To still be wearing Impulse body spray

Started wearing it as a teen, as an underarm deodorant (I do one spray for each armpit, I’m not dousing myself in the stuff). Have just stuck with it and never really thought about it until recently. At a certain point there were news stories about antiperspirants potentially being carcinogenic (Impulse isn’t an antiperspirant), so I guess that discouraged me from switching. I did actually try a couple of natural deodorants recently, one with baking soda and one without, but they both gave me quite bad underarm rashes.

When I googled ‘Mumsnet’ and ‘Impulse’ just now a forest of posts came up talking about how vile cheap and sweet-stinky it is! I know some of them can be but I honestly don’t think the one I use is bad. However it did make me think that perhaps it’s weird to have stuck with it past my teenage years. I also honestly don’t know if it potentially has carcinogenic or unsafe qualities. I try not to spray it on newly broken skin but I will sometimes put it on the day after I have shaved my armpits, when it still stings a bit, so maybe there are risks of it going into the bloodstream?

Would love recommendations for things that are more ‘grownup’ and maybe a bit more subtle in smell, but also aren’t reputed carcinogenic or otherwise harmful, and also aren’t Native or Tom of Maine ‘natural’ ones given that both of those (even without baking soda) gave me severe underarm rashes. It seems quite hard to find something good! What do adult women use?!

Omg you can get O2 again?!!!! I loved that in the 90s!!! Where can I get it?!!!!

Perfume is certainly not all marketing. The sky high prices are of course in part marketing but high quality perfumes are balanced and contain natural essences that have been distilled. Cheap fragrances are predominantly synthetic and can give many people bad reactions.

In fairness no cheap body spray has ever made me feel as migrainous and nauseated as Tom Ford Black Orchid does. Or indeed any of the classic aldehyde heavy Chanels.

Me too. Works really well for me. Like the Night Tales and Coconut Milk fragrances. They are really subtle as you say. And also use nice body lotion to generally smell nice.

For going out I love Gucci Bloom and all the Flora fragrances.

Savers chemist! They do the Air one too.

I love impulse and keep a few bottles of my favourite in my bottom drawer Grin. I managed to get hold of 'vanilla kisses' on eBay, apparently they still sell it in Germany so it's all in foreign writing but that's not an issue - it smells amazing!

kittycloud · 28/04/2024 15:37

I also loved 'zen', which smelt of cucumber and freshness, soooooo good!

Crazycrazylady · 28/04/2024 16:35

I'm sorry op but imo it just ends up of the person smelling of weird sweet smelling sweat.

I think the vast majority of adults need much more than impulse.

Goodness I had no idea it was still going! So popular when I was a teen. Not sure if it's like Lynx though - which IMO shouldn't be worn by anyone over 15. Horrible stuff.

I give the lynx pride range very good -unisex. And occasionally impulse
Biut only use a roll on under arms not spray. Spray is just for scent afterwards and maybe keep skin dryer?

I picked up the 02 impulse in Tesco the other day.

If you are using Impulse alone without a proper deodorant, then I'm afraid you will stink unless you are biologically abnormal. Impulse is simply a perfumed spray, it has neither deodorising nor anti perspirant properties. Please use a proper deodorant. Of course, also spray with Impulse if you like the smell. But Impulse does not minimise or even mask the stench of BO.

Some of us don’t sweat much or smell of BO much luckily.

I’ve been lucky since I was late 30s that I haven’t needed to use deodorant or anti perspirant and if I did use something it was a Weleda spray on. Years ago when I was younger I did like Toms of Maine too.

When I was younger in my 20s there was a spray that was both anti perspirant and deodorant and came in a pink scent and a “blue” or unscented scent. When a friend of mine’s boyfriend stayed over and forgot his spray I offered him this and he really liked it as it worked but wasn’t girly (he was a builder).

The only time I do use something now is after exercising as stale sweat does smell but I also wash where I sweat too.

If I do go to the odd festival (rare these days) then I take a body spray, normally a Nuxe one or a Brazilian Bum Bum one (Sol de Janeiro).

I used to love a body spray called Limara, I remember loving the advert “I’m going to make you remember my name! Limara! Sung in a screaming voice, I received loads of compliments wearing it, happy teenage days.

Everyone who has ever told me they don't sweat much or smell of BO has absolutely stunk of BO - they just don't realise it.

Wearing a deodorant is essential if you don't want to smell. Don't kid yourself that you're somehow different and don't smell, I can assure you that if you're not wearing deodorant you do smell. You may not be able to smell it, but others can!

ViDe24 · 10/05/2024 11:27

Personally, I use the Carr Greens deodorant, though natural deodorants take time to get used to. Do you suffer from eczema? That could also be why you had a flare-up using Native.

MidnightMeltdown · 10/05/2024 11:53

I haven't used impulse since the 90s. Didn't know it still existed!

I don't really see the point in it if it isn't antiperspirant. You're basically just using it as a perfume. For this purpose I would use actual perfume or a scented body cream.

longtompot · 10/05/2024 13:41

I used to love Impulse body sprays, especially Hint of Musk. Not worn them for years but might have a look at some of the fresher ones for hot days when I don't want to wear perfume.

A lot of people are saying they aren't deodorants, but some of them are sold as a deodorant spray. They aren't antiperspirants though. I wish I was able to get away with wearing them & not deodorant antiperspirants but never could.

Impulse sprays

It’s a body spray not an antiperspirant. I see no problem with wearing it, but it’s for spraying on your body not underarms. I’d be stinking if i only used a body spray
