I politely disagree with Joe. I have a very health conscious friend who cooks from scratch, plenty of vegetables and a Mediterranean diet as recommended by all healthcare professionals and has two children. One has ADHD and one doesn’t.

Has Joe jumped the shark on this one?

Joe Wicks blames ultra-processed junk for explosion of kids with ADHD

The nation's favourite work-out guru, nicknamed the Body Coach warned 'every child' now appears to have an ADHD diagnosis.

he is a dip stick

Craftier · 12/04/2024 09:28

Joe wicks is a fucking gobshite who needs to fuck off.

What qualifications has he got to comment on this?

Kijuity · 12/04/2024 09:28

Never heard the expression jump the shark 🦈 that's a new one on me. Yes of course he's being ridiculous but there is some sense in what he's saying - it's obviously way more healthy in general to cook from scratch and too much sugar and crap can effect mental health as your body is constantly either hyper or low based on excess sugar etc. But overall no eating shit doesn't cause ADHD.

RandomMess · 12/04/2024 09:29

😂

Heaven forbid the medical profession may know better than him!

Lentilweaver · 12/04/2024 09:29

It will be a cold day in hell before I take health advice from influencers. I know plenty of people with super healthy diets and ADHD.

Revelatio · 12/04/2024 09:29

Wow, I didn’t realise he was a research scientist too! What a talented guy.

Newname71 · 12/04/2024 09:30

Joe Wicks is a prick and needs to keep his mouth shut!!!!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 12/04/2024 09:32

Oh dear

Elephantswillnever · 12/04/2024 09:32

I’m with you tbh I don’t think it causes ADHD. That said I do think that it can exacerbate the symptoms. Which isn’t quite the same thing as causation but isn’t great either. We should all be avoiding processed junk if we can.

Runningbird43 · 12/04/2024 09:33

I thought this was debunked in the 80’s.

cba to read it, is this based on peer reviewed research or just something he pulled out his arse?

o/p hate to point out your study of two siblings hardly counts as an epidemiological study either, so doesn’t disprove Joe’s claims 😂

BurntOutNurseryNurse · 12/04/2024 09:33

I politely disagree with Joe

I impolitely, rudely and fucking disrespectfully disagree with Joe and would like to tell him that he is an absolute tosser to suggest such shite.

LisaD1 · 12/04/2024 09:33

I can’t even be bothered to read it as I already know anything out of that twats mouth will be bullshit.

Iamacatslave · 12/04/2024 09:33

When did Joe Wicks become Dr Joe Wicks?

Unabletomitigate · 12/04/2024 09:34

I think he might be on to something.

If anyone is interested check out Georgia Ede and Chris Palmer.

If you believe that drugs (chemical compounds that we ingest) can affect the brain, then surely the food we eat (chemical compounds we ingest) can affect the brain. Not every drug effects everyone the same, not every food effects everyone the same.

Tedious

LittleMy77 · 12/04/2024 09:34

It’s bullshit. The ‘explosion’ is because there is now much better criteria for diagnosis, especially for girls and women.

His stupid reasoning doesn’t track for those of us who are adults and have recently been diagnosed

I hate articles like this; it gives airtime to bullshit theories that then make it even harder for diagnosis to be taken seriously

rainraingoaway6 · 12/04/2024 09:35

I have ADHD and my mum brought me up on homemade dinners cooked from scratch naturally gluten free and no processed food or sugar.
Still very much got ADHD.

randomchap · 12/04/2024 09:35

Daily Mail clickbait shite

Joe Wicks is just trying to stay in the limelight.

Ignore both of them

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/04/2024 09:35

How sad that he gets airtime.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 12/04/2024 09:35

He's stupid to draw a causal link. but he's right to say that junk food/UPFs are affecting everyone's mental and physical health. No one can deny that.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/04/2024 09:36

He's not the brightest. If I am being charitable I think he may be confusing the (good) research that shows a poor diet, especially one heavy in sugar, can impede concentration and ability to learn. However that is obviously not the same as ADHD.

Packingcubesqueen · 12/04/2024 09:36

I think that diet may play a part. Obviously ADHD isn’t caused by UPF and a healthy diet won’t prevent it but it could contribute to why many kids with ADHD are struggling. People with ADHD who cope well don’t typically get diagnosed. Some additives in drinks and sweets are well known to cause attention difficulties. They warn you on the packets. It’s not a leap to suggest there are probably other dietary effects we don’t fully understand.

Rainyspringflowers · 12/04/2024 09:37

If you go back twenty or thirty years ADHD was largely ‘naughty boy syndrome’ and ADHD or not a generally chaotic background didn’t help.

We’ve all obviously moved on as a society now and it isn’t a syndrome that causes ‘naughtiness’ and it isn’t just boys.

hamstersarse · 12/04/2024 09:37

I don't think there is a question that you "are what you eat"

Tonnes of processed sugary foods and crap are shown in studies to contribute to higher rates of ADHD

I think it would be basic common sense that if you have a child with ADHD that you feed them non-processed whole foods

Backhometothenorth · 12/04/2024 09:38

My daughters symptoms are immediately a thousand times worse if she eats additives such as artificial sweeteners, colourings such as e150 and e120, preservatives such as potassium sorbate, flavourings such as vanillin (cheap vanilla extract in Nutella etc), MSG and several more. Check those labels religiously - it doesn't cause ADHD but UPF definitely triggers dangerously out of control behaviour in my experience.
