I'll tell you mine and my dps frequency after some replies. To be quite frank I'm a bit disgusted!

This is fascinating! Apparently creating ear wax is a genetic thing - some people do & some have dry ears & make far less
I rarely ever have wax & never have big lumps of it. Dh, on the other hand does, and I love removing it for him!
The first time I saw it we were on a flight home from our first holiday together 20 years ago & the bright light from the window illuminated the inside of his ear & there was a MASSIVE piece of wax reasonably far down but honestly I don't know how he could hear anything!

I could barely wait to get home & I very gently removed it & he said his ears (yes, he had it both sides!) Felt empty!!

I have been tending to his ears ever since! Aaahh....marriage...

I use a cotton bud to give the outside bits a clean once a week after a hair wash.

I do the same with dc. I never poke inside any of our ears.

I have had hopi ear candle treatment several times. It is amazing. I have it about twice a year and I can definitely hear better after. If you get it and are squeamish, do not look!

ttcat37 · 03/04/2024 00:05

Every dang day with cotton buds after a wash. Go right in there. If I hit my eardrum I reverse. Never had any ear issues. Won’t be changing my ear cleaning schedule.

EBearhug · 03/04/2024 00:11

Having had my ears sorted about a month ago - not much at all, after ENT suctioned them and gave me a course of antibiotic drops. I have the TV much quieter, and I have been very good at using earplugs in the bath/shower/swimming pool to avoid them getting very wet.

(Thank you, Andrea at AWMH, if you're here.)

EBearhug · 03/04/2024 00:12

Though I scrub behind them daily to avoid a crop of potatoes.

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/04/2024 00:12

I also clean my ear canal with cotton buds. I am 56, have come to no harm from this habit, & I have clean ears.

MustBeGinOclock · 03/04/2024 00:52

Every time i shower have a thing where I must make sure the soap is out though

SnowFrogJelly · 03/04/2024 01:02

You should never use cotton buds in your ears

mathanxiety · 03/04/2024 01:03

Entire ears inside and out daily in the shower and with a Qtip while drying.

SnowFrogJelly · 03/04/2024 01:04

More clean freaks 🙄

mjf981 · 03/04/2024 01:05

I have an ear syringe and love gently flushing them out with warm water. Seeing the wax in the sink is so satisfying.
I only do it about a once a month.

Weird!

@whatonearthisthatabout would have been good if you'd bothered to type if you meant putting stuff in your ear canal (obviously a shit idea) or not.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 03/04/2024 02:02

I scrub behind my ears every time I have a shower. Am I supposed to be doing more than that?

What do previous posters mean when they say some children have visibly dirty ears?

bradpittsbathwater · 03/04/2024 02:04

Never inside! I've had ear infections and wouldn't go poking about in the ear. I wash the outside every day while showering.

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/04/2024 02:06

Never.

Well the outside bit obviously, but never poke into the ear canal.

My mother would not have it about that, was insistent that DSis and I have our ears poked once a week (Sunday nights!) after our hair wash to get the wax out. Until I got impacted wax and ear drum damage and DSis was the same but much much worse. Still has hearing problems to this day, will almost certainly needs aids sometime soon and it goes back to the damage done then.

I've always cleaned my ears with cotton buds since being very little... I remember a kid at school had visible wax coming out of his ear, like orange ears, with a big banana shaped huge piece of wax coming out of one. It has stayed with me forever 😷

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 03/04/2024 02:17

I'm pretty sure my ears just don't produce that much earwax! <pokes to check>

bradpittsbathwater · 03/04/2024 02:20

@Blahblarblehbleh1 poor kid was probably half deaf. Sounds like he needed it removed professionally. Not poking around at home.

whatonearthisthatabout · 03/04/2024 06:38

Wow lots of replies!
So I meant (and because I've never done different or know any different I assumed that people would understand!) a cotton bud in the ear.
I do everyday and always have done, as have my parents. My dp never did until late.
I've been enlightened!

Every time I wash my hair 2-3 x week).
I wear hearing aids so I need to keep them clean. Very satisfying it is too!

Jifmicroliquid · 03/04/2024 06:51

Ive cotton budded my ears since i was a child (my mum obviously did it then) and never had a problem. Ears are clean.
Kids with waxy ears knock me sick tbh.

DustyLee123 · 03/04/2024 06:52

Twice a day, they itch if I don’t.
DH only cleans his if he’s seeing a doctor 🤢

The outside with a flannel when I have a shower. I try not to use cotton buds as I get waxy ears and it compacts it. Have to have my ears syringes every few years
