AIBU to think I haven’t flown much

I had a rather odd discussion yesterday about travel with a friend and have been left feeling a little glum. They travel everywhere and seem to think that I travel less than the average Brit, which I always thought wasn’t true.

they are a bit up themselves I must admit!

I’ve just turned 29 and having given it some thought, I have been on 91 flights in my life time (counting one trip as two flights - outward and return). Mostly in Europe but several in Africa and the USA.

I can’t seem to work out we’re they joking or being serious when they said I need to get out more.

were they right? Is it unusual not to have flown much by my age (29)?

I don’t know what the average is, but I’d think you are at least that. Not that it matters either way.

Most of the people your age I know would be urging you to take fewer flights.

Maybe, but that doesn’t stop significant numbers of youngsters trooping through airport terminals enroute to a long haul flight to engage some school sponsored humanitarian project in perhaps Africa or Asia (seen a lot in summer) or a school ski trip (time as year as appropriate).

I’d say I’ve taken an average of two flights a year so slightly below you OP. I generally take slightly more now but took fewer when I was saving for a deposit. I’d say you are on the higher side of average for someone living with disposable income (ie not too low paid/benefits with no spare money each month).

@thisfilmisboring123 i am not sure what you are referring to. I don’t think that poster would have much luck in stopping people flying abroad for leisure - the airport was really busy last time I was there and I didn’t see signs of demand slowing down.

I don’t get though, given that there are THOUSANDS of flights PER DAY, the difference that one extra person goes on a seat that would have been empty - whether or not they have done this 91 times.

every year there are millions of flights.

It's not one person though, it takes collective action to reduce it. No one person can make difference, but if we all start flying less, then there will be less planes in the sky every day.

To answer your initial question, I'm 41 and have probably flown about 20 times. Not for any environmental reasons, just not been abroad that much. Although a few of them have been to Australia, so probably count for about 10 flights to Dublin!
