Let's settle it once for all: How many adults can big chicken feed?

I am talking about chicken as main protein in a dish in normal 1 to 2 course eating. Not 8 course meal.

My guess when cooking would be 1/4 chicken per adult so four people.
2 x breast and wing
2 x leg quarters

Person in my family suggests 10 easily:
2 x wings
4 x white
2 x drumsticks
2 x tighs.

AIBU chicken can easily feed 10.
AINBU ten people will be very polite and say nothing but stay hungry. Share among 4.

While your reasoning seems sound overall, I'd expect that the meat:bone ratio will increase with the size of the chicken - so a 2kg chicken will have a higher proportion of meat than a 1.5kg chicken.

I did check the wider internet and got a 1:3 one part bone to three part chicken ratio (I’m not feeling well enough to do the full math, but there are pages that tell you the exact percentage of bone in each part of the chicken), and 25-30% water loss. So I see how her chicken came out 800g from 1.5kg. But you could also use 1:3 for bones, you’d get 25% bone, say 25% water, and you still get 1kg from a 2kg chicken. BUT if someone did the math based on the bone percentages of each part of the chicken, might be totally different. The real question is…

Wasn’t the REAL big chicken the friends we made along the way?

tastydiner · 22/04/2024 11:13

Large Tesco chicken does 4 of us here. May be a little left over for including in a stir fry the next day but not often.

gettingolderbutcooler · 22/04/2024 11:14

4!
And soup the next day. Yum.

ElectiveAffinities · 22/04/2024 11:24

Ten portions? Utter twaddle OP. If I was offered a meal and I was served one chicken wing as a portion there’d be hell to pay. Especially if someone else had a thigh, a leg or white meat.

That is all there is to say.

Tourmalines · 22/04/2024 11:25

As a child growing up one chicken served our family of 6 . As a roast dinner . Depends on the size of the chicken , but I believe portion sizes have changed compared to then .

The discussion on Mumsnet always seems to be about chickens - out of interest, what size steak would people usually eat? I would always cook an 8oz/225g steak per person.

I worked at a local / artisanal Swiss butcher when I went to uni (which was admittedly a few years ago) and we would calculate 150g of boneless meat per person for meal prep kits, catering etc. (edit: Which was considered generous due to local recommendations being 125g - 150g, IIRC)

The exception was catering for all male groups when we usually calculated about 225-250g.
That may sound sexist and I was initially a bit Hmm as well. But (many) all-male groups somehow tend to become very meat-y / meat fest-y.

My SO recently organised a BBQ (stag do) and used the 250g rule and it still worked perfectly well.
Whereas we had lot of left-overs when we had 250g per person for a regular / "mixed sex" dinner party... (which I did not complain about 😋)

Our local steakhouse´s portions start at 150g as well (except for the Rib Eye, where the smallest portion is 300g...)

1 chicken pp ideally 🤤

Falling that a chicken can feed loads of people if there's enough of everything else, even 10 people but by that point you need mountains of everything else

I am waiting for someone to tell you that you should eat no more than 70g of red meat in a meal so your 225gsteak should feed 4 people 🤣
And pleanty for a stew and sandwiches next day.

We had a 1.8kg chicken last night. Four adults and a 14yo had generous portions of meat alongside potatoes, peas and carrots. I stripped the chicken after and have enough for a chicken pasta bake for the same people tonight. I use 2oz per person when in a pasta/rice dish and lots of vegetables, cheese etc. All are satisfied. Chicken breasts in the supermarket are always weighed and cut up accordingly. I would use 4/5oz for a chicken burger or similar where it's a single lump of meat with other things.

Oh my sound delicious 😂

Yep... 😂My not so dear aunt (NDA) is a bit of a passive agressive bitch.

Which is why NDA was fairly intentionally when allocating the meat. And choosing the poor sod that was stuck with the tail.

FangsForTheMemory · 22/04/2024 11:44

I live on my own and am not a big fan of chicken. If I buy a whole one, I’m eating it for a week.

Growlybear83 · 22/04/2024 11:44

😆😆 I was wondering that too!

CranfordScones · 22/04/2024 11:44

It's mumsnet, so you just add a few of loaves and it's enough to feed five thousand. The important thing is whether they're organic, free range birds that lived a happy life of mindfulness and daily yoga exercises.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 22/04/2024 11:59

We chop a chicken in half lengthways and have half each. So one chicken feeds 2 people.

Thepartnersdesk · 22/04/2024 12:02

It depends on the type of meal. If it's being served up as a roast chicken dinner then the chicken is somewhat the star and so you need a decent amount.

I cooked a reduced one at the weekend which fell off the bone beautifully avoiding any waste.

I did enchiladas, a Chinese style chicken curry and there's a big chicken and ham pie waiting for us tonight. That did two adults and two children three meals.

But it's stuff packed out with other ingredients. The chicken adds nice texture and flavour but as part of something else.

I wouldn't expect it to stretch that far as sliced chicken in a dinner.

Mactoba · 22/04/2024 12:02

A 1.8 kg chicken serves 3 adults and two young children here. I can make it stretch to four adults but it means dp and ds have to have less than they’d like (I don’t really like chicken so am quite happy with only a small portion). Sometimes there are enough carcass pickings to make a sandwich or for the meat lovers to add to fried rice/stirfry/veg curry etc but not always

Now we're talking

Shopper727 · 22/04/2024 12:04

I have 4 boys on adult portions and a large chicken does not feed us all, a leg doesn’t feed one adult without the thigh. I usually have the wings as I like them and they small

We did this yesterday with a small chicken, but a large will do 1 roast dinner, a chicken salad or risotto the next day and possibly a bit left for a sandwich (2 adults)
I'd say 4 max for a large chicken.

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 22/04/2024 12:06

As a main protein, a medium would do 4-5 very comfortably, and a large would easily feed 6-7. 10 is too much of a stretch (as others say, one wing for an adult and nothing more?!).

purplecorkheart · 22/04/2024 12:06

Normally a large chicken will feed three adults in our house (admittedly one is not a big eater) and then enough to make pasta bake etc the next day. We have however started buying two smaller crowns as they are very good value in our local butcher and we are not a huge fan of leg meat. With those we would have enough leftovers for maybe two sandwiches the next day.

WhateverHappenedToMe · 22/04/2024 12:06

The last chicken I bought fed our Burmese python. It was cheaper than a rabbit but not for regular feeding.

BirtyDird · 22/04/2024 12:09

Can you imagine being served a roast dinner and being served 1 chicken wing 😆

No way can a chicken feed 10 adults

Misthios · 22/04/2024 12:23

One extra large chicken does us once - family of 5, including 2 teenage boys.

mitogoshi · 22/04/2024 12:50

Chickens come in different sizes! The cook in the bag one (for those of us who dislike cleaning ovens) feeds 4. The larger ones 6 standard adult portions.
