Deliveroo etiquette?

What's the correct thing here please?

Do you hand over your code to the driver before you get the food? Or after?

We've had two issues with food being stolen by a driver. So we don't give code until we physically hold the bag.

But we just had a driver who wouldn't hand over food without code.

Which one is correct please? I don't want to be rude and do it wrong.

I don't use deliveroo anymore as I prefer Uber eats but from what I remember they won't give the food till you give them the code

PurpleJustice · 13/04/2024 19:00

My understanding is that you give them the code so they know they're delivering to the correct address.

What are you achieving by withholding the code?

goldenretrievermum5 · 13/04/2024 19:02

Withholding the code until you’re physically holding the food is ridiculous and very over the top in my opinion, you’re just making life needlessly hard for everyone. What do you think they’re going to do? Run off from your doorstep clutching your pizza?

Getting her food. She says she’s had food stolen

BettyShagter · 13/04/2024 19:04

I'm trying to visualise how they stole your food?

You told them the code and they ran away with it?

Hillarious · 13/04/2024 19:04

We order direct from our local restaurant. No issues there.

SulkySeagull · 13/04/2024 19:06

Eh? They give YOU the code so only the person with the code can take the food. What difference would the code make if they were going to steal your food?

mynameiscalypso · 13/04/2024 19:07

I normally give the code before. I thought that was usual. I've never given my code and had the driver run away with my food though if that's what's happened to you twice!

Exactly! My head hurts, trying to work out what the OP is going on about 🤣🤣

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 13/04/2024 19:10

Is it that you give the code, they hand over the food and half of it is missing??

malmi · 13/04/2024 19:10

If you give them the code they can mark the food as successfully delivered so if they somehow then leave without actually handing it over it doesn't look like anything went amiss. They can claim they handed it to you.

If they didn't have the code they couldn't mark it successfully delivered. More suspicious.

So the driver knocks at the door, asks for the code, turns around and runs off clutching the takeaway bags to their chest?

No. I got a delivery last night. He asked for the code before he gave me the food.

Sparrow7 · 13/04/2024 19:17

We also stopped using deliveroo after our food was stolen by a driver. I had no idea it was so common!

FlowersInAFlowerBed · 13/04/2024 19:21

Just use Uber eats or just eat then you won't need to give a code 🤷‍♀️

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/04/2024 19:22

I'm confused!

I have never used Deliveroo and probably never will after reading this thread!
Just Eat seems so much easier...

SirenSays · 13/04/2024 19:23

I always give the code first, did they literally turn and run away with your food?

SnarkMode · 13/04/2024 19:24

They need to enter the code on their side to mark the food as delivered. If they don't do this they won't receive payment.

Same 🤣

I really don't see a driver going to such lengths just to steal OP's kebab.

I have this mental image of the deliverer dashing off down the path - chips flying everywhere whilst they desperately try to mount their pushbike without spilling the milkshake contraband.

newnamechange98 · 13/04/2024 19:27

Of all the things to steal that's ridiculous. I can't believe people are asking for the code and then legging it whilst probably appearing on hundreds of ring doorbells all for the sake of a free meal.

Doyoumind · 13/04/2024 19:30

I don't order often, but my code is always the same. Is everyone else's? That means they could, in theory, make a note of the code and steal it next time, if stealing food is such a big thing.

You do sometimes need to give a code with Uber Eats. It's always the last four digits of your telephone number though so not exactly hard to figure out 🤣 The Deliveroo one is the same every time too so an eager food thief could easily stake your steak out for a few weeks.

Never had to here and I order often.

Last night Uber eats gave us a code.
