice time when they get back. I talk to them throughout the day too, they seem to like it.

Ha, sometimes I narrowly avoid walking into a big web in my garden. I then have to tell the spider what a big fucker they are.

I also love stopping to watch crows when out on a walk, and tell them how handsome they all are.

Same here! It adds to the general gaiety of things, I think.

Cat in my case but otherwise, snap

StarDolphins · 28/04/2024 22:39

I talk to my dog all day long, he knows a lot of what I’m saying (tea time, let’s go, would you like a cuddle/kiss🤣) I thought everyone talks to their pets!

Alrhough I do think it’s the tone of our voice as if I said ‘nobody likes you, you’re so god damn smelly’ In my usual high pitched ‘i love my dog voice’, he’d come running over with his tail wagging like he’s getting a treat!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/04/2024 22:39

We all chat to the cat in this house. We all make up songs about her and DD reads to her. She’s a good listener (when she’s fed 😂).

CrushingOnRubies · 28/04/2024 22:40

Of course I talk to the dog

She likes watching tv so quite often chat about what's happening .

She also has views about current affairs. She grunts and groans when politicians are interviewed

As well as daily chit chat

ilovesooty · 28/04/2024 22:40

I talk to my two cats. I say goodnight to them when I switch off the bedroom light too.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/04/2024 22:41

And she actually does talk back to us sometimes. She also knows certain words like (her name) food or (her name) out and others if we trying to work out what she wants

CountingCrones · 28/04/2024 22:42

Chick, I talk to the kettle. I tell the oven timer to stop nagging me.

I definitely talk to anything actually alive, whether my pet or not.

Clickncollect · 28/04/2024 22:46

Councidentally I was pondering a similar question on a run around my local country park today. I was struck by the amount of dog walkers with headphones in / on phone calls / checking their phone etc and I wondered if people talk to their dogs whilst on a walk. No judgement, I don’t actually have any pets myself!
However, I do know some local dogs and cats by name and stop for a chat when appropriate.

My dog is usually ahead of me checking her own pee-mails. I only talk to her on a walk when recalling her... and for some reason I tell her she is a good girl when she has a dump!
