Help DH won't wear speedos but going to France!

Taking DCs to Disney land Paris in May. DH has severe body dysmorphia and getting clothes that he will wear is a nightmare as he genuinely hates the way he looks (there's absolutely nothing wrong with the way he looks but it's not as easy as just telling him that!)

So I've recently found out about the law in France about all men and boys having to wear speedos when swimming. We aren't staying at Disney we are staying at the centre parks so we definitely plan on going swimming. He's point blank refusing to wear them which I do completely understand as he will worry about it every hour until we go. However if he doesn't go then non of us can go in as Dc are small and can't swim without help and I can't help both on my own. Is there a speedo alternative that's a bit more body forgiving that I could suggest to him?

Put them underneath his normal shorts if anyone tells him off show speeds. They French think we are all crazy anyway.

But....the problem IS the normal shorts.

Problemzapper · 22/04/2024 14:54

A few years ago we booked to go to Italy and my husband was equally mortified to discover he would have to wear Speedos (bad enough that we all had to wear head coverings in the water too), however he discovered speedos which were same length as boxer shorts, although tight fitting (I suppose to avoid any escaped personal parts) he felt much more comfortable with these covering his modesty. Just do a little on-line research and you will find some like these - NOT the dreaded 'budgy smugglers' you are all imagining, phew! Btw, we all got cheap little napkin/pirate type head scarfs to wear in water whilst there, and we looked quite good in them, i thought - funny how our perceptions can be a lot worse than the actual reality, enjoy your holiday!!

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/04/2024 15:00

We’ve also fallen foul of this rule in campsites in france. After the first time where they lent DS1 a pair of smugglers we always made sure we had some with us, just in case. The rule wasn’t always enforced.

StarlightLady · 22/04/2024 15:02

If people read the thread, they will see this issue has been resolved for the OP’s family. Although this is indeed a policy in France, as are swim hats for men and woman in many French pools, it does not apply where they are staying.

Antibetty · 22/04/2024 15:41

so long as he isn't wearing board shorts nobody will even notice

Floogal · 22/04/2024 16:15

I like men wearing budgy smuggler Speedos. I must admit, I like to watch them on the sly when swimming or on the beach.

Same as briefs underpants; so much sexier than boxers. Luckily DH wears colorful breifs

What a ridiculous rule in any case. What do they think happens in pools in every other country 🤣
do they not know babies pee in pools?

Baby pee is not as rank as grown men in dirty shorts . The implication being that they might also be peeing in the pool if their understanding of basic hygiene is so poor!

Obviously not always fair, as I think we have established in the case of the OP's husband, he should be allowed to wear whatever he wants.

Why are we assuming swimming shorts are dirty? 🤔 they are no different to speedos. They’re all made of fabric.

The logic is that you might have been wearing your board shorts around town for the last week or been to the gym wearing them, whereas no one wears Speedos for anything other than swimming.

The French enforce this rule as us Brits are a bit grim and will often walk around all day in shorts getting them dirty and covered in car fumes ave then jump right in the pool in them. It's to keep the water clean and it mates total sense to me to have specific swim wear .

We went to France last year and they allowed shorts in the pool IF they knew you had gotten changed there in the complex but there was a zero tolerance policy to them in the water slide areas. We went to a pirate themed hotel near Disney land last month and they were strict about Lycra swim wear too even though the pool wasn't policed by a life guard.

Out of interest why did it change for the slide area?

Probably more chance of them getting caught in something or coming off altogether on the way down the slide.

What about if you changed into the shorts just before you get in the pool though? 🤔
Or, a guy could have worn Speedos under trousers done his shopping then gone swimming.

Also someone on this thread said their child wasn’t allowed a sunsuit. Which you’d never put them in to wear all day as it would be too hot. So that can’t be about hygiene.

Only on a French slide :)

Well no, not on a French slide, because they're not allowed!

Happened to my brother once on an English slide though!

StarlightLady · 22/04/2024 17:20

I lost my bikini bottoms on a slide once 😳

My bikini top once came off in the Center parcs rapids - maybe those will be banned next 🤣🤣

Auburngal · 22/04/2024 17:22

Also they don’t allow people entering the pool wearing a t shirt over swimwear. This was early 90s at a camp with Eurocamp tents, caravans, another company’s tents and independent tent pitches.

MotherofPearl · 22/04/2024 17:29

This reminds me of a holiday in France a couple of years ago. DH forgot the rule and had only brought normal swimming trunks. We had to make a dash to the local supermarket for a pair of speedos. Speedos are so intrinsically ridiculous and such an out of character thing for my DH to wear that I was literally crying with laughter as we rifled through the speedos rails looking for the least offensive colour!

Someone above lost their bottoms too.. 😳

but then what will they do about this rule apparently preventing hairs getting in 🤢🤷🏼‍♀️

Glittertwins · 22/04/2024 17:32

Waffleson · 21/04/2024 20:54

Would he wear jammers, which are like cycling shorts? Still tight but cover more.

Either these type as above or you can get the shorter ones which aren't as revealing as the traditional swimming trunks and both are perfectly acceptable in French pools.

I'm just envious you can wear a bikini. I am full on tankini plus shorts girl and hate hate hate that as it is.

And that’s exactly why I hope people can wear what they want swimming so we can all feel comfortable (within reason!)

StarlightLady · 22/04/2024 18:03

@SpringLobelia - l don’t care what others think. I’m 40 something and on beaches in mainland Europe I still go without the top. As did my late mother.

I’m UK born but brought up in France and it just felt normal.
