If I had a house it would always be tidy?

Colleague asked what I was doing at the weekend and I just gave the generic answer of meeting a friend for coffee and I really need to clean the house.

(For reference I mean hoover, put clean washing away, clean the bathroom, my house isn’t a state but I’ve been a bit lazy this week).

She responded with “if I had a house it would always be clean”

Shes late 20s and still lives in her bedroom, which is fine as the housing situation is shit but if you’ve never had to run a house on your own then you have no idea what it takes.

Surely if people have tidy houses all the time then they spend lots of time tidying the house?

Or they're just naturally tidy and don't make a mess?

Mine is always tidy because I always put my stuff away after use and I don't have messy DC who spread their chaos everywhere Grin

EG94 · 12/04/2024 19:55

But if a judgey comment which I’d have for sure bit back with a sarcastic remark. That said I knew before having a house it would always be tidy and yes all my houses have been tidy. I actually hate mess and untidiness to the point where if I’m 30 mins late to bed cleaning it, I’d rather do that. Just puts me at ease and peace. Ironically when my mate comes I’ll say excuse the mess (cup of tea I made maybe) and she’ll go what fucking mess mate 😂😂

BreakfastAtMimis · 12/04/2024 19:55

Hahahahaha. Ha. She'll learn...

Hollyrose04048 · 12/04/2024 19:57

My house is always clean and tidy. Maybe she will. Not for you to say .

TroysMammy · 12/04/2024 19:58

My house is always clean and tidy, however it's a 1/12th dolls house. My full sized house not so much.

Of course they do.

Do they actually live in it without making any effort to keep it tidy and clean, is what I was getting at.

Or do they have a magic wand

If you're naturally tidy then it doesn't take much effort.

I probably spend 30 minutes a day on housework.

I do not make an effort to keep my house tidy, there is a place for everything and everyone knows where things go, when a house is clean and tidy, it does not take long to clean it.

Churchview · 12/04/2024 20:02

She's no idea has she. I expect that if she had a unicorn it would always be pink and glittery too.

DanglingMod · 12/04/2024 20:02

It's possible to have a tidy house all the time with more or less no effort. You just don't get stuff out in the first place or put it away straight away.

Clean is a different matter that doesn't just happen by itself. It takes actual time rather than just habit.

Crystallizedring · 12/04/2024 20:03

When DH and I both worked fulltime and the kids were in after school club our house was really clean and tidy, mainly because we were never in it.
Changing jobs and childcare means the house is usually a bit of a mess but mess isn't the same as dirty.

My house is always tidy - I tidy as I go and DC do the same. It’s not always spotlessly clean but always tidy 😄

Medschoolmum · 12/04/2024 20:04

AgnesX · 12/04/2024 19:49

All the time. Do they? 😳

I know lots of people who always have tidy houses. I think it's relatively easy if you choose to prioritise it.

I'm not that fussed about tidiness personally, so I don't usually put it at the top of my list. I think it's perfectly doable if you're committed to it though.

Maybe she's right? Lots of people have tidy houses all the time.

Do they? I feel like they are mythical creatures.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/04/2024 19:40

She might be right, so what ? My house is always clean, other bits of my life are a complete mess 🤣

How is it always clean? Do you never make it dirty?

But if you need to tidy it that means it's not always tidy. You tidy it because it is untidy.

Catowl · 12/04/2024 20:08

Well it's easy to keep a house clean and tidy if you live alone.
If you have a man and children in that house. Not so easy!
I had a tidy clean bedroom in my 20"s but in my 40's I am in a constant battle to keep my house clean and tidy because my DH and children are constantly messing it up.

Tatas · 12/04/2024 20:08

My house is always clean and tidy 😂 I've always known it would be, it's just my nature.

I read her comment as a sort of wistful 'when I get to have my own place' rather than anything negative towards you.

If I don't really exist, does that mean I don't have to pay bills anymore? Grin

I can’t imagine anything duller than spending a weekend cleaning a house so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Haven't you got a life anything better to do?

Takes me just over 2 hours.
Time well spent
Then I can party in comfort 🤣🤣

Shiningout · 12/04/2024 20:10

It's the same as people without kids snottily stating they will never let their little darlings tantrum in public or watch screens. Very easy to say when you have no experience of it. I'd have just laughed 😂

Well, everything needs to be put away after use, but I don't really consider that tidying? It's just what you do?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/04/2024 19:52

Ah, she just wishes she had her own house. I remember thinking "If only I had a house/car, I would look after it so well. It would be shining like a new pin, and I would never take it for granted."

Now my house is shabby and my car has had bird poop on the driver's door for weeks, needless to say.

That show I read it too. I live in a flat that is super cluttered and not remotely clean. I definitely kid myself that why I move to a house it'll be spotless and everything will have a place 🤣 If my space was just a bedroom I'd be feeling that even more.

CupOfTeaNoSugar · 12/04/2024 20:13

I would of just answered “nice one”

Lets see if her reply still rings true if or when she has kids 🤣

This. Some people value tidiness more than others and each to their own but you can’t be handing out judgement about someone else’s ability to do something you have never had to do…
