Are there people who don’t talk to their pets?

Inspired by the poster who is wondering if talking to your cat means you are old.

surely everyone talks to their pets?

I have had quite long chats with cats over the years…mostly about food to be fair.

and dogs are excellent listeners.

My old cat would say mama to me

Once I was struggling to get him in the carrier for the vet, I sat on the floor and said "I'm just trying to get you better"
He walked straight in Confused

There are some fucking weirdos out there. Who the hell doesn’t speak to members of their family!

I have my guinea pig ‘voice’, we communicate in a special guinea guinea way. They particularly appreciate my views on vegetables and my offers of dandinglions (it’s our pet name for our favourite treat).

Of course! One of my dogs has the absolute best head tilts and listens intently to everything I say. He understands a lot of words and when we started spelling certain words so he couldn't understand them, he now knows the spelled out versions too 😂

Mine too. We started having to spell bonio, then tried B, then had to try the letter before C, then the letter after A then we gave up! She can also count to three and knows her left and her right. She can tell when I'm planning on heading for home on our walk by the back of my head 😲

With the right kind of baby talk I can get my cats purring without even touching them.

And they have a range of different chirps to say 'food', 'play' and 'out'. (Also 'If you don't stop that I'm going to bite you')

My dogs a Spanish rescue and to hear her tell it everything was better in Spain… when I eat my dinner she tells me that was her exact favourite meal in Spain!
so to answer your question I do speak to her but she speaks back

My cat is Spanish😁

Amazing 😂 I've taught mine left and right too, and he can also count. Dogs are amazing

We had a cat who was obsessed with certain cat treats. He would come running if he heard the word ‘snacks’, which was useful if we wanted him to come home. We had to spell it out, s-n-a-c-k-s, if we needed to discuss them, but then he became on high alert for the ‘s’. He went missing once, and when we got a call from some people who thought they’d found him, we asked them to say the magic word to check it was him!

Gettingbysomehow · 01/05/2024 10:25

I talk to the cats and the indoor plants. I am begging my mandrake not to die and I've promised I'll do better but its touch and go.

Catsmere · 01/05/2024 10:47

Good luck @Gettingbysomehow!

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 01/05/2024 10:48

I mean, I talk to my snakes and they can't even hear me. But they sit there looking attentive and flicking their tongues, and they definitely prefer me over other humans, so I'm convinced there's something in it. I'd be suspicious of anyone who didn't at least say hello to their pets on seeing them.

Freefree · 01/05/2024 10:53

My mum who has never liked or been interested in animals always has a chat with our cat when she comes over.
She's usually just telling him not to get too close to her but sometimes I'll hear her asking him what he had for dinner or if he's had a good day 😀

Catsmere · 01/05/2024 10:59

I can't imagine not talking to my two when I get home - as soon as they hear the door they're on the spot!

MrMrsMoon · 01/05/2024 11:00

I chat to mine but i don't go for two sided conversations when i speak for them. I do try to 'listen' to their body language though. Would not dream of shutting them away for the night without saying goodnight, etc.

I talk to my dog all the time. I even make up songs for her.

The people who have pets, and don't talk to them... they are the weird ones.

Same ha ha! She's not howled so I think she's happy with my musical efforts.

henlake7 · 01/05/2024 11:14

I suppose it depends on the pet....I had a fishtank years ago and I dont remember talking to the fish much!

But I talk to the dogs all the time....even the completely deaf 16 year old!!LOL

longtompot · 01/05/2024 13:43

@YeOldeGreyhound Pee-mails! Love it😅

I talk to my dog all the time. Sadly, she is going deaf so can't hear me as much. But she has a voice we give her and she doesn't half like answering back. Especially when we don't believe her about non existent people at the front door.
It does make me sad when people walk with their headphones in whilst walking their dog @Clickncollect I talk to her when we are walking too. Tbh I don't hear other people doing that with their dogs, but then again I don't talk to her when other people are near so maybe the do the same.

mydogisthebest · 01/05/2024 14:20

My neighbour had a dog (he died at the end of last year) and it spent a lot of time shut out in the garden. It annoyed me because he was a small lap dog breed not really meant to be outside in rain, snow or heat plus he barked all the time to go inside.

So I already did not have a good impression of neighbour and then one day I was cleaning upstairs window and saw her come back from somewhere and walk up the garden path. The dog went running towards her wagging his tail and she just walked past him not stroking him or speaking to him. That put me off her totally!

She was always posting on facebook how much she adored him (yeah right).

I always chat away to my dog and don't even care if anyone hears. One person said my sentences were too long for my dog to understand. My dog then did exactly what I'd said to...

Disturbia81 · 01/05/2024 15:15

I do but not like long conversations, more like "hey cheeky where's your sister" "ooh look at that bird" etc

purpleme12 · 01/05/2024 15:23

Course everyone talks to their pets
