AIBU to think I haven’t flown much

I had a rather odd discussion yesterday about travel with a friend and have been left feeling a little glum. They travel everywhere and seem to think that I travel less than the average Brit, which I always thought wasn’t true.

they are a bit up themselves I must admit!

I’ve just turned 29 and having given it some thought, I have been on 91 flights in my life time (counting one trip as two flights - outward and return). Mostly in Europe but several in Africa and the USA.

I can’t seem to work out we’re they joking or being serious when they said I need to get out more.

were they right? Is it unusual not to have flown much by my age (29)?

What a strange conversation and AIBU. I’m not sure how you’ve managed to remember that you’ve taken 91 flights but you sound well travelled. Does it matter? Maybe they were being sarcastic.

AmiShitsaline · 25/04/2024 16:59

That’s ridiculous

0verandoveragain · 25/04/2024 16:59

What a weird post

Love51 · 25/04/2024 16:59

That's around 3 flights a year. If you did them all before the age of 5 you might not consider yourself particularly well travelled but if you were old enough to remember them you really are.
Unless they were all to the same place I suppose.
I lived abroad briefly as a young adult but in the last 15 years have only flown 6 times. A year ago it was 2 so at that point I was not feeling well travelled!

TwelveAngryWhiskers · 25/04/2024 16:59

Is it a competition to see who has the largest carbon footprint? What an odd thing to get worked up about.

Ariela · 25/04/2024 17:00

My eldest is 25 and only been on 4 planes.
I'm 63 and only flown about 20 trips, more than half of which where in the course of my job(s).

I think you'll find that average person has flown a lot less than you.

Needmorelego · 25/04/2024 17:00

I have flown 6 times (3 holidays there and back).
I have been on a ferry 4 times (2 day trips there and back).
The last time I did either of those was in 1999.
I wouldn't say 91 flights is a small amount in the slightest 😂

ClairemacL · 25/04/2024 17:00

Well done on the stealth brag.

nearlymrs · 25/04/2024 17:01

Surely 91 is loads?! Can't work out if this is some sort of odd boast?

TulipTuesday · 25/04/2024 17:02

I’m 44 and haven’t flown anywhere 🤷🏻‍♀️

onemoremile · 25/04/2024 17:02

That's about three times as many flights as me and I'm twice your age so you may not be well travelled but you have plenty of air miles.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/04/2024 17:02

45 holidays.
Thats an average of 1.5 per year.

That will be a lot higher than average.

Needmorelego · 25/04/2024 17:03

@Florraine how many times have your "well travelled" friends been on a local service bus in the UK?
It's amazing how many people have travelled all over the world but wouldn't have a clue how to get from their own town centre to the big Tesco!!

PangolinPan · 25/04/2024 17:04

I think this says a lot more about you and your friend than you realise. I work with disadvantaged people who haven't even been into the centre of our city as the bus is too expensive (£4) let alone flown anywhere! Couldn't get worked up about this. Just "that's nice dear" and move on.

Wishimaywishimight · 25/04/2024 17:04

I presume they were being sarcastic / joking!

Do you honestly think 91 flights (regardless of age) is not much?

Curious as to how you know the exact number, do you keep a record?

Comedycook · 25/04/2024 17:05

That seems a lot to me.

Now I'm trying to work out how many flights I've been on in my life...hmmm

idontlikealdi · 25/04/2024 17:05

How bizarre. How did you get 91 anyway, did you not fly home from somewhere?

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/04/2024 17:06

Of course 91 flights is a lot. That's about three a year.

DH didn't go on a plane until he was 36. He's 40 now and that was still the only time he's flown.

YABVU.

iamrageohtheresakitty · 25/04/2024 17:07

Were you born in a different country? Is that why there are an odd number? Or did you fly somewhere and get a different form of transport back?

Doesn't remotely answer your question, I'm just curious.

Florraine · 25/04/2024 17:10

Ah wow, interesting responses.

That odd one is when I flew to Dublin and got the ferry back.

Thank you! I really needed to know 😂

iamrageohtheresakitty · 25/04/2024 17:13

And I think that's a lot of flights!

hourstokill · 25/04/2024 17:15

im 57... i have absolutely no idea how many flights i have taken over the years and really its not something i am going to lose some sleep over?

what an odd thought process

MorvernBlack · 25/04/2024 17:16

I've flown twice in my life, but consider myself quite well travelled 🤷‍♀️

Comedycook · 25/04/2024 17:16

Just did a count up...I think only about thirty in my lifetime...I'm 42...but I didn't go on a plane until I was 11...and as an adult I had about ten years where I didn't go abroad
