If I had a house it would always be tidy?

Colleague asked what I was doing at the weekend and I just gave the generic answer of meeting a friend for coffee and I really need to clean the house.

(For reference I mean hoover, put clean washing away, clean the bathroom, my house isn’t a state but I’ve been a bit lazy this week).

She responded with “if I had a house it would always be clean”

Shes late 20s and still lives in her bedroom, which is fine as the housing situation is shit but if you’ve never had to run a house on your own then you have no idea what it takes.

She might be right, so what ? My house is always clean, other bits of my life are a complete mess 🤣

fieldsofbutterflies · 12/04/2024 19:42

Maybe she's right? Lots of people have tidy houses all the time.

flutterby1 · 12/04/2024 19:42

She's naive and delulu... the optimism of youth

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/04/2024 19:43

I think she may underestimate the desire for anyone else who might share the house with her to live in utter squalor.

Left to myself, my house was tidy. However, kids, pets and partners had other ideas -chiefly to never pick up so much as a piece of paper and to let me frazzle myself in my desire for order.

It isn't always down to 'you' how you live.

BibbleandSqwauk · 12/04/2024 19:44

@flutterby1 delulu?

My house would be immaculate if I lived alone. Two lazy arse teens and several pets have other ideas sadly. I can cope with my own generated mess but not three people's when only I do any meaningful cleaning or tidying.

Tidy and clean is different. Even if you put everything away as you use it, floors still need hoovering or mopping, toilets cleaning, washing doing, dusting, surfaces wiping... not to mention minor DIY like a screw tightening, gardening, grocery shopping etc.

Greywitch2 · 12/04/2024 19:47

You are nicer than me. I'd have responded, 'Aw. Cos your Mum will come round and clean it?'

Maybe she'll think before she makes judgemental comments next time.

PeaceOnThePorch · 12/04/2024 19:48

Why has this bothered you? Maybe her house will always be clean.

I knew my house would always be clean and tidy having lived with parents who had lots of clutter and mess around which drove me mad. I don’t find it hard to keep my house clean and tidy, even with kids and animals, not everyone finds it difficult.

AgnesX · 12/04/2024 19:48

😁 Ah bless.... she's in for a bit of a shock at some point.

Houses/homes are pits of effort and money.

All the time. Do they? 😳

Well, nobody knows for certain - but that doesn't mean she wouldn't manage it.

DH and I chose not to have DC and while we do have multiple pets, our home is always clean and tidy. I lived in a shit tip as a teenager though Grin

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 12/04/2024 19:50

I have always had a tidy house, when the kids were little it was tidy, now they are older its still, very clean and tidy.

I now have a cleaner but if I did not I would still have a spotless house.

Some people are just tidy and other not so tidy.

arlequin · 12/04/2024 19:50

Tbf some people do, my parents do. The most immaculate tidy house. Ours is v "lived in"...

Ha ha.
Me too.
I've never heard this - I'm going to borrow it.
Brilliant.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 12/04/2024 19:51

She might be right- I know if Dh is home, my house isn’t always clean. She might get a neat freak partner, have zero pets or children or simply be someone who perpetually cleans and tidies 🤷‍♀️.

also she might be wrong and hate cleaning etc when it actually becomes a reality.

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 12/04/2024 19:51

AgnesX · 12/04/2024 19:49

Of course they do, some people cant stand dirt and untidiness.

Perfect28 · 12/04/2024 19:52

Surely if people have tidy houses all the time then they spend lots of time tidying the house?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/04/2024 19:52

Ah, she just wishes she had her own house. I remember thinking "If only I had a house/car, I would look after it so well. It would be shining like a new pin, and I would never take it for granted."

Now my house is shabby and my car has had bird poop on the driver's door for weeks, needless to say.

PotatoPudding · 12/04/2024 19:53

Before I had DS, my house was always clean.

BoobyDazzler · 12/04/2024 19:53

I can’t imagine anything duller than spending a weekend cleaning a house so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Haven't you got a life anything better to do?
