Deliveroo etiquette?

What's the correct thing here please?

Do you hand over your code to the driver before you get the food? Or after?

We've had two issues with food being stolen by a driver. So we don't give code until we physically hold the bag.

But we just had a driver who wouldn't hand over food without code.

Which one is correct please? I don't want to be rude and do it wrong.

Are you saying you opened the door for the Deliveroo driver, gave the code and they then turned away without handing the food over and ran away with it in their hands? The chance of that ever happening again must be infinitely small!

Honestly I’ve never really thought about whether the code should be given before or after handing the food over, I sometimes give the code before the driver asks and sometimes only remember when asked but never thought about whether I’m giving it before or after getting the food as either way it’s a 5 second transaction. I actually couldn’t say which way round it usually happens!

meganorks · 13/04/2024 19:35

You have to give the code to get the food handed over. I can believe you had food stolen. But I can't believe they came to your door, asked for the code and then ran off with your food! Which is the only way it would be an issue giving the code first

FusilliNom · 13/04/2024 19:35

You're meant to give them the code first. But are you saying twice you've done this and then the driver has legged it?

I'd suggest you use a different delivery company as you'll only get the same ones popping up on deliveroo

FusilliNom · 13/04/2024 19:36

Mind you I don't know if anyone has realised but the code is the same each time. So they can just write yours down and nick it if they really wanted to

Last night Uber eats gave us a code.

Then just eat it's not hard?!

SulkySeagull · 13/04/2024 19:45

@Nonewclothes2024 yes I understand. Deliveroo give you the code. That’s why I can’t understand what difference it makes to the driver stealing it.

I always give the code first, did they literally turn and run away with your food?

Yes. They claimed we had it. We didn't. Luckily we had a refund.

Code first!

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 13/04/2024 19:54

I've always been handed my bag of food and then asked for the code.

EveryoneJapan · 13/04/2024 19:57

The driver hands me the food, he asks for the code, I tell him, brief pleasantries (optional), say goodbye, close door.

No you give deliveroo the code

PoppyCherryDog · 13/04/2024 21:14

I order deliveroo a lot! Currently on maternity leave so having far too many deliveroo deliveries!

Ive never ever thought about what order this happens. I think normally they hand it over to me then they get their phone out and ask for the code to input into their phone.

As an aside… do those who are regular deliveroo-ers like me… is your confirmation code always the same? Ours is always 27 no matter what we order.

FlowersInAFlowerBed · 13/04/2024 19:21

Just use Uber eats or just eat then you won't need to give a code 🤷‍♀️

I used Uber eats for first time last week and had to give a code. Weirdly the last 4 digits of my mobile number.

yeahandno · 13/04/2024 21:20

Always the same code with Deliveroo.

Think it was introduced because people accepted food that wasn't theirs (in flats or if driver made a mistake). So the code means it goes to the right person. Probably what happened to you OP - and now you're creating a problem about the resolve!

Just give the code and the driver hands it over or sometimes they hand it over and then ask for the code. It's really not a big deal 🙄

Bellsandthistle · 13/04/2024 21:23

Doyoumind · 13/04/2024 19:30

I don't order often, but my code is always the same. Is everyone else's? That means they could, in theory, make a note of the code and steal it next time, if stealing food is such a big thing.

Yes, our code is always the same. So the driver could, in theory, write the code down in some secret code notebook, and then on the off chance they deliver to you again, just use the code and then make off with your food.
What an elaborate ruse for a bit of random food they probably wouldn’t want and couldn’t sell on to anyone else. 😂

Yes. They claimed we had it. We didn't. Luckily we had a refund.

There is absolutely no way that a driver went to the effort of meeting you at the door yet then sprinted off with your food.

Today’s thing that didn’t happen award goes to you, OP 🏆
