To still be wearing Impulse body spray

Started wearing it as a teen, as an underarm deodorant (I do one spray for each armpit, I’m not dousing myself in the stuff). Have just stuck with it and never really thought about it until recently. At a certain point there were news stories about antiperspirants potentially being carcinogenic (Impulse isn’t an antiperspirant), so I guess that discouraged me from switching. I did actually try a couple of natural deodorants recently, one with baking soda and one without, but they both gave me quite bad underarm rashes.

When I googled ‘Mumsnet’ and ‘Impulse’ just now a forest of posts came up talking about how vile cheap and sweet-stinky it is! I know some of them can be but I honestly don’t think the one I use is bad. However it did make me think that perhaps it’s weird to have stuck with it past my teenage years. I also honestly don’t know if it potentially has carcinogenic or unsafe qualities. I try not to spray it on newly broken skin but I will sometimes put it on the day after I have shaved my armpits, when it still stings a bit, so maybe there are risks of it going into the bloodstream?

Would love recommendations for things that are more ‘grownup’ and maybe a bit more subtle in smell, but also aren’t reputed carcinogenic or otherwise harmful, and also aren’t Native or Tom of Maine ‘natural’ ones given that both of those (even without baking soda) gave me severe underarm rashes. It seems quite hard to find something good! What do adult women use?!

I really hate Impulse, sorry OP. I do think it's sickly smelling.

I use sure roll on under my arms (if I wear deodorant, which is not every day) and then just perfume, if I can be bothered.

But if you like impulse, just keep wearing it.

hamsterchump · 27/04/2024 15:01

Why change if you like it? I just picked up an Impulse spray from the supermarket for £1 as I've run out of perfume and to be honest I love it, it's a lovely, nostalgic smell and doesn't break the bank. Perfume is all marketing anyway. Don't worry so much about what others think OP.

Overtheatlantic · 27/04/2024 15:05

You could try using an unscented deodorant and then wearing a light perfume. There are some lovely affordable ones at Primark and Aldi.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 27/04/2024 15:05

I think you're very lucky to be able to just wear Impulse, as as you have said it isn't an antiperspirant! I know about 10% of people sweat with no smell, and you're clearly one of the lucky few 😁 I think the only reason Impulse is out of fashion with those that used to wear it in the 90s is that we were teenagers then, and needed proper antiperspirant once we got a few years older. I'd love to still wear it if I could, I think the fragrances are nice.

serialbullshitter · 27/04/2024 15:05

I use it too, but only the musk one, I am 54😂

HesterPrincess · 27/04/2024 15:09

I have awful memories of Impulse - as I used to work with some HCP's who smoked and then doused themselves in it before coming back inside. Just the smell makes me heave.

Blackcats7 · 27/04/2024 15:12

I didn’t know it still existed so thank you for a bit of nostalgia. We all used it back in the eighties.
I like sanex sensitive roll on because it suits my skin and isn’t strong smelling so I then add perfume if I fancy it.

FionnulaTheCooler · 27/04/2024 15:14

They have brought back some of the 90s Impulse sprays like O2. If I didn't have a teenage DD to buy them for I might have been very tempted to buy them for myself. I would use them in addition to a proper antiperspirant though.

Youdontevengohere · 27/04/2024 15:17

My 10 year old loves Impulse 😁. If you like it then keep using it OP. You must be lucky enough to not sweat too much though, if I exercised with just Impulse I’d be dripping in sweat and stinking!

I wish they'd bring back Zen. I loved that scent!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 27/04/2024 15:49

As long as it's Musk I don't see a problem at all 😝
I have it too and it's a guilty pleasure that takes me back to the mid 80's and my teenage years

Crunchymum · 27/04/2024 15:59

I have a bottle of Tease.

The only perfume I wear, costs £100 so I tend to use something cheaper for everyday use (I like the body mist from Rituals which is about £20) but I also use Impulse Tease - £1 a can!!

Thepeopleversuswork · 27/04/2024 16:02

I personally find the smell makes me feel nauseous: it’s far too sweet and it triggers memories of horrible teenage attempts to be sophisticated. But knock yourself out: it’s a free country and it’s no worse than most aftershave.

olympicsrock · 27/04/2024 16:27

I use dove cream antiperspirant - no fragrance . I then choose a perfume that I like

bluetopazlove · 27/04/2024 16:49

Meh I don't know anyone who continued beyond teenage use .Used it in the 80s and kind of grew up and matured .

kitsuneghost · 27/04/2024 16:54

I love a bit of impulse. Wear it at festivals a lot because you can't have perfume.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 27/04/2024 17:05

Impulse O2 (the green one) has been on sale again of late and o adore that one ... Gorgeous and fresh. I have stoked up and douse myself in the stuff for the gym!!

TwilightSkies · 27/04/2024 17:09

Yes O2 and Air are back! So good!
Zen was the best though.
I don’t care what people think 😂
You should be using an anti-perspirant though.

PassingStranger · 27/04/2024 17:27

Nothing wrong with it. Its stood the sense of time.

nonevernotever · 27/04/2024 17:30

I like wild deodorant.

doneandone · 27/04/2024 17:30

Ted Baker body sprays are lovely. I bought the discover trio from M&S today too which all smell divine

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 27/04/2024 17:56

I also have Ted Baker sprays as a small bottle of the purple one lasts for ages and only a few euro. Spray over my clothes before go out and on my coat. Mitchum roll on deodorant is great and lasts forever and does not give a rash and dries quickly.

SpeculatingRooks · 27/04/2024 17:59

Oh my goodness does anyone remember the advert..."when a man you've never met before gives you flowers..."
Can't believe that was a real advert when I think about it now!
