So I get a message from DS1(16)at work today to tell me there’s a skip in our front garden. They’ve shoe horned it into the tiny front garden of our terraced house. In the process they’ve hit the wall knocking off 3 header stones, damaged the wall and even worse the brick gate post is now wobbling! It’s nearly 5 foot high and moving right at the bottom. What’s worse is I didn’t even order a fucking skip!
I’ve phoned them and pretty much all
they said was we’ll come and collect it tomorrow!
I’ve emailed them with photos and video of all the damage.
I’m raging!

I’d be fuming too.

The skip company should be insured.
You need a quote for repairs.
If you’ve got legal cover on your home insurance I’d get them to deal with it.

2chocolateoranges · 11/04/2024 20:11

No point being fuming about it, you can’t change what’s happened, they will fix it.

Dh’s work colleague backed a lorry into someone’s brick wall and his company paid for it to get fixed.

Yeah I know, I just can’t quite believe it. Not only have they delivered the skip to the wrong address but they’ve done a load of damage and then just done one. I’m sure I’ll calm down eventually 🙃

I think this is one of those moments the OP is excused for being fuming 😤
If she HAD ordered the skip , ok , shit happens but the fact she didn't, I get her anger.

Ilovecashews · 11/04/2024 20:31

Omg so a skip just showed up at your place and did all that damage? Anger away!

What a bullshit reply, op has every right to be fuming. And there is nothing at all in the op or in the reply the op got when she called to indicate they would fix it, let alone fix it with no inconvenience to op.

Nice pointless story about your dh's work colleage though

IntermittentFarting · 11/04/2024 20:33

You are very much NOT BU.
I'd be so apoplectic with fury I'd be kept awake at night by this!

Tbird5 · 11/04/2024 20:36

Take pictures of the skip there, preferably with the company's name on it. Take as much evidence as possible.
Similar thing happened to a friend of mine and the company tried to say it wasn't them that caused the damage.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/04/2024 20:38

Take photos of EVERYTHING.

The skip, the damage, your door number, the road, video them when they collect it.

I have no other advice.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 11/04/2024 20:38

I’d get him to take plenty of photos, especially of it being empty. No doubt some CF will dump a load of crap in it during the night and they’ll try to charge you for taking it!

Agreed!

I refuse to believe anyone would be anything other than rationally fuming if they found themselves in this situation!

BMW6 · 11/04/2024 20:40

Photo and film the damage (demonstrate wobbliness), photo truck picking up skip tomorrow, get quotes for wall demolition and replacement.

And/or contact your home insurance and let them handle it with your evidence above.

FairFuming · 11/04/2024 20:42

Make sure you have evidence of everything and photos of the skip and the companies name on it. Call round local builders/landscapers tomorrow for quotes and then send them to the company.

I'd be furious too

This is my concern, that they’ll deny doing it 😪. Did your friend get it sorted?

I mean, it seems like they probably dodged a bullet here!

KidsandKindness · 11/04/2024 22:55

Is it a well known company where you are OP? Do they have a big professional website, or are they a little tin pot company. If the former, I doubt you'll need to worry too much, as they won't want their reputation damaged. The latter, may result in you having to take it to small claims court, but if that's the case, I'd get my money, and then advertise their carelessness on every website you can think of, and also make people aware that you've had to fight to get the damage repaired. As other's have said, be sure and get video footage and a photo of who ever picks it up, as insurers may well want this evidence.

ToxicChristmas · 11/04/2024 23:02

Do any of your neighbours have CCTV that may have covered the delivery?
Try not to worry too much. Like advised here, photograph and video the whole skip and all the damage. Check for marks on the skip where it may have hit the walls.

Er, I don’t know if this was meant to be supportive? Or maybe help the OP feel less helpless? But no, there is no guarantee they will “fix it.” The fact they delivered a skip to someone who never ordered it and damaged their property in several ways in the process indicates that they could easily be cowboy builders who will do everything they can not to fix it.

And even if it IS some large, well-known company that OP can trust to be insured and fix any damage, she’ll still have the onus of proving they caused the damage.

Plus… does anyone really need one more fucking piece of life admin? @Mumof2NDers sounds like a working mum with multiple children so to suddenly be landed with one more piece for her mental load that shouldn’t have had anything to do with her is really shite.

I’d be fuming, too. I might calm down, but I’d be a bit bitter that I had to spend God knows how long sorting out a mess made by some careless asshats.

Topseyt123 · 12/04/2024 00:44

Take photos of everything as already suggested.

Also, do you have a Ring doorbell, or any other brand of video doorbell? Do any of your neighbours? If so then there may be footage of the actual arrival of the skip and of the damage happening. Save that if possible and it can be evidence of the destruction.

Answersunknown · 12/04/2024 00:47

Videos, email chain of your contact and a post on their Facebook of how they plan to rectify it…..

Codlingmoths · 12/04/2024 00:51

Pictures, a video, everything. And I’d contact them daily on progress on fixing your garden.

FeckOffNowLads · 12/04/2024 01:03

Normally when an OP is “fuming”….. they end up getting zero sympathy from me as it’s over dramatic bollocks. Fuming is a red flag for me in my mumsnet internal landscape.

however…

this is the first time EVER that I’ve just thought - fume on!!!

Thankyou! ^ All of this. I work full time and have 2 ND sons and it’s been an absolute slog bringing them up. Added to this I suspect my DH is ND too he’s lovely but pretty useless so I’m left dealing with everything…. Kid issues, financial issues etc. I already feel like my head will implode most days while DH just meanders his way through life, telling me not to worry they’ll sort it!! What if they won’t, what if they deny it? It’s just extra shite I shouldn’t have to deal with.
And I haven’t calmed down at all yet, add to that that I’ve hardly slept and have dreamt about following a skip in my car because they came for it in the middle of the night…. I feel murderous this morning!
