Let's settle it once for all: How many adults can big chicken feed?

I am talking about chicken as main protein in a dish in normal 1 to 2 course eating. Not 8 course meal.

My guess when cooking would be 1/4 chicken per adult so four people.
2 x breast and wing
2 x leg quarters

Person in my family suggests 10 easily:
2 x wings
4 x white
2 x drumsticks
2 x tighs.

AIBU chicken can easily feed 10.
AINBU ten people will be very polite and say nothing but stay hungry. Share among 4.

5 and a dog here
4 portions for main meal
1 portion leftovers (possibly two if it was really on the large side)
All the scrappy bits for the dog

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 22/04/2024 07:43

I buy 2 large chickens to feed 6 (plus cat). I do have enough left for a risotto after. But would not feed 6 out of 1 chicken (might scrape 5).

WhingeInTheWillows · 22/04/2024 07:43

I do 1 chicken for 3 adults. I find 1 is not quite enough for 4 people.

Booksoverbros · 22/04/2024 07:45

3-4 people at most if serving it roast style or as main protein with salad or veg.

A whole chicken breast each is really not a large amount for an adult.

Ifailed · 22/04/2024 07:45

4 adults plus one risotto made from scraps and stock from carcass.

WelshTattySlippers · 22/04/2024 07:49

An extra large chicken - 4 adults, 1x7 year old, 2 toddlers, the bits nobody wants for the dog and a chicken curry tomorrow.

Talipesmum · 22/04/2024 07:49

I buy as large a nice chicken as I can get - usually aiming for 2kg. As the main protein it will do 4 of us (hungry eaters) and there’s usually a little bit left over but not always. I might stretch it to 6 with extra veggies and roast potatoes but only if I knew the extra people had small appetites.

thanKyouaIMee · 22/04/2024 07:49

1 chicken for 3-4 adults, depending who likes what. I had to do 2 chickens for 4 adults recently as we all only wanted white meat 😂

5YearsLeft · 22/04/2024 07:49

I mean, there’s no way “person in [your] family” can be right. They’re indicating that TWO of the adults will only eat one wing each? Wtf? Has anyone witnessed an adult, neither underweight nor dieting, do this in the situation OP has described? I haven’t.

ringoffiire · 22/04/2024 07:50

One chicken cannot feed 10 people. That's mad. 5-6 absolute maximum.

Dearg · 22/04/2024 07:51

Well, depends on how big a chicken it actually is. We had an M&S already-in-a-bag one this weekend. Says it serves 3-4. 2 Adults here with normal appetites, we ate a little over half ( both leg quarters and some breast.)

We will have risotto or noodles tonight, and the rest of the meat is the dogs’ share ( 2 dogs ) .

Ratfan24 · 22/04/2024 07:51

If you want to stretch it I would say it can go a much further if you add a lot of cheap filling sides; stuffing, roast potatoes, Yorkshire and veg. I would say 8 portions. Then a second meal for 4 made from scraps and the bones for stock and again some cheaper ingredients e.g. Risotto or a pie. Nowadays chicken itself is fairly cheap so most people wouldn't do this, plus we are used to big servings of meat from a chicken.

Jk987 · 22/04/2024 07:52

A leg is a portion. All the white breast meat is easily enough for 4. So one chicken is minimum 6 people.

Plenty of veg, potatoes and stuffing will ensure no hunger. Not endless meat.

BoobyDazzler · 22/04/2024 07:52

Depends what with - as part of a roast I could probably stretch to 5, with a salad,3.

ringoffiire · 22/04/2024 07:52

...So two people are going to have just one chicken wing each??

Gorgonemilezola · 22/04/2024 07:53

We had roast chicken for supper yesterday - not sure if it was a large one, but 2 of us ate quite a bit less than half. I'm having 1 leg and wing meat for lunch today with salad and we're having chicken caesar for supper so that's 5 servings, and we won't eat it all so I'd guess 6 servings plus stock.

I found out over the weekend that HALF a chicken breast is considered a portion! I was both shocked and dubious, but google never lies right!? apparently a whole chicken breast is almost 50g of protein and that's why?

If it were true, then surely supermarkets would split the breasts in half and sell them like that good way to make more profit

BarrelOfOtters · 22/04/2024 07:55

2 nice, organic free range) large chickens for 6, gives us enough for decent leftovers for 2 (one stir fry and some sandwiches and a bit more) and the dog. And I do make soup with the bones.

2 coop normal chickens feeds 6 and leftovers for some sandwiches. (And soup, but the stock isn’t as nice).

kelsaycobbles · 22/04/2024 07:55

Delila smith describes how to cut into 6 portions from memory

BMW6 · 22/04/2024 07:56

No sane and reasonable person would serve a single chicken wing to anyone and consider that an adequate portion.

Bearbookagainandagain · 22/04/2024 07:57

I would do 1 for 4-5, and there is usually leftovers for a soup or sandwich

Petrine · 22/04/2024 07:58

Three adults and one dog

Catza · 22/04/2024 07:58

It would depend on what you are cooking and whom you are feeding. One large chicken can feed 10 people as per your family member's calculation if at least 6 of those are a mixture of children and small people (I wanted to say women, but I remembered that my lanky ex used to eat child portions). We share a large chicken between 4 adults, 3 of which are male ranging from 80 to 100kg with massive appetites. We have a little bit left over for sandwiches the next day. So, I would say 5 people with healthy appetites per chicken.
However, if you consider the fact that you can make a stew out of the chicken instead of roasting it, or you can use bones with leftover meat to make soup, then the number of people fed grows exponentially.

A chicken has 2 breasts, a breast is a portion. How are you getting 4 out of the breast meat?

They already do. The size of a breast from a whole chicken is much bigger than supermarkets one.
