I had tonsillitis a couple of weeks ago, pharmacist gave antibiotics for 5 days as there was white spots on my tonsils, they seemed to work. I’ve had a really busy week this week so haven’t really had chance to pace myself and since yesterday my throat has been bad again. Im in bed crying, just feel generally rubbish and got ear ache. I think the tonsillitis has come back. I’ve had tonsillitis a few times over the years but it’s never come back like this. Due to go on holiday in a couple of days and don’t know what to do. It’s bank holiday weekend so won’t be able to get doctors appointments, pharmacist won’t be able to prescribe more antibiotics they said before 5 days is the max they can do, and difflam isn’t helping. Please help!

111 or walk in.

Fullofpudding · 30/03/2024 07:08

Can you go to a different pharmacy and ask for antibiotics?

Fullofpudding · 30/03/2024 07:09

Or call 111. Do you have a a walk in centre nearby?

WaltzingWaters · 30/03/2024 07:12

walk in centre.
private doctor consultation

Good luck OP, hope you’re better soon and can enjoy too it holiday.

CarrotCake01 · 30/03/2024 07:12

Ooohhhhh OP, I HATE tonsillitis with a passion! People think it's just a sore throat but it ABSOLUTELY sucks! I really feel for you.

Keep dosed up with pain relief, gargle salt water, get as much rest and sleep as you can and drink as much water as you can.

I hope it clears up soon! 🤞🏻

When the pharmacist says they can’t prescribe more than 5 days antibiotics, they don’t mean ever - they meant if the 5 days worth doesn’t work then you need to see your GP to get a second prescription; it can take up to 10
day of antibiotics to completely clear tonsillitis.

I would either go to a different pharmacy or, if that is the only one in your area that offers the prescribing service, go in and speak to them explaining you have got it again, not still. If they won’t prescribe another course of treatment, you’ll need to go to the local walk in centre or call 111 to get the prescription.

SiouxWarrior · 30/03/2024 07:14

Sorry to hear that. What about private GP appointment through apps such as Babylon. You'll get video call consultation and a private prescription which will be more expensive but might help. Alternatively, make your way to A&E and get seen there. Make sure you also mention the earache whichever route you take. If you are flying earache isn't fun and can be risky. If you do get meds please try and rest as much as possible both before and on your hols. Your body is telling you it needs rest. Good luck!

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 07:15

Thank you, I’m concerned as to why it’s come back so quickly. I don’t really want more antibiotics but also don’t want it to get worse? I’ve tried Livi but their earliest appointment is tomorrow and the pharmacist said before 5 days was the max they could do after that you need to go to the doctors but they won’t be open until Tuesday and I’m meant to be on holiday by then. I’m literally in tears, hardly slept last night.

Call out of hours or 111 and get a prescription.

Meadowfinch · 30/03/2024 07:17

'Keep dosed up with pain relief, gargle salt water, get as much rest and sleep as you can and drink as much water as you can.'

This absolutely.

I suspect it has come back because you are tired and run down. You've stayed on your feet for the last week, but now it's the holiday and you've relaxed, it's resurged. If it's making you cry, your resilience is low. I think you need rest. Sleep. Lack of stress.

I hope you feel better soon.

aleC4 · 30/03/2024 07:19

Call 111 and they should be able to make you an appointment at an urgent treatment centre if you haven't got a walk-in.

ImpishOrAdmirable · 30/03/2024 07:21

Can you go to a private walk in gp? Some should be open.

Also, gargling with hydrogen peroxide is the only thing that relieves my pain a bit, so pl try that from a chemist.

Tonsilitis is hideous. I spent most of a long weekend in Palma in bed because of it. Good luck OP. x

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 07:24

Can 111 prescribe over the phone? I’m not flying it’s a UK holiday. I’m just gutted because got so much should be doing today, at a family Easter thing tomorrow before going away and I don’t know what to do! When I’ve had antibiotics before they have given them over 10 days, I wonder if the 5 days from the pharmacist wasn’t long enough? I don’t want antibiotics again because the first lot didn’t make me feel that great and I know it’s not good to take them often but I don’t know if it will clear up by itself?

OP posts:
GherkinsOnToast · 30/03/2024 07:28

if you phone 111 they will get a doctor to call you, they will make an appointment for sometime today to be seen then prescribe the antibiotics. They may not want to see you given your history. Call now and you should get an earliest call back slot.

5 days is often not enough for tonsillitis - Ive always needed 7-10 days. when they say its not good to take them often - they mean the people who want antibiotics for each and every cold/sneeze/fart not those who actually need them. if it's bacterial tonsillitis then it won't go anywhere without the extra antibiotics.

Upinthenightagain · 30/03/2024 07:30

5 days is not a lot for tonsillitis. I had 7 days worth. Def go to a walk in. I’m sure they’ll give you something

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 07:30

Ive just checked and the white spots are back 😟. I know I sound like such a wimp but I’m in bed crying!

Please call 111 - the sooner you start more antibiotics the more you'll enjoy your holiday.

HonorGold · 30/03/2024 07:37

OP I am sorry. I have been where you are. You need more antibiotics. Call 111 now. If you get antibiotics today it should kick in quickly and you’ll be better for your hols.

i know you feel terrible and also sad and frustrated so your in bed crying but you need to take action. Call 111 now!

beat of luck

maddening · 30/03/2024 07:39

Ooo gp via 111 and gargle with antiseptic mouth wash

BabbleBee · 30/03/2024 07:40

Get yourself some Peroxyl - it’s a mouthwash but you need to gargle with it. It’s absolutely vile, be prepared for that! It fizzes on the white spots and clears them off. It’s not a replacement for antibiotics but will help a lot.

LakieLady · 30/03/2024 07:44

As well as getting more ABs, if you have soluble aspirin in the house, dissolve a couple and gargle with it.

It makes it a lot more comfortable.

It's over 50 years since I had my tonsils out, but I can still remember how awful tonsillitis made me feel. And I'm glad they took them out, too.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 07:47

Thank you everyone, I’ve called 111 and they have requested a doctor call back for sometime today.
I know they don’t like prescribing antibiotics really these days so I’m worried they won’t give another course. And I’m concerned it’s a lot I’m putting into my body- the first course was 2 tablets 4 times a day for 8 days. Looking back maybe I should’ve double checked the doctors that the pharmacist was right and I shouldn’t have spread them out more. I’ve never had tonsilitis that has come back like this. So I’m worried it’s a lot of antibiotics I’m putting in my body.

My DD has tonsillitis currently as well and that dosage is a standard dose, she had exactly the same.
Hers worsened despite antibiotics so she's now got 10 days of the penicillin plus another antibiotic and steroids on top. Tonsillitis can develop into quinsy which needs hospital treatment so I wouldn't mess about with it - take as many antibiotics as you need.

Finchgold · 30/03/2024 07:56

I’ve had that happen before. Gp took a throat swab and turned out my tonsillitis was penicillin resistant so needed different antibiotics.

They’ll give you something and you’ll feel better soon, don’t stress.

I now gargle strong mouthwash every morning and that helps keep infections at bay.

Spectre8 · 30/03/2024 07:57

I got reoccurring tonsilitus, I'd you can't get antibiotics then salt water gargles and trying eating pienapple there is a chemical in it that really helps your throat
